Over half of all Walmart products are "Made in China". Did you read the article in its' entirety via the link I posted to Steve? Pretty interesting reading. Too bad most people haven't a clue and probably wouldn't care if they did.

Well this is s Hewlett-Packard Pavillion 563w, seems to have the standard HP warranty support guide enclosed. Everyone in my company has one on their desk. That is part of the reason I got it. But I will read that aritcle. |

I actually hadn't read the article you mentioned, but I have now.
I have always hated Wall-Mart, even without knowing any of their practices. I dont like that the employees routinely suck, the stores are dirty, and presentation is lousy. I will drive to find a Target anyday. But of course, that is all personal preference. And also personal preference is that if I'm making a major purchase I am going to go to a local retailer that has some in house availability. Having a retailer that will stand behind their product is way better than any factory warranty that you can get.
Budo, you also need to realize that most likely your employer buys from a direct retailer. And usually the computers that employers have are not just off the shelf consumer models, they are corporate versions. Not always just usually.
Just my 2 cents.

good article, scary stuff, most of which I already knew or suspected. But the scariest part of the article is this paragraph:

I'll leave this subject alone for now, but someday when you have some time to kill, try this Made in China site out. Please do me a favor and really check this site out and see how these U.S. contractors are taking advantage of the system. Trust me, someday we'll all pay for this.
BTW, I spent a year working and living in Tianjin China. The company I work for was a sub-contractor under Bechtel on a huge Motorola semiconductor facility called MOS 17. Motorola invested nearly $1 billion to construct MOS-17 on its' 80 acre site. I also worked on Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant in Zhejiang province. Now that I look back on this experience, I can see that I was wrong taking the jobs.

OKAY I'm gonna have to say it....
"Dude, I'm gettin' a Dell"
Called around to a few local places and priced a system and everytime Dell had them beat by $300-$400. That was including shipping and taxes!! Some places only had a one or two year warranty. I just couldn't beat the Dell for what I wanted.
So here's what I ended up with:
2.4ghz pentium IV
512 RAM
60 gig hard drive
CD-RW
DVD-rom
sound blaster live 5.1
64 mb video card with tv-out
17" flat panel display
standard keyboard/mouse
preloaded XP Home Edition-(subject to change)
4 year at home warranty
The real bonus was that I called on the right night!!! I got FREE shipping, the CD-RW was a FREE 2nd bay option, a rebate on the memory upgrade, a rebate on the 4 year warranty, and a $100 dollar mail-in rebate. It was a pretty good deal from my perspective. After all the rebates and upgrades, etc. the total system was just around $1,400. Without the freebies and rebates I would have had to go lower on some things, but I took full advantage.
Thanks to everyone who put in their opinion and advice. It really did help a lot.

Nothing is free. If two things cost the same, but one has a "free" thing, it is likely the other has higher quality parts. Free means they either increased the price of the system or decreased their cost to make the system. Check out various real-world ratings of the motherboard, video, etc. in the system they're selling you. ATI is my favorite for video, but that's just me. |

P.S. The system is very quick. I am very satisfied so far. Dell said the system would ship on the 27th and take 3-5 days to arrive. I ordered the system on Sunday the 19th and received it on Friday the 24th. Underpromise and Overdeliver. Makes for a very happy customer in the end.
I just hate having to go through all the new software garbage when you first fire up a program. Why does everything say that you don't have what you need? You have to go get the "platinum" version to be happy. Arrggghhh... |

Sure, I'm just curious, if its not to much of a hassle. I never could find out exactly what the specs were on their motherboads. Plus I never saw anything mentioned on their site or the literature I get in the mail.

I'd be surprised if you can find out (before the system gets there and you open it) which mb you're getting. I think either they don't want you to know, or (in this day of JIT parts delivery) they don't know what you'll be getting until it's shipped.
Is it just me or have all manufacturers stopped supporting processor upgrades? I remember when they used to advertise systems saying how fast a proc you could drop in, plus give you support on doing it. Now any pertinent info is buried deep on their site. |

I bought my daughter one of these for Christmas. Actually, the 900mhz version of it, which they were selling for $199.99. Damn cheap for a computer with an AGP slot. It works great.
Seeing as how the on-board video on most low-cost systems is junk, and she didn't have a TV, I also got her a $127 All-in-Wonder Radeon AGP to go in it, as well as a $45 Lite-On DVD player. So she's got a full TV/PVR/DVD setup with remote control and it didn't cost a hell of a lot. Plays the DVD's very smoothly.
There's only 2 PCI slots, but it has on-board USB, LAN, & audio, so there's not much need. Had to get her speakers too but those are cheap.
Never used the Lindows, I stuck Windows 2K on it from the get-go. |
