Kind of new to the 1125 board so forgive me if this has already been covered but.... So I am looking for a new project since my 12R is complete and I started to look at a few different smashed 1125R's and every dang one of them has a cracked case (all on the left side lower front of the engine). Anyone else notice this with downed 1125's? Is there anything anyone can do to reduce the risk of this happening? Thanks! | ||

Chrisrigers3, I laid mine down on a track day at 120+ mph and ground a hole in the left sidecase. It wasn't a big deal for me to replace and cost less than $200 for the part if I remember correctly. There's no way you are going to lay any bike down and not get serious damage, unless you have a stunt bike cage on it. | ||

Here is a great picture of what I am talking about. Not just one of the sidecovers-the actual engine case. There is absolutely NO protection there. And I realize youre going to do damage when you lay a bike down but a new engine?  | ||

well i guess if its just a part and the motor gets shut down annoying yes but fatal no. | ||

Yes, that is different from the sidecase. I misunderstood. Still, very few sportbikes have the frame going under the engine any more which might offer some protection, but then the frame would be damaged anyway. I'm not sure what you expect. If you crash, shit is gonna break, period. | ||

Looks like the muffler took a big impact. If it wasn't there crankshaft might have got damage. | ||

i totaled mine and engine wise the only thing damaged was the oil cooler and the little black cover on the clutch case. | ||

Thanks for that picture... Something to keep an eye out for on smashed 1125`s, Never seen a XB yet and have looked at many smashed ones with a hole in the engine case.. Thats Scary... | ||

Looks to me like that's where the drain plug was, which sticks out some. That also looks like a HARD hit. I can't imagine that would be typical. | ||

it looks like a curb hit. normally sliding down the road would get that damage. it had to hit something like a curb | ||

A little duct tape and a BFH will fix that.  lol | ||

At least JB weld it first be fore you apply the Duct tape. | ||

My kickstand spring fell off and the bike tipped over in my driveway. Very little visible damage but it still cracked the case. There needs to be some better protection there. | ||

Chrisrogers3, took a look at that bike. I think I would keep looking. That bike looks really bad to me. Probably cost way too much to fix it right. | ||

Oh yeah, JB weld, duct tape and a BFH. Don't forget to add a couple beers.  | ||

Aluminum can be welded even cast aluminum like an engine case. Looking at the damage it doesn't appear to be near any machined surfaces so would make the repair all the more likely. What you might want to look into is see if you can find a welding shop since it does take special equipment, one place I have used with aluminum engine brackets is a local votech school by me. The repairs may not look the greatest but it will function. Then again if insurance is paying, might not matter and they will just get you a new engine. I do agree some sort of protection would be nice, I don't have the equipment myself but I would have to believe some sort of plate could be fabed up to protect the engine. Perhaps something out of diamond plate. | ||

Well here is the deal. I am buying this bike. The price is right at 1700 bucks. The bike has no title at all so it will be a race bike for me. This bike did take a really hard hit, it looks like it slid for a LONG way before coming to a stop, I really hope whoever put her down lived to tell about it. Oh yeah and as for the insurance bit....Thats all fine and dandy for the ones for the street-trying to insure a race bike is a bit trickier. Here is the kicker with welding it up.... Yeah it will weld up no problem at all. The potential issue is you would have to assume and hope that ALL the pieces fell OUT of the engine instead of in (let me tell you it doesnt work that way lol). So then you have to look at tearing it down cleaning it out and then welding it...Oh yeah I forgot to mention the downfall a gasket kit for these dang things is nearly 400 bucks and I can pick up an engine for slightly more. | ||

I don't exactly have the means to investigate at this time but are you sure they gave you the right price for the gasket kit? That seems atleast 200.00 too high. I'll double check that tomorrow when I'm available. | ||

Chrisroger3, I was going to mention that about having to tear that WHOLE engine down and replace whatever it needs, I had just thought you wd. have known that all ready and seems ya did... I would also think ..YEah that engine spinning around with all them bits and pieces within,Just what else needs replacing Inside...???? Theres an engine on Flea Bay now ..so far high bid is around 1500.00 Good luck with all that,have seen more and more 1125`s in auction insurance now going for around 2500.00 to 3000.00 range without a Hole in the engine etc...I wd. expect there to many many more this year... | ||

Yeah I am sure that there will be more parts up on feebay this year. Ive already got a frame swingarm and engine lined up for the bike and with that I will be able to get it running. It wont look pretty but it will be enough to get me on the track and in races still this season. |
