OK so they ordered the 09 cluster to replace my 08, which was experiencing the parasitic battery drain that is so well documented. First, the factory shipped the wrong one (another 08 I guess). Then I was told there was a 6 week back-order (it ended up being even longer). Now, after I took my bike in and left it there all day, they tell me: They can't install the 09 because the odometer is set to zero, rather than something like the actual number of miles on my bike. They say they have to order another one pre-set to my approximate mileage. Has anyone else heard this? I thought the thing "marries" with the ecu - does that not transfer the mileage? It sounds like BS, because by the time the new one arrives I will have a lot more miles on it than I have now. Regardless, I'm getting pretty pissed. |

Preset is BS. They hook it up the new cluster to the bike and after 30 minutes it learns the mileage and VIN from the ECU. There is actually a 30 minute count down timer that comes up on the cluster. Have them read the darn Electrical Diagnostic Manual. |

Well, My experience with my 08 1125R when my cluster had to be replaced was that the factory has to set the odometer mileage to match what was on the broken instrument cluster. Because of federal anti-tampering laws regarding odometers, the miles must be set at the factory or authorized instrument repair centers. My cluster stopped recording mileage and had a blank speedometer/odometer for about the first 350 miles. Then , it started working again sporadically after that. But every time it blanked out, the odometer stopped recording miles. The dealer had to order a cluster to be set with 1000 miles on it then shipped to the dealer to install in the bike. Yes, the cluster and the computer have to "marry up", but doesn't concern mileage. |

Bman The "marry up" does concern mileage, again, read the Electrical Diagnostic Manual. Many of us here have replaced our 08 with 09 clusters. It's well known and documented the mileage does not have to be preset by the factory. I'm guessing your case was different, because there were was "uncaptured mileage" with your bike. |

sorry, I guess I was misinformed by the techs at the dealer. Although, in my case, I think the mileage was set at the factory to correct the missing miles. |

I do appreciate everyone's experience. Based on Spectrum's post, I asked them to "read the darn Electrical Diagnostic Manual" before shipping the piece back. I will post up later when I find out their intentions. Thanks again! |

Neither the IC nor the ECM come new with mileage or VIN info. They both acquire that info while "marrying". Do NOT buy a used IC or ECM, it's a paperweight after it's been married. If you replace BOTH at the same time, one of the two WILL have to be set-up with mileage/VIN. Don't know what that entails, haven't been there yet. When I got a new IC last Fall, seems like there was nothing on the display but the timer in the top corner. As soon as it had counted off the 30 minutes, the full display came up. Got a big grin when I saw the gear indicator working. Z |
