Hey guys, I have a Garmin Zumo 550 that won't take a charge from the motorcycle mount. Here are the facts: -It worked in the past. The last time I used it was Oct/Nov of last year with no issues. Now, it doesn't work. -It DOES take a charge from the car mount. -All fuses look good, including the in-line fuse on the Zumo power cord. -It's plugged into the accessory plug that piggy-backs off of the Buell heated grips.' -The heated grips work fine. -The Zumo still does not take a charge when plugged into the main accessory jack that the heated grips plug into (and not the piggy-back from the grips wiring). With all this in mind, it seems that there has to be an issue with either the power cord or the mount. Has anyone run into this before? | ||

I've got the same issue with the car mount - still need to test it on the bike though to see if it's the car mount or the SatNav. | ||

It sounds like, as you said, it is in the plug on the mount or something in the mount. There are three places that could be causing problems, based on what you have said. 1. The metal connectors on the bottom of the mount may be fouled or corroded. Check the metal connectors on the bottom of the mount to make sure they are clean. If they look dirty or corroded, try to clean them off with a cotton swab (Q-tip) and some alcohol. 2. The mini usb port on the mount could be fouled or corroded. There is a mini usb port just below where the power cable screws into the mount. If anything is in this port, shorting it out, it will mess with the mount operation. Look and see if there is water or dust in there and clean it out. 3. The connection to the mount from the power supply Check the power connection where it plugs into and screws into the mount. You might want to unscrew it and unplug it to make sure the plug is not corroded. While you have the power cable off, you can check it for continuity on each pin. If the cable fails the continuity test, then the obvious problem is the power cable. Hope this all helps. Mike | ||

Mike - Base terminals are clean. I'll check the mini-usb port. Didn't think of that. I'll also take off the power cord from the base and see how that looks. I have no way to check the continuity, though. So hopefully the USB thing does the trick. | ||

Most volt/ohm meters have some way to check continuity if you happen to have one laying around. | ||

Mark: You might try jumpering power to the plug to see if it will get power that way. Mine is powered from a connector strip that is key controlled so it won't power up until the key is on. Radio Shack has some pretty cheap DMM for ~$20. They come in waay handy in situations like this. THey are actually small enough to keep on the bike for trouble shooting. Let us know what you find. The mounts also have a tendency to go out, so it may just be the internals of the mount itself. Mike | ||

Neil - Not sure I understand what you are saying... The one thing I never got into with fixing vehicles was electrics, so I get a little lost once past the basics. Mike - I got your PM about the mount - thanks for the heads up - that's a lot cheaper than I was figuring it was going to be. | ||

BTW - I sent an e-mail to Garmin and it looks like they may replace the mount for me. | ||

They sent me the address to send my mount to. I figured I'd be SOL going this route since the thing is a year and a half old, but it looks like they're standing behind it. | ||

Happened to me - turned out it was the mount. Talked with the Garmin representative at Laguna Seca last year and he loaned me a demo mount to try to see... sure enough it was... so he GAVE it to me!!! Said he wasn't allowed by Garmin to actually sell it. Kinda cool. I'm betting it's the mount. Oh and it was a year out of warranty too! (Message edited by slaughter on May 18, 2009) |
