Hey Everyone,

I've been wanting to do this project for awhile but with other issues on the 11 so it was in the shop for quite a while.

So today I dropped the bike off at AF1 Racing in New Braunfels, TX to have a Power Commander 3 install. Yup, you are correct, DynoJet doesn't make a PC3 for the 1125 series so I'll make one myself.

AF1 has a Factory Pro Eddy Current dyno for a 4 Gas EGA sensor. I like this set up as it allows the tuner to "see" into the combustion of the bike. The whole idea is to get the most effecient combustion for a given rpm and throttle setting. On many bikes the result is often leaner not richer. It all depends on the bike, throttle position, etc, etc.

Because Buell isn't an "open" source bike we'll be using ECM Spy, the software from the banded guy and of course the results from the dyno sessions to make the changes.

We will begin with a baseline run. Being an Eddy Current I suspect we'll be at 119 to 122ish.

Usually a tuning session is pretty straight forward but because this is new territory it may take a little longer. To do this we will be using a PC3 from an early model Aprilia RSV1000. I sent AF1 photo of the FIs and a variety of other plugs a while ago so they could begin planning the project. There maybe a little splicing but nothing too major.

As far a results I'd guess we'll be in the neighborhood of where the "banded guys" software puts you power wise and I really want a smooth throttle and a smoother running bike. Another reason I'm doing this is once the PC3 is installed follow on mods will be very easy to dyno tune into the package.

As I get results I'll post them.

Cheers!

Pete

Oh, part two of this project is a custom made, complete exhaust system. It is nice to have a close friend who has a machine shop in their garage. : )

Sounds like a cool project! Please keep us posted with all the wonderful details of your efforts!!

I didn't know XB9 was banned...What did he do? I thought we were just prohibited from mentioning his software by name since he's not a sponsor?

FYI my source at DJ said they are working on the prototype PC-5 for the Buell 1125. Having tuned twenty or so Buells with a serial port PC3 please be aware there are a lot of issues.

Dyno Guy, I emailed DJ about two weeks ago and they said they are NOT going to produce a product for the 1125 series. I'd heard a rumor they were so I thought I'd ask. I'd love to have a PC5 but at this point I'm tired of waiting and decided to move forward with the project. If they would have said yes we will within the next few months I would have waited.

Were these air cooled Buells or 11s that you tuned?

Thanks

Pete

Over the last several years I have done some prototype stuff for them from time to time, so my source is up the food chain from the sales or even the tech support groups. They (DJ) had a lot of customer support issues with the older serial port PC-3 so they did not even produce a USB version. All of this was for X1 / S-3, the larger closed loop area in the XB ECM just compounded the tuning issues. It could be done and would work well, but not as well as Direct link or ECM Spy.

The issue with the 1125 will again be the closed loop area, but this time there are two of them. For other bikes, they have developed little plug in 02 eliminators that work well. When installed the ECM sees a perfect A/F value of 14.7 and you tune as if your in open loop. I have been asking my source at DJ to sell them by themselves without the PC. They won't even consider it, as they could be use to fix issues with over tuning devices. I will be happy to help any way I can, PM me for some specific hints on how to get past the closed loop issue. Terry - JT&S Performance

Thanks Terry I will. The project got pushed out as I got an invite to attend the track day at Willow Springs on MM Day. When I get back from that we'll get this spooled up.

I'll be using OSB's new flash to lock out the O2s and burn a better flash onto the ECU first.

Thanks again for the offer of help, I'll PM you when I get back in about 8 days.

Pete
