When my stock Scorpion Syncs wore out, I replaced them with Avon Distanzia's, hoping for better dirt-road performance. I like the Distanzia but at 2500 miles of use, my rear tire is looking too worn for my planned NYC-FL-NYC trip next week.

I'll probably just grab another Distanzia before I depart but I was curious if anything new has hit the scene in the last few months? I haven't been playing too close attention.

I hate replacing tires before they're totally dead but I'm not willing to take a butt raping like I did when I bought the Distanzias in Moncton last September. So I figure I'd better start this trip with a fresh rear tire rather than have to replace it on the road.

The problem is, Eric didn't invent the Syncs. He chose them from what was already out there. His choices are no greater than ours.

Ah, but if he convinces a company to make a good road/dirt tire in our size by putting it on as OEM, everyone wins. If he wants to stay with Pirelli MT 60, Scropian Trail.

Scorpion Trail, Metzler Tourance, there's a bunch of 'em out there. All they have to do is make a 17" front and we're in business. With the Uly, new Tiger, and Multistrada, and who knows what else out there, it seems there would be enough of a market for it.

I was always under the impression the Dunflop D616 was made specifically for the Uly. Hell it only comes in one size for the front, and in either 180 or 190 for the rear.

They do - all the above mentioned tires come in a 17" rear.

OK, so I'll ask - if they make 'em in rears, what would be recommended for a guy (me) who uses his Uly a lot for mud, wet grass, singletrack...not jumping or going for speed, but when points A and B are connected by mud, I still go.

My 616 front is about 1/2 life, my 616 rear is not. Time for a new rear. What would folks put on with a 616 front? I've got a new 616 rear on order (don't start - they behave JUST FINE for me) but if I can get something luggy with a little more treadlife (5k on this one), I'll take it. Pirellis are way too 'street' for how I use the bike. If I go non-616, it'll be at least as agressive, if not more so, for off road use.

Thoughts? And please, DON'T start in with the usual "616s suck" diatribe, I've read it all before.

Yes, this just shows that it is possible for OEM classification to get a tiremaker to give us a tire. To bad the 616 are not best tire, lets try again.

I think that would be the 616's you have now or MT 60, which do come in the correct front and back almost. The fattest MT 60 rear is 160/60 R 17 69V TL. If I knew this small difference in width would not be a problem, I would try the MT 60s. All the other rears I kind find are even narrower in what looks like it can handle mud. (I hope I'm wrong about that.)

I posted this in the tire cost thread but it seems this thread has more life:

I might just order another Distanzia and have it delivered to my buddy in Jacksonville, FL. Anyone near there know someplace to have it mounted?

Or if there are any sponsor dealerships in the area, I wouldn't be averse to buying a Distanzia down there and having it mounted.

If you did decide to go with a 160 rear and put on MT60's, I would be amazed if a Uly could ever get to 5K miles on them.

I have MT60's on a KTM 640, and they have very little tread depth when new (I assume that is to make them handle well on pavement despite the block tread pattern).
I really like them on the KTM, but I do not expect to see 5K out of them on the KTM, and the Uly is far more abusive to tires.
Maybe if you just used the MT60 for the front, though, since it does come in a 17" front.
My answer is to keep my Uly out of these conditions, but some of you crazies apparently like combining your Uly with mud!

Doesn't seem like a Buell would have enough volume to make a special tire.
I didn't think the 616 was made for the Uly, since there would be no need for the 190, and I have seen plenty of Dunlop ads selling this tire for naked's/streetfighters. Could be wrong, though...

The 616 *was* developed initially for Buell and the Uly. That doesn't mean Dunlop can't / won't make other sizes and applications available, though.

Now that the weather's getting nicer, I can hopefully put more slab miles on my S2 and keep the Uly for my dirtier excursions (hopefully increasing tread life). Been keeping the S2 off the salt and winter crap this year, but it's about time to start putting miles on 'er again : )

Steve...I just called Adamec. They want $105 to mount and balance the rear LABOR ONLY! Plus, they will only mount and balance a tire they sell. They won't touch a customer supplied tire.

I didn't even stay on the line to find out what they'd charge for the tire. I was afraid I might pass out.

Any other suggestions?

How can you possibly feel safe driving
70 or 80 miles an hour with a tire that
is way too small and not recommended to
even mount on the uly rim??????

180 rim / 150 or 160 tire!!!

Tipsy, Not sure this is good for you but Motorcycle Superstore has a Preferred Installer Program. They ship to the store and you get them installed. I would hope that Preferred means, good and $30.00/tire to mount. Perhaps I am dreaming, but that is what my preferred installer charges.
