I have been in the market for a Buell for awhile now. I have my eyes on a brand new 08 1125r that will have to be shipped to me. It's a great deal so that doesn't bother me. They only thing is I don't have a buell dealer near my area anymore. The closest one is 4 hours away. If I needed warranty work or recall work could any HD dealer perform it? There is one 45 miles away and 75 miles away which is alot closer than 280 miles.

No.

They will have none of the following:
  • Properly trained personnel
  • Specific tools, instruments and equipment
  • Access to parts

well that pretty much sucks.... so if one of the turn signals go out like I have read they do I would have to make a 8 hour round trip.

If you'd like I can write a letter and see if we can get permission to have an untrained HD mechanic who does not have the proper software or equipment to work on your bike go ahead and work on it. You;d just have to sign a waiver of any rights you may have under the warranty.

My best is that you would not want a Harley-Davidson dealer working on a Buell they have never seen before.

In addition, there is no reason that any Harley-Davidson dealer would ever have a Buell turn signal.

To further add to Court's point, I don't think a non-Buell HD dealership could even order the part for you.

However, my dealer has been VERY supportive, in that they have shipped me replacement turn signals without question each and every time I've had one fail.

It all depends on what service you need to have done, and what lengths you are willing to go to get it.

Well Cmekillu,
My best advice is to find your nearest Buell dealer and make sure that you understand what the recalls are, and make sure they are installed at purchase. If an 1125 (08), make sure that they give you the new turn signals (rear lights) upon delivery if you can. Make them check your mirrors (the mirror body shouldn't move around), and make sure that you have the proper flashes. There are three of them. Beyond that, you shouldn't have a lot of trouble. I ride the beejesus out of mine with no issues at all. I did a 150 mile round trip for a mirror on Saturday. However, having a service manager who is a Buell racer is worth its weight in gold. I have two dealers, one 45 miles away and one 75 miles away who fit that particular mold. I also have a dealer seven miles away who hates Buells....I love taking my bikes there for safety inspections. A Harley dealer can run a diagnostic and give you trouble codes. Buy the service manual and the parts manual. If you do that, your local Honda dealer will probably be more than happy to do anything for you that you want if you can supply the parts. (My experience anyway). However, if you need to drive that far for parts, it is easier to just truck the bike to the Buell dealer. Anyway... I don't think you will be sorry that you bought a Buell. If you buy one, I predict you will turn into a fanatic like the rest of us.

I have been to Buell Dealers that I know for a fact did not have the staff, they admitted it. Since most dealers often will only have one Buell tech there are often lapses due to attrition. I have had service visits where the only advantage you mentioned guaranteed was access to parts the rest they just winged it.

Out of the over 200 I have visited, I can think of many that fall in that category.

So, there is a chance that a Buell dealer may not have a properly trained tech. The difference is that at a Harley-Davidson dealer there is a 100% probability the tech is not trained (they can't enroll) and a 0% chance the dealer has access to the Buell software.

I, call me crazy, would always ASK TO SEE that the Tech had attended 1125R school. It was tough to get space and get in early, there is no reason for any technician not to have attended at this point.

There were, if anyone needs to know, 3 recalls on the 2008 Buell 1125R.
