Needed some more sage like wisdom. Will radar detectors work through tinted screens like the 0Gravity Dark Smoke? How about screens that have been spray painted??? Anyone have any experience with one on their bikes? |

ZG smoke is ok. Don't know about painted since it would depend on the paint. |

I run a radar detector allot on various bikes, I usually put it in the top of my tank-bag and run the output to an amplifier and then to my helmet. I would think that the glass in a car would give more insulating properties than plastic or paint. You could find a cop shooting radar and ask him to shoot you to see if your speedo is correct and at the same. time check the detector. |

JMR do you run the Adaptiv on your bike? How does it work out for you? How was wiring it up? |

I just borrowed a buddy of mines' Escort 8500 it works fine behind my painted screen. |

The more opaque a surface is, the less radar it permits to pass through. Radar functions pretty much like light. The darker the tint, the fewer radar waves can pass through it, thus you get reduced warning range. The Valentine 1 website used to have a big writeup about how it all worked, but I can't find it there anymore. or maybe that was written in my manual? In a nutshell, it needs as unobstructed a view as you can manage in order to work properly. If it's hiding behind a totally opaque surface and still detecting radar, it's probably picking up bounces off your helmet and back side of the screen. Radar ricochets like crazy off hard surfaces. ~SM (Message edited by Swordsman on April 08, 2009) |

+1 Swordsman As a long time radar/lidar detector owner there are many things that people don't understand about detection and the different brands. Example... ever got a really hard ping on Ka band and didn't see a cop until a couple of miles down the road way out of your line of sight? It is possible for radar waves to bounce, scatter and reflect off surfaces and still reach a good detector. Lidar is a different story as most of the beam widths are like 15 feet. Based on my previous experience I would say mount the detector as high and unobstructed as possible. As far as brands, there are many flavors, but once you buy a V1 it's all over. It's not very expensive to upgrade over the years unlike many one time purchase detectors, and the performance is spectacular! It isn't water proof though! Also do yourself a favor and check with local law enforcement to find out the legal distance that you can be "trapped" at. Most states it is 1/4 mile away maximum. I know of several people who have got out of tickets because they were able to prove that the officer trapped them way over the legal monitoring distance. |

>>>Radar functions pretty much like light. Radar, *IS* the same thing as light . . . just at a different frequency and opaque has no effect on radar which is outside the visible spectrum. If this is confusing look at the perfectly opaque nose of a Boeing 747 that houses a 4 foot diameter radome behind it. |

i havent but have friends of mine have it and sware by it. it has a mount that goes off the triple trees, it was in motorcyclist this month also, thats what refreshed my memory, i was readin it as i read this post. ill check the mag to see if it was that one or not. but by far the best one for motorcyles. no tickets yet and trust me by saying they usually are on one wheel and doing 100+. |

Cool, I have mine mounted the same way. I added some velcro on top of the IC and bottom of the Passport to keep it from bouncing. Last windshield I had painted was this one:
My 8500 worked fine mounted on the top triple clamp looking through primmer, red and white paint. Later Neil S. |

"Hey Neil, you're one mean looking dude, even in the Aerostich..." Yeah right LOL. That trip to CO was an adventure that consisted of some GREAT riding but TERRIBLE weather! It ranged from hail, sleet, snow, rain and mud-slides (just ask Al ). BTW that wasn't a mean look it was a look of "It's cold out here, a storm is coming, let's get the heck outta here!!" But thanks anyway. Time2Work Neil S. |

Blazin Diggin the airbox cover, was that from American Sport Bike? HWYRNGR As for why I NEED this, my daily drive is about 100 miles roundtrip. The posted speed limit is 55 on a multi lane road however the AVERAGE speed going to and from is +70 WITH traffic. IF you are on a bike and you have 4 cages in front of you and 4 cages behind you and you are ALL doing 70, the LEO will pull you out and write you a ticket... Kinda like profiling in a way. I'm trying to stay that "step ahead" and not give them a reason to give me a ticket while also trying not to get run over on my way to and from work... |

Depends on pigment. Metallic CAN interfere Carbon/graphite CAN interfere - that's why some black pigments MIGHT interfere (they're usually carbon) - virtually all other non-black pigments are non-carbon, non-metallic. |

Yep metallic containing paints can attenuate the radar signal. Raydomes are made of material that is "transparent" to radar. Stealth works by absorbing the radar radiation or, reflecting it in another direction than the source. Now, do you want to hear about frequencies and physic's BS? I'll stop before I reveal something that the statue of limitations hasn't expired on.... |

Painkiller My post was a joke...However, being a motor officer, I tend to hammer the cagers and give the riders some slack...we are trying to survive against the cagers.... This topic is just funny to me coming from the LEO side...I take nothing seriously here |

There are some pretty interesting systems out there. This is an account from a friend who just installed (very meticulously) a very sophisticated "complete car" system. Your results may vary . . . and don't try this at home.
quote:Yesterday was a long tough day for me as my family and I laid my brother to rest. He passed away this past weekend. I spent the day at my parents, being strong for them and my son, fighting the sadness. Ina and I got back home around 11:00PM. That's when I realized that I had left my darn cell phone at my parent's. Damn.... I jumped back in the car and shot back down to my folks place, about 20 minutes South of home. On the way back home, I had taken advantage of the alone time to let some emotions out. I was approaching my exit, but I wasn't ready to go home. I wanted a little more time to myself so I drove right on by. I popped in my Eagles/Nickleback disc (one of my brother's favorites), cranked up my Bose system and continued to torture myself. There was little to no traffic and the highway I was on was smooth and dark. I activated my Sport Chrono and was rolling along pretty good, enjoying a twisty section, listening to loud music, thinking about Dan and all of a sudden, "BLEEP! BLEEP! BLEEP! BLEEP! BLEEP! BLEEP! BLEEP!". Oh no! That's the Laser attack sound and I'm in the middle of nowhere. There are no cars around me, I'm in a valley with little to no chance of experiencing a false signal. I look down and I realize I'm in deep ----, my speedo is showing a speed that is so close to triple digits that you could count the difference on one hand. I jumped on the brakes good and hard, looked at my 9500ci display and saw that it was a frontal laser attack. I started scanning the road ahead for the source, but it was dark as hell, no street lights, and I saw nothing but black. The detector went quiet and then, "BLEEP! BLEEP! BLEEP! BLEEP! BLEEP! BLEEP! BLEEP!" again. Suddenly I see where it's coming from. A Connecticut State Trooper parked in the grass off the left shoulder, backwards with his driver side facing the road and his nose pointed the wrong way. Yup, he's got a damn laser gun in his hand and it's pointed right at me. I don't panic, I continue to slow. He's got me painted for the second time. I look at my speed, I'm now at 64, I double tap the MUTE button. I go by him and the detector goes quiet again, and then "BLEEP! BLEEP! BLEEP! BLEEP!BLEEP! BLEEP! BLEEP!". A glance at the 9500ci display confirms that this time it's from behind. He's nailing me for the third time, and he should be able to get a lock because I've disabled my shifters. I wait anxiously, wondering, "Did the Passport work?" I'm thinking, "Well, if he painted me three times, that suggests he couldn't get a reading the first two times." I look in the mirror and I see nothing but the darkness, but then I see something ahead that sends a chill down my spine. A chaser off on the right shoulder. Sure, that makes sense. There is no way he could quickly pull a U turn to chase someone. The chaser has already got someone pulled over, but that won't stop him from giving me the point over. I watch him real close as I go by, he never even looks my way. Phew..... The 9500ci just delivered it's first save. My heart is pounding and now I'm getting a little pissed, thinking, "WTF man... Is it really necessary to run a speed trap at this hour?" I look down at the clock, it's 11:50PM. I mean come on. There are no cars out here. Who are you trying to save....? After my little scare, I took it easy for a while. Then my disc switches to a Nickleback song and I'm thinking, "Hmmm... It's late, and there are two staties back there, I bet the road ahead is wide open." So like a dope, I let her roll again. I'm up in the sticks and I'm ripping along pretty good. Maybe a little faster than before and suddenly, "BLEEP! BLEEP! BLEEP! BLEEP!BLEEP! BLEEP! BLEEP!". WTF man...? Are you kidding me....? I quickly find the source this time because my Bi Xenons are making some reflectors glow in the sticks up ahead on the right. Yup, another CT state trooper, this time perpendicular to me in between an on ramp and the right shoulder hidden behind some bare bushes, and guess what he's got in his hand? Yup, another laser gun and he's got me painted. I dive into the brakes firmly and shave off 40 mph pretty fast. My reflexes are faster this time because I still have a little left over adrenaline from the last attack. I'm able to double tap the Mute button and make my car visible before he lets go. He kept me painted for a long time, but only shot at me once. I'm not sure if his gun displayed anything at all, but I am sure it didn't display my speed or I would have gotten a beaten. I exited up ahead, about 40 miles from home, stopped in a Burger King to get a water (drive up opened until 2), called a friend and talked for about an hour, then drove home. On my way home I was expecting to find my three new friends. Nothing. They were MIA, probably in some donut shop sharing stories about their nightly 'kills', and maybe talking about that red Porsche that they couldn't get a lock on. I've got over 1,000 miles on my 9500ci now, and this was the first real laser hit I've experienced. I'm happy to report that it delivered the same results that my SRX does, and my goal has been realized, my Cayman is now invisible. The best part, my brother Danny would have been laughing his arse off. Here's to you Dan. My Passport saved me from two tickets in 12 minutes and paid itself off in ~1,000 miles. Watch out my fellow Nutmegers. The Connecticut State Police have gone laser crazy. I mean come on. Shooting laser late wednesday night, on a quiet two lane highway in the middle of nowhere?!? You guys suck!
quote:Well, first I want to straighten something out. Someone did say that the same manufacturer often designs and releases both RDs and RDDs, but it wasn't me. And actually, I don't know this to be the case at all. This is a myth. The company that makes RDDs has nothing to do with any of the companies that makes radar detectors. Now, getting to your question. It's hard to say, but if I had to venture a guess, I'd say that Stalker, the company that makes the Spectre IV RDD is likely to start working hard on a product update that will allow their new products to see the 9500ci/STI Driver/STI-R. In the past, there has always been this cat and mouse chase between invisibility and detectability. The K-40 and SRX used to be undetectable, before the Spectre IV came out. So it's safe to say that in time this could happen. However, it is important to understand that it will be very hard to make an RDD detect these units. Sure, they can easily buy one, take it apart and figure out what frequency the new LOC works at. Then they can watch for this new frequency with the new RDDs, but it's not going to be that easy. The new LOC frequency used by these units is right smack in the middle of a very busy radio frequency band that is used for a LOT of different things. So if this frequency is added to an RDD, the damn thing will be alerting all the time to dozens of devices that are not radar detectors. It's not impossible, but it's definitely not an easy task and in best case for them, it's going to take them a long time to figure this one out.
