Hello Buellers! I had the brilliant idea of putting uly handlebars on my 2005 xb12s. So I bought a new Uly bar, new throttle cables and a new clutch cable. I installed the clutch cable first and there is too much play in the handle. I can put my finger between the lever and the perch. It's as if the metal part of the cable was 1/2 inch too long. I noticed that the cable is threaded in at the engine cover but it doesnt look like a good idea to adjust it there because the little seal will not be stopping the oil from leaking out. I noticed that my factory cable was snugged up against the cover so I dont know the correct way to fix this. THEN THE THROTTLE CABLES I installed both of them and same problem. Both cables are too long. There is barley any action on the throttle body. I noticed that if I have a friend hold the cables 1/2 inch outward from their mounts on the throttle body, they work flawlessly. Here again I am trying to figure out what to do. There is no adjustment at the throttle body and the adjustments at the throttle are not helping at all. It is as if both wires inside the cables were 1/2 inch too long each. Any help is apreciated. Thank you! |

have you tried using the original cables with the new bar? Just a thought. Smokescreen |

Yes I tried and they were too short. |

If you don't get any suggestions on what to adjust, clipping off the "carb" end and soldering on a new end is possible after careful measuring. I can't find my link for a source of a new end, but I'll look some more. Also, the soldering prep is critical. The clutch has a lot more tension, so not as good a candidate. |

Here is a good guide for soldering http://www.dansmc.com/solder_cable.htm Source for ends http://www.cyclewareables.com/pages/cable_parts/ca ble_control_parts.htm Custom cables http://motionpro.com/custom/index.php and http://www.barnettclutches.com/products/custom_mea suring_guide.aspx |

The original cables can be moved around to potentially reach. I put longer higher bars on the City-X I had. The clutch cable had to come out of the hole it passed through, and moved outside the steering neck where I zip tied it to the upper fork with metal lined zip ties. I did the same on the throttle side. It never caused any problems with use or adjustments. |

Sounds like you have the wrong cables completely from your description. Going off Etennuly's response the right cable would be longer and you'd have to tidy it up. The engine mount position is common to all XBs. (Am I correct?) So that tolerance would be the same. The clutch and throttle are all the same so that tolerance should be the same. If you hold the old and new cables together and measure the inner cable stickout, they should be the same. The overall cable dimensions will differ but not the stickout. |

I did this same changeover on a 2005 City Cross. I did have slack with all the cables but you have to get creative with your routing to take up as much room as possible. Use plenty of zip ties and find the longest route possible. It will work. |

The problem is not the lenght of the cables themselves the cables are the perfect lenght as they should. It's the wires inside the cables that are too long. I am seriously about to give up on this bike. Nothing seems to be working I'm running into problems everytwhere with it. |

I have a xb12s and put on a cityx bar 2 weeks ago. The bar installed perfectly without any other modifications. I used the stock throttle cables and clutch. Are you following the manual for cable adjustments? Have any pictures? |

Not to thread hijack, but are the cityx bars higher or lower than the xb12s bars? |

when you mount them to the throttle body, do you have them screwed all the way in? If so, that's your problem. You will need to back them away from the throttle body as far as they can go, leaving enough thread for the 2 nuts that tighten the cable ends to the mount on the throttle body. I just put Uly cables on my TT. No problems at all. Worked perfectly. |

Neither. Only difference is the color and crossbar. |

Hey Jfman, did you find a solution? I'm willing to do the same swap. |

Well I have to finish this up now. I am 1600 miles away from the bike but I have to figure this out. I think maybe the cable I bought was out of spec... Is that possible? Gonna try to buy a new cable. XB12S with Uly bars... what cable should I buy? Also any difference between the engine cases between a Uly and an S model? Any differences in the clutch perch and lever between the two |

Reading back on this thread, it sounds like your clutch cable was not adjusted correctly (it is a bit of a pain till someone shows you how to do it, as I found the book directions confusing). As for your throttle cables, it sounds like you bought the wrong year cables. They changed the throttle bodies in 2008, so all 2008+ bikes have different throttle cables, so you would need a cable for a 2007 or older Uly. Is there any way to find out what part number you purchased? The only difference between the Uly and S is the bar itself is taller, and the clutch/brake/throttle cables are longer to compensate. Same perches, bolts, grips, switches, etc. The engine is the same too. |

Froggy. It's not an adjustmen thing. I remember measuring the stickout on both cables and it was different. Maybe the uly uses a different perch and lever... Dunno... Gonna try to see about finding out wich cable I bought. I have the bags with part numbers still IIRC. Will get to the bottom of this. (Message edited by Jfman on April 29, 2012) |

Throttle cable issue solved by purchasing the correct year uly throttle cables. I have bought 2009 cables and they were incorrect. Clutch cable issue remains to be solved. |
