Just curious if a new exhaust will void the Buell warranty. I had the local HD shop install a D&D pipe and tune my bike. The bike keeps dying at idle. |

Typically, if the dealer installed it, they have no reason to argue it as a warranty voiding issue. One of the good things about Buells being at an HD dealership, IMO, is that they are probably shocked whenever they see someone come in for service with a stock pipe. |

Yes. Pure and simple . . . . if the warranty claim has anything to do with the motor or engine operation. You modified it or had it modified, you accepted responsibility. Buell often APPROVES warranty work on such bikes. They are under no legal obligation to do so. |

Per your specific dealer. Where I bought my CR...they said for most outside (intake & exhaust, some chassis) modifications, they'll look the other way. Internal modifications...you'r on your own. All ya gotta do is ask...your dealer..! Mike (Message edited by 1_mike on April 23, 2009) |

Bad tune, happen to me. I had a engine replacement and they knew I had a D&D from the start, they never said one negative thing about it |

Auto makers usually don't void warranty work for modifications...however; the dealerships might be the breaking point. Example... I slapped an STS Remote Mounted Turbocharger, Intercooler, Methanol Injection, blah blah blah on my new 2005 Silverado SS. Two years later, the front differential gives out. *Needle Bearings* The dealership and I got into a big pissing contest over the failure being related to the upgrades I installed, tuned myself. Make a long story short, they lost. And here's why. "The failure must directly correspond to the aftermarket modification installed" While you can speculate all day that the added torque and horsepower caused extra strain on the drive train that resulted in the needle bearings failure. I proved that to be incorrect. Here's why... Normally a manufacturer will submit it's products to tests the replicate abuse and stress them to determine how reliable they will be. According to their testing, my HP/TQ was in no way pushing those limits. Additionally, I also found through research that other bone stock SS's were experiencing the exact same failure... Needless to say, they fixed it. Now, had the motor spit the crankshaft out of the bottom after I put all that on...obviously that would be my fault. You have to understand and safe guard modifications. Exhausts aren't really a big deal. Yes the overall performance might suffer from lack of a tune. But unless you cram a spud in the thing you should be fine, and MOST dealers know that. |

Warranty work is not up to the dealer....everything is approved/rejected by BMC. Any dealer that makes a claim that something will/won't be covered in a warranty gray area should be looked at as suspect. As Court stated, Buell has been great at covering these gray area warranty claims. However, don't be shocked if they tighten up the belt a bit due to the general economic environment and rather high number of prior product programs/recalls on the 1125r model. |

1_mike, Very clever idea . I will ask the dealer. Hopefully they tell me what I want to hear. I understand it may be my responsibility. If the Harley Dealer installs a product that voids my warranty, they should make it very clear to ignorants like myself. I don't remember signing anything. |

My XB12 recently had the fuel pump replaced under warranty, the only things left stock on my bike are the frame and motor internals. They warrantied it no questions asked. Last summer they threw a fit about warrantying the stator and voltage regulator, common failure on the older XB's, because of the electrical load I put on my bike. Court nailed it, they don't have to warranty squat if you modify something, but in general they will. |

>>>"The failure must directly correspond to the aftermarket modification installed" That is the Magnuson-Moss Act. A muffler ALWAYS "directly corresponds" to a motor. We're not talking "will" (I saw Buell distribute $15,000 worth of stuff for 10 and 11 year old bikes last month) we are talking "do they have to". They don't. The dealer has something to do with it . . .but it has more to do with the dealers manners and attitude than anything else. |
