When I start my 03' XB9S it sounds like the fuel pump is priming constantly. I don't remember it sounding like that before. I don't know if its just because I didn't have my helmet on when I started it or what. Any ideas here? J | ||

When you turn the kill switch on, it will prime for about 5 seconds, then the check engine light turns off with the pump. If your pump is still priming after the light goes off, you might have chaffed wires and would need to inspect and repair the wiring on the fuel pump. | ||

It5 primes for the 5 seconds when I turn the kill switch on and then turns off. Then when I start the bike there is a high pitched sound that sounds like the fuel pump and is constant while the bike is running. | ||

Yes that is your fuel pump, its pumping fuel. If it wasn't running, you would have a hard time going anywhere.  | ||

I notice my fuel pump running when im low on gas. Where you low on gas at the time of hearing yours? | ||

That sound seems to come and go at random with mine. I can't pin down any specific set of variable that cause it... temperature, fuel level, etc. No idea. ~SM | ||

The fuel pump is suppose to prime only for a few seconds at a time. If it is running continuously, you have a fuel pump short circuit due to chaffed wires inside your fuel pump. You must replace the fuel pump wires. You can buy the wiring harness from Buell and pull the pump and replace the wiring. The Buell Service Manual outlines how to do this and what you need. If you do not replace the wiring harness, the chaffing will get worse and eventually, your fuel pump will fail leaving you stranded until you replace the pump. | ||

When you first turn the key on the pump will run for a few seconds and stop. When you start the engine the pump will run again as long as the engine is running. The pump will ether be quiet or loud - that raucous sound is the pressure relief valve doing it's thing. On my bike when turned on for the first ride the pump runs quietly, then just before it shuts off having built pressure the relief valve begins to regulate pressure and it gets loud. Once you are riding the sound will change depending on how much fuel demand is occurring. | ||
