Im attempting to convince the wife that it would be fun but shes not buying it yet. I want to ride to homecoming but Im wondering if mabey Im asking too much. I do have a select seat. I think she will do it if I persist but I dont want her to hate it. She has only been on two rides with me. The second was a little over a hundred miles and she was a little sore. To be honest so was I. The roads we were on were not very smooth. So is 350 miles on the back of a CityX crule an unusual punishment?
Lots of stops along the way. Maybe see if you can find something of interest on the way. I've never sat back there, but even when I rode 300+ miles I got sore.
I dont usually get very sore. If I get a little sore it doesnt seem to get worse. I have ridden 690 miles in a day and felt fine. I have a feeling riding on the back may be a little different.
I took a girl out on a day trip, she rode 578 miles on the back of my Firebolt xb12r.. we stopped at 127 miles when the fuel light came on.. At the end of the day she did tell me her butt was sore.. but eh! I got to rub it for her!
I just put my heels on the ground and drag them till my bike stops. No need to wear out the brakes or engine
That's what she said....
My girl is about 5'7. Once I got the touring pillion for the Bolt she was able to ride out a full tank of gas. I usually stop anyways just so we can stretch. Leave in enough time to where you don't have to rush. When she starts getting sore have her slap you in the helmet to pull off some where.
The XBS has poor passenger accommodations. I wound up buying a Honda 919 so my GF would go on rides with me. 350 miles on the back would be rough without some kind of a backrest.
I was looking at buying a Ural. I asked my wife if she would ride in the side-car. She said, "Would You!?"
I bought a 9R.
Would I ride 350 miles on the back of CityX? Hahaahahahahaha-a-no.
She can take the Orange toy. You ride. She does passenger at homecoming. Make a nice holiday of it. Maybe she'll see a bike she likes and you'll ride together next year.
I too can do 350 miles with no problems on my Select Seat. No way could I do that with a passenger on the back without getting uncomfortable- you have basically no ability to move with her on the back. Buy her her own bike, I'll have my gf's Blast for sale soon, and I'm pretty close to you
(She'll soon be on my XB, as I'll finally be buying a tuber)
I've done close to 300 with a passenger on my 12R. Definately going to have to stop and let her rest, yourself too.
I piled on 1055 miles by myself this last weekend in three days. I'm doing fine today, rode yesterday for about 100miles.
It'll definately be doable, just get her on a couple longer rides to let her feel it out before hand. Tight fitting clothes help too, less likely to bunch up and cause pressure points and chafe etc..

You know guys, I think I'd agree with you about an XB-S, but Buell does make this really cool bike called a Ulysses that's said to have passenger accommodations only 2nd to a Gold Wing.
99% of the time Im solo and I actually prefer it that way. I love the XB9 and will not replace it. My wife is starting to become interested in my Buell hobby. If she continues I will consider adding another Buell (most likely a Uly) to the household. The XB9 will probabally never leave my hands. I love this machine.
Well I think Im leaning toward hauling even though its against everything I stand for. I may split up the ride and make a longer vacation of it if the weather looks like it will cooperate. Then I can reduce each day to 200 or less miles. We are going to do a few ride ahead of time to get a better feel for whats up.
tell her to follow you to homecoming in your vehicle that way she can take more clothes!! You wont have to haul around baggage. When you get to homecoming, she can ride everywhere then!! WIN WIN
I had a new City-X in '05. I thought the same thing, 'man I love this bike and I will never get rid of it'. Then I bought the Uly in '06. Three months later I sold the S simply because it never got ridden again.
The wife has her own bike, but she prefers the back seat on the Uly.
Rpm4x4- I got a bike for my wife, and it was the best trade I ever made!!! j/k though, we're planning to make the ride to homecoming too if work schedules permit. Maybe she could two-up with my wifey on the Dyna for part of the trip if she gets a little uncomfortable? Besides, Pam rides like a little old lady most of the time, and that Low Rider sure is comfy... damn shame it handles like a schoolbus...
what days are you guys traveling to and from? my girlfriend and I are trying to make our schedules work to make it there, would be fun to ride with some other buells. we live between you guys in maple grove and brooklyn park.
I bought my 12R 500 miles away from home with the wify. In January. We flew out and rode it home, it was a blast, we both froze but frequent stops to sight see helped. Since then we've done other long rides together, never 500 in one shot again but 100 miles+. I finally broke down and added some better thicker foam to her seat.
I'm sure everyone here has experienced the "new riding position" soreness. GEtting your muscles to relax in the right way to avoid horrible back or leg/shoulder pain. Some people have told me that the xbs is a 50 miler. I tend to agree... But I'm older than some here and taller, and have a serious case of frog butt. I have an xb9sx.. I know it has foot pegs for a passenger.. but I have a NARROW ass.. There's no room for anyone to sit behind me in any sort of worth while way. Buy your girl a Blast! and be done with it.
If anyone sits on the back of a sport bike for any amount of time.. you can be sure they are doing if for you not them.
My girlfriend and I went to Vegas and back in ONE day (700 miles total) on my 12R and it wasn't too bad for me. She hadn't been on the back of a bike that much so she was sore, but nothing a day of rest didn't fix. So it shouldn't be that bad.
