those all look like great options. One question though...do they need some sort of bracket to hold them out and away from sagging inward? Especially those Ortleibs...they look like a great option. | ||

Re. the Ortleibs - I have pannier hoops on my Uly, but I don't think you're going to need brackets to keep them in position. I think there are instructions on the Ortleib Web site for mounting. | ||

Hey Staves, What do you attach the straps of your Orleibs to? I know you just throw them over the seats, but don't you have to strap them down to keep them from flapping around? And how about riding 2up with the saddlebags on? Enough room for passenger legs? Thanks! | ||

Sorry - I have the Buell/Hepco-Becker racks. No hard bags attached. The Ortlieb bags lay on top of the seat, the weight of whatever is in them keeps them in place. There are also straps you can attach to the frame and one that joins the two bags across the rear of the bike. I'll try to take some pics tomorrow. The bags are slightly angled so there is enough room for passenger legs. | ||

The only thing I dislike about soft bags is that there are just too darned many arseholes around that feel they own everyone else's stuff. Thieves I'm talking about. You could never just leave those beautiful looking Ortliebs on your bike and enjoy a movie at the theater without worrying the entire time. Getting ripped off is one of the worst feelings because you feel violated and helpless because so many POS lowlifes feel they have a right to anything that isn't locked down. Locked hardbags give you a feeling of security and are for the most part left alone by the scum of the earth and other bacterial diseased individuals that live among us. | ||

Totally agree with you, Electraglider! I just don't want my legs under those sharp hardbags sliding down the road or trail. I hate thieves more than anything and am looking for the next time I can get away with burying one or more in a shallow grave. | ||

Hey, for once I agree with EG_1997. Soft bags have their advantages, but dealing with the scumbags, that's the one BIG dis-advantage. Had a car stolen out of my driveway...makes me a little paranoid, I guess..... | ||

True story: Back in 1977 I was in the Marines and had rode over on my CB750F to the base theater at Camp Lejeune to catch a movie. I always strapped my goggles over the front headlight housing so that I didn't have to carry them around. When I came out of the movie I noticed two of the camp guards near my bike and one of them had my goggles pulled over his helmet Rommel Desert Fox style. I approached him and demanded my goggles back and he quickly said that he was afraid they were going to be stolen so he was holding them for me. I got my goggles back but was pretty sure that SOB was a thief that was caught red handed. Being a camp guard, he was packing an M16 so I was smart enough to call it a day. No matter where you are at they are lurking about. | ||

I too agree that for security proposes the hard bags are a better option. However, they a exponentially more expensive so I'm gonna have to take a chance with soft bags. I always leave my tank bag on my bike and I haven't had a problem yet. I never leave things of much value in there though...mostly gloves, sunglasses, small tools, etc. | ||

I put anything valuable in the top case and lock it. If you want to take the Ortliebs with you, they come off in a few seconds and have handles. Each bag has its own should strap, too. I've never felt comfortable leaving my tank bag on the bike - then again, I live in Chicago. | ||

Hey Hangontight, Do you have a plan for the side rack? With the saddlebags, you will have to use a side rack to keep the bags from flopping around. I don't think you need a side rack. The Oxfords that I bought are designed for sportbikes and they use the side portion of the seat as the brace..they kinda ride higher, from the picture's I've seen the tops of the saddlebags are higher than the seat. I'll post up pics and a review once mounted. The Ortliebs might be a different story...I agree that they might flop around a little. | ||

Bculy, No fool on the "spendy" part. Is price that hi because the volume is very low or because some of us are morons? Wish I could get an estimate of how many could be sold were someone to rip-off the design. | ||

I picked up the Ortliebs from Carvbuell yesterday and figured I'd try them out last night.    They mounted up pretty well considering I don't have any luggage hoops for them to rest against. These pictures are taken when the bags are empty. When I loaded the bags up with some stuff sitting around in my garage, they swing in a little bit but there's nothing to worry about them rubbing on. Overall, I'm really happy with them. I think they complement the style of the Uly. I like the idea that if (when) I get caught in a rainstorm, there won't be a drop of water getting in. My wife was happy too because she will be able to get her hairdryer in one of them when we go on weekend trips! | ||
