Anyone have issues with the tech specs not adhering to the frame very well? As per the instructions I cleaned the surface with a little rubbing alcohol, the surface temp was warmer than the 80 degrees F the instructions call for. I measure and line up the thing, begin to peel back the liner and now it won't stick in the curve of the frame or at the very bottom where the logo is. I tried to gently pull them back off and I noticed a clear film had been removed from the powder coat of my frame... I get out the heat gun and continue to heat the surface, and pad and it won't stick. I am afraid to take it all the way off as it is removing some type of clear coating from the frame. And when I do get it off, how do I remove that from the adhesive?!? Air box ones went on great, frame not so much. Any ideas? | ||

I'm not sure. Mine went on just fine with no problems. You might want to call Tech Spec and see if they can help you. RB | ||

im pretty sure there isnt a clear coat on the frame since its powder coated. but if there was something it could be stuck on the gripskin takin up all the sticky stuff. best to call them | ||

I sent them an email. I'll keep fiddling with it. What the crap is the clear stuff? Are our frames clear coated after being powder coated? If all else fails I will sacrifice a chicken tonight to the motorcycle gods... | ||

There is a clear film on the back side of the grip skin. It could be separating from the back side of the skin. RB | ||

I just looked at it again. When I peel the grip skin it's bringing diamond blue with it in very thin layers. I got some off and looked at it closely. It's coming off the fuel tank/frame and not letting the sticky stick. Now I'm worried my paint is damaged.  It looks like a really good product and I cannot wait to ride with them, but man it's making me nervous. Hopefully they can answer my email tomorrow and we can figure something out. More than likely I bet, I screwed something up, some how. But I don't see how considering I followed their directions and even used a hair dryer to help maintain the heat like it says. Just my luck today though, if it's not one thing, it's another. | ||

My issue was that they didn't want to stay stuck to the frame. I put them on last week and they started sliding away from the adhesive. I peeled them off. The sticky stuff stayed on the frame, but not on the grip skin. But the small ones on the airbox cover are fine. | ||

I have an 09 (black frame) and they're sticking just fine. They got some abuse yesterday at NJ Motorsports Park and are still looking good. | ||

It didn't stick to my '08 frame either. I phoned the importer and it didn't stick to their 1125 race bikes. I've now used some impact adhesive and it's made a huge difference, my arms don't get anywhere near as tired  | ||

are you guys heating up the frame before attempting to stick the 'skins? Mine worked wonderfully. When I tried my first set over the winter, the frame was too cold (even after trying to warm with a hairdryer) and the adhesive didn't work nearly as well. | ||

If it just wasn't sticking I wouldn't be as concerned... but if you look at the picture in the link I posted... I think it's removing my paint. That's what I am worried about. I rode the bike home it was nice and hot, cleaned the powder coat with Iso. Alky and a paper towel. Got the blow dryer out and heated the frame some more. Measured and placed it, peeled back a part of it then started rubbing it on from inside to outside. Just not stickin and taking some of the paint with it. The Air box ones look great and worked well. As soon as I get a chance I am going to call them. I'll post with details. | ||

Good news! I called Tech-Spec and spoke to Travis and explained the issue to him. He was concerned with the outcome of the frame pieces and set me up with a different type of adhesive that is not releasable/reusable. He did say he would take a look at the frame issue and wanted to know if anyone else has had similar issues. Overall, very happy with the customer support and the fact that they were open to the issue and made a resolution to fix it! I highly encourage ordering a set through American Sportbike. And again no issues with the airbox skins, just the frame. Hopefully this new set will get me fixed up for sure. Thanks for all the comments gents. | ||

My bike is the one on their website and the pieces went on just fine and performed great on several track days and races last year. I'm not pulling them off to check the paint tho! | ||

Travis should get me fixed up. The paint is a little odd looking, going to stop by the dealer and see if anyone knows if I can fix it or not, but when I get the new ones that are permanent. Then it shouldn't matter until then. if anything I hope the powder coating on that side can simply be smoothed out or evened out somehow. I dunno, don't see how because it has to be baked on and all. Although... Buell offers touch up paint in diamond blue. | ||

UPDATE! Got the new gripskins in the mail. Applied them and they stick great! Hats off the Tech-Spec for a fabulous product and outstanding customer service! If you haven't ordered any yet you are missing out. They feel great! Hit American Sportbike up and get a set! Thanks for reading! |
