This was e-mail from 1313. Not sure who is on his e-mail list, so I thought I would post it here. April 21, 2009 RIDE FOR KIDS® ACTION ALERT FOR NORTH CAROLINA MOTORCYCLISTS North Carolina House Bill 920, introduced by Rep. Van Braxton (D-Kinston), would prohibit motorcycle operators from carrying any passenger under 16 years of age. The bill was filed on March 31, 2009, and referred to the House Committee on Transportation April 1. This bill would seriously change the way that Ride for Kids® events honor the "stars" we all work to serve. Imagine the disappointment of all those special kids who are under the age of 16 when they are told that they can no longer ride up front on Sunday morning! Many of us here at the Ride for Kids® started out on the backs of motorcycles well before our sixteenth birthday. If you believe that a parent or guardian is best qualified to determine at what age their child is able to be a passenger on a motorcycle, please speak out and stop this legislation. Many families travel and recreate on motorcycles. To deny parents or guardians the right to include their own children in a form of transportation and recreation is an infringement on parental rights. Here's what YOU can do to stop this bill from becoming law: Contact Rep. Van Braxton's office (919-715-3017 or van.braxton@ncleg.net) and respectfully tell him why you oppose HB-920. Contact Rep. Becky Carney's office (919-733-5827 or becky.carney@ncleg.net) and respectfully ask her to NOT bring HB-920 up for a hearing. Contact your representative to encourage him or her to oppose HB-920. Use the North Carolina General Assembly's "Who Represents Me?" link to obtain the telephone and email address for your representative. Here are a few talking points: Responsible motorcyclists with children know how to safely transport their own children and know at what age their children are ready to be a passenger on a motorcycle. Passenger age restriction bills such as HB-920 often result from domestic disputes; an ex-spouse suddenly decides that his or her child is not safe on a motorcycle operated by her or his ex. This issue should be resolved in the courts between the disputing parties, not in the legislature. This bill is not about safety. It’s about parental rights. If this happens in North Carolina it could set a very bad precedent for other states to follow. Please take action now to ensure your rights as a parent or guardian to transport and recreate on a motorcycle with your own children. Stop HB-920 NOW. About the PBTF Ride for Kids® Since 1984, the national Ride for Kids® program and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF) have promoted childhood brain tumor research and provided family support through free literature about brain tumors, educational newsletters, online conferences and college scholarships. With the help of America's motorcycling community, the PBTF has become the world's largest non-governmental source of funding for childhood brain tumor research. All makes and brands of motorcycles are welcome at the Ride for Kids®. Events will take place in 39 cities in 2009, including this weekend in Houston, Texas. What else would you expect from people who believe we as parents are too stupid to be trusted with out own children. MA also has a democrat house, senate and gov. The idiots tried to pass a law mandating helmet for youth soccer because someone thought it was a good idea. The age old rule of thumb is a child is big enough when they can sit on the seat and reach the pegs. My son is 13 and 5'11." Buy the time he is 16 he will be too big to ride on the back of my Buell. |

Right there with you Fish! Our middle one can only ride here around town when we are lucky enough to have Webe's Blast at our house. She can actually reach the pegs on the Blast while she can't on the Uly or M2. Luke only gets rides when he's riding up front in the neighborhood on the Blast. Of course, he's just as happy on the 50! Old oldest (now 14) has been riding since she was 8. She has more gear than some riders I see on the street each day. |

Better hope you never need parts to repair the 50. It is now a federal crime to sell parts for 50cc dirt bikes. It also include up to 100cc bikes. No piece of any item intended for use by children 12 and under can contain lead beyond trace amounts. One can assume this ban includes all thought electric cars that kids use because they have lead acid batteries. Another case of boneheads caring more about looking like they are doing something rather than doing nothing or actually targeting known sources of leaded toys that are not supposed to have lead. How many kids are going to chew on a Honda 50 starter motor? |

Jim, a near 60mpg tank huh. Mark and I did that on the ride we were dodging lightning up by the star. We rode from Roanoke to Youngsville on 3.7 gal. Both Ulys were over 60mpg. (Message edited by M2nc on April 26, 2009) |

66 was a blast. I have the long XB12Ss. Better suited from my size. You were right about the uneven pavement. Made looking ahead through the turn a little unnerving being new to the road and the bike. Not even close to scraping the "warning" studs on the pegs. RE 60mpg? The most I have gotten so far is about 45. That was on the round trip to Wilson. Around town mileage on one tank was just over 30. Granted I was a bit hard on the throttle. |

Had a great ride with Tiffany today. She got to try out her new pink Icon helment, she loved it said it was so much quieter and no wind noise. We got behind a Harley rider for a while and he was so slow. After we stopped for a drink she said she was glad gramppaw went on.I let her lead that way she sets the pace she is comfortable with. Should Buell do something like an 1125X? Like the 12X but with the 1125 motor? |

Should Buell do something like an 1125X? Like the 12X but with the 1125 motor? You know I am split on that. The Uly is a sport cruiser. You can just enjoy the road with out killing it. After riding the 1125R and CR back to back I have to admit the power was a rush, but I was hitting 85mph in just a few seconds and I was not on super-slab. Though I found the bikes quite comfortable at street legal speeds, the engine speeds were like 1K rpm higher at 60mph in sixth gear than the Uly. Add poor fuel mileage and I really do not see that advantage of an 1125 engine in a Uly. I really do not know if I would line up for one. More comfortable optional equipment on a CR like lower pegs, higher bars with better wind protection and you have a great street fighter. You also need to do something the mirrors. I have to admit though I have a soft spot for the CR and the test ride really did not help. |

U4euh, Has it arrived? Is it going on without any 'treatment', or ??? The suspense is killing me - much like it was probably killing you... So when do we all get to see it? 1313 P.S. Whatever happened to Rubberdown's house-wreck...er, I mean house-warming party? |

Add poor fuel mileage and I really do not see that advantage of an 1125 engine in a Uly. Really? - With the latest flash my 1125R gets 36 around town and 40-42 on the highway. Worst I get is 30-32 when riding in the twisties. I got 38-46 on my 03 XB9S. Are the new Uly's really that much better on MPG? |

We had a nice run up NC 89 and back down NC 66 with FB&D yesterday. Had the M2 out for the first good run in a few years, she was happy to be out!
This was the first time Heather's been out for any real distance this year too, and she was very happy to go for a spin on the RK- Ferris is already calling it my $18000 test ride!
Thanks for a great Sunday ride!!! |

I was a Buell-tiful day to run 66. I had a blast out there yesterday. Here is a link for the loop I took. It was a fun "getting to know my Buell" ride. Left McD's on 68 at 9:15. Was home by 11:30AM in time to cook lunch for the family. <http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=3 209+allerton+circle,+27409&daddr=36.416966,-80.231 996+to:nc-89+to:nc-65+to:3206+stoneburg+court+2740 9&hl=en&geocode=%3b%3bfddylaidbly1-w%3bfejrkqidffw 4-w%3b&mra=dme&mrcr=0,1&mrsp=1&sz=15&via=2,3&sll=3 6.411474,-80.227489&sspn=0.027457,0.05579&ie=utf8& ll=36.309039,-80.123291&spn=0.43989,0.892639&z=11> I think I may have passed you on my return trip. |
