Hey folks - Ian's at it again. (I've been very pleased with his windscreen brackets) I noticed he's come up with a front mount saver. Seems like a good preemptive add on - any one had any experience with it ?? | ||

As someone is asking, I'll chime in with my experience of it. Iain (Strada) was kind enough to give me one in exchange for my old snapped belt (for research into a future farkle in the pipeline) as he noticed that my front engine mount is on it's way out. I fitted it but on my first ride with it it felt as Iain described a shot mount would feel- like riding on corrugated iron so I removed it and will just replace the mount when it gives up. It'll be interesting to hear other peoples findings if they've used one, I did wonder if a similar item made from a slightly more squishy material would serve the purpose better. I wonder if I'm the only one to find this problem with the mount saver, I didn't like to say anything before as it was a freebie. | ||

Hi, Gordon, if you are getting bad vibration with it fitted it probably means that the mount is on it's way out allowing it to transfer all it's load easily onto the 'saver. The 'saver device is intended to help prevent the damaging deflections that cause the cracks and tears in the first place. | ||

I installed the mount saver on my brand new 2009 XB12X and found the ride to get very rough, I feel ever little imperfection in the road now. Especially noticeable is engine vibration when rolling off the throttle during deceleration. I plan to try slightly softening my suspension settings to see if that tradeoff is acceptable. Strada, any other thoughts from your experience? | ||

No, I have no experience with the mount saver. At a guess, it sounds as if the mount/isolator needs the space to work properly. | ||

I've used mine from day 1 on my replaced engine mount and haven't noticed any degradation in mount performance - my first mount lasted less than 1000 miles and showed very early signs of cracking - like 1-200 miles. I wouldn't assume that because the bike is new that the damage isn't already starting. Have now done 8k miles on the new mount and no signs of cracking/tearing so conclude that the mount-saver has been doing it's job. | ||

Fair point; my first mount only lasted about 600 miles. | ||

Wotcha Iain, Fair dos, I'll try it again when the original mount lets go and I have a fresh one on. I'll report back with my findings. My mount has done 18,000ish now, ain't it funny how the parts that we know will fail all do so but at wildly varying mileages? (Belt, wheel bearings, etc, etc) What's up with that? Edit: Saying that, I bought the bike with 4000 miles on it so it might not be the original mount but it has done at least 14,000 miles anyway. R32NJ: I seriously doubt that changing your suspension settings will solve the problem and you don't want to loose the handling qualities you bought a Buell for do you? Try it by all means and let us know how you get on please. Having said that, Ulyrat handles just as well as the day I got it with all the extra shite I've stuck on.......NOT! I ordered the mount saver from Strada recently, as well. Before I installed it (which takes 3 seconds, literally), I felt that "corrugated iron" feel on decel. Now, with the saver installed, that feeling has vanished completely. I thought it was my brakes pulsing that was causing that feel or something, but the 'saver really did save the day. I'm very happy with it. |
