What are people using instead of loctite on their oil drain plug? I went to Auto Zone and O'Reilly's and neither have it. |

It's Loctite's version of teflon pipe thread sealant. Go to Home Depot, Lowes, etc. and pick up their equivalent in the plumbing section. Some people leave it off since the plug has an o-ring. |

Permatex Item #56521 High Performance Thread Sealant. Permatex owns Loctite or vice versa. I always use it myself every change, and with a new o-ring. Every o-ring has looked trashed on plug removal. |

I have been getting mine online from Midway Auto Supply..I saw the link but I'm sure I can find it locally or probably I'll just go to Lowes and buy a similar product. Thanks for the link. |

I am using Permatex High Temp Thread Sealant, because that is what I had on the shelf. (Originally purchased when I had to do injectors on my 7.3 IDI.) It has been dealing with higher temps and more vibration on my diesel than I think it ever will on my bike. |

I am using Permatex High Temp Thread Sealant You must not be having any problems with it. Does your drain plug unscrew without trouble? That sounds like a less expensive option than Loctite 565. Why wouldn't teflon tape work just as well? I have that. |

Gamdh's link to the Loctite product shows the same large 50ml tube as the Permatex version #56521. A little goes a long way, and it works very well. IIRC I got mine at NAPA, since nobody locally including my HD dealer carried the Loctite version. At first I was a little leery of drain plugs that required a sealant but to date I've never had the slightest leak, and once the stuff cures the plugs stay put. That allows me to ignore the factory torque spec and comfortably just snug the plugs. The Permatex is good stuff and more available, at least around here. |

Will teflon tape not work and if not, why? |

I guess i would think that stringy little parts of the tape may get in the oil? Just a thought. |

Good thought Fung. I guess that could happen and cause problems. Thanks. I'll just get some Permatex or a product like it at Lowes. |

I think the stuff mainly serves as a very low strength thread locker. It provides sealing, but it mainly prevents the oil plug from loosening and backing out of the drain hole. Teflon tape would not provide that function. |

Got a can of Teflon thread seal @ Lowes for $6, I doubt that I'll need any more for awhile. Thanks everyone. |
