My boots seem to rub on the frame above the footpegs enough that the paint is starting to get scuffed up. Also, sometimes my heels will rub on the swingarm when cornering. I think the best method to prevent this would be use some of that plastic paint protective film from 3M. My only concern is that the method of application for those products is to basically squeegee the film onto the surface of the bodywork. I'm sure it works fine on a perfectly smooth plastic surface, but the frame surface/paint is pretty rough. Has anyone used this type of product on their frames, or come up with a different solution to the same problem? | ||

I believe others have used the 3M film effectively on the swingarm, despite it's matte surface. On the other hand, you could embrace the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, in which beauty is found in wear, imperfection and the patina of age. Like an old leather jacket, the worn and faded spots make the bike more attractive because they speak to it's usefulness over time. | ||

I just ordered "helicopter tape" from findtape.com It was favorably reviewed in MCN a few months ago. I'll give a report on it when I receive it. | ||

I tried the clear stuff on the swingarm--the kind you wet and it is supposed to stick. It didn't work at all. | ||

Fres, that's cuz there's too much texture on the swing arm. That stuff is made for smooth paint like on a car. I've seen people use generic tank protector pads and cut them to fit the swing arm. Check out the pics of thrustonbuells bike, that's what he used. | ||

Those lower LSL mounts/pegs make your heels hit lower than the triangular guards. I am sure that's what Ron is experiencing too. Duct tape looks really bad, but better than scuffing the swingarm. When applying the 3M or similar type product to a rough surface use a heat gun or hair dryer. By heating the applied material it allows it to "Conform" to the surface. Be careful to not apply to much heat as you risk dis-coloring the material. |
