There was a big stink on either a BMW or Mercedes forum a few years back, I can't remember which. A 16-year-old had logged on and was asking speed-related questions. Some of the members tried to warn him, while others gave him some pointers. Not long after, the kid totaled the car at high speed and died. I think he also may have taken a friend or two with him. The media made a stink and tried to point the finger at the forum. But that pales in comparison to the parents, especially the dad. | ||

Bolt - that incident was a BMW M5 that the kid took to an airpot runway, ran off the end and smashed into a tree. He did have 2 or 3 other people in the car. These guys are equally as stupid. In high school I had a 1978 Monte Carlo - looked bone stock, but had a Corvette engine in it and some other goodies. Long story short, I nailed it one night, and I estimate I was going around 135-140 (speedo only read up to 85 in those days, lol). Anyways, red light was coming up, so I hit the brakes and the pedal just sank to the floor. Scared the shit out of me, and that was the last time that car ever went over 70 mph, lol. | ||

Nobody gets a VW beetle for their first car anymore, lol. I think I'd rather have my kid in a big heavy Audi with crash cages and air bags than a tin box, Hummer-ediable VW bug, lol. I think every kid's first car should be a Volvo 240. Safe, big, reliable, slow as dirt. | ||

I think every kid's first car should be a Volvo 240. Safe, big, reliable, slow as dirt. A very wise statement. My first vehicle was a 1993 2wd Ford Ranger 4cyl auto. That thing got the worst fuel economy. How the hell does a slug that only get 17mpg on a good day.  | ||

I had a 1970 AMC Gremlin in high school  , it had the 199 c.i. straight six....yet I still managed to speed around like an as$hat. I think no matter what the vehicle is, the fascination with speed is in our genes. Looking back over the years, I'm sure MOST of us are lucky to be alive. My first car was a '65 Opel Kadett...1100cc the engine looked like you could put a ring thru it and hang it from a keychain...it wouldn't go beyond 60 mph if you drove it off a cliff, but it got like 38 mpg....and it was tough!!! like handing your kid a loaded gun and not telling him what it is... sad really. my first vehicle was a 1987 ford bronco (full size). big, slow, built like a tank. had to work at a parts store and a grocery store for 3 years to save up enough to buy it... those were the days! | ||

My first car was a '76 Olds Cutlass Supreme, two door with the 350 rocket. Man that car was heavy but buried the 120 speedo one night on the super slab then slowly came back down to the posted 65 speed limit. No scary stories just fast. Went from that to a '86 Chrysler Laser four speed then to a '81 Z-28 with a .030 over 350. I owned a Jeep once with the 151 Iron Duke, it would barely pull itself out of it's own way but would climb a telephone pole if it could get traction. | ||

I have to add mine - my first ride was a '77 Cadillac Sedan De Ville with a rod-knockin' 425 motor. That car could not get out of it's own way. | ||

Ok, here's mine. Friend had a 1980 Camaro, and we did a trip that normally would have taken an hour in 20 minutes, at night. Speedo went to 80, and when we slowed down we thought the needle was stuck, only to see it finally move when it felt like we were going a lot slower. We were 16-17. Oh, my car was a 1986 Cavalier that had a hard time accelerating or even getting up to 65mph, so I didn't slow down much for corners. | ||

Heh...I had a powder blue '92 Escort with a freaking 3-speed. I hated that car, but it was mine - paid for myself, insured myself, etc. It did get me from point A to point B, albeit in a dreadfully slow and ugly manner. I put 38K on it before selling it for $100 more than I paid for it and bought my Dakota.  | ||

" Mine was a '67 Dodge pickup, 1 ton running gear, and jacked up. When you're that big, and that heavy, who needs crumple zones? I wrecked it and wasn't even buckled in. Lost the bumper, no other damage, no injury. DESTROYED the other car. When everyone else drives new squishy cars, classic steel WINS. However, the thing was totally uncontrollable over 60mph. Needed a front sway bar BAD, and drum brakes all 'round suck. ~SM | ||

Yeah first vehicle 86 Jeep 4cyl. Tooka half hour to hit 60 but would still crawl through fender deep mud and not stop. lol Dad still wasnt happy. |
