macbuell, race muffler, 9 pistons and head work will get you around 103hp at the wheel on our dyno. For reference a stock XB12 makes 91hp on the same dyno. HP is only part of the equation, you end up with a really nice flat, slightly double humped torque curve. Shifting becomes an option.... |

I had the bottom end work done by Dark Horse Crankworks. They are the folks that build the endurance engines that the James Gang races (Paul James' team last couple seasons and this year on the 1125R). Tell John Dahmer that Slaughter recommended you call him and he's likely to hang up on you and have his phone disconnected (insert smiley here) - but they also have most of their prices posted on the website and are pretty responsive to emails. Obviously this hadn't been done until last year when they beefed up the bottom end so there just aren't tons of folks with this work having been done outside of racing. Pic might not show it very clearly - but the left is the 2008 - I also had it lightened and balanced. The right is stock. You CAN see the larger bearings in big end of C-rod and in the crank bearings:

Oh wow! A noticeable difference in the crank! This is good stuff guys! A friend of mine who is an at home mechanic said I should ask about cooler plugs if I am bumping up the compression with XB9 pistons. Anyone had a problem using stock plugs or did you upgrade? More powerful ignition system or currrent? With the way this is going I already have a good idea of what I am going to do and places where I can get some good parts Thanks! |

Wes - sent you a PM regarding the head work a few days back. Slaughter - approximate cost for the crank work, including 2008 crank/flywheel? Thanks. This is a great thread with solid references. |

I'll have to go look at my receipts. It wasn't cheap but I had totally destroyed my engine so had to have a complete rebuild anyways. I wouldn't do the work unless the engine were going to come apart for a rebuild anyways. |

The new 2008 crank is around $650 and you can count on around $550-$650 for the machine work. Schmitty |

Started pulling the motor apart and it looks like oil cooling jets blew off and are in the bottom somewhere with a piece of front piston. Once I get the case split, I need to exam the internals and find out if any more peices are anywhere. I would like to reuse the same crank to save on cost, but if I have to get a new one, I might as well go with the 08. Does it have to be balanced? Is that the machining you are talking about or does the case have to be modded to fit the larger end of the crankshaft? Fingers crossed for minimal repairs! Thanks! |

I had the cases bored to fit the 3 13/16 bore (1169cc) You would be well advised to have the system balanced with the new pistons... maybe lightened too. Cases DO have to be modified to accept the fatter crankshaft spindle. I for the LIFE of me can't find the receipts (new house, JUST finished moving all my sh*t out of storage) - but recalling, it was almost exactly $1500 for the new crank, bearings, case boring, lightening/balancing... I can't recall if the new CP pistons were part of that or not. |
