Hey guys, things have been rather hectic here lately but I got to work some on the bike today after work. I was down to the flywheel assembly last I posted I think and it was a bugger to get apart. Today I was just tinkering around on it and struck the crankpin lightly with a hammer and things just fell apart. I thought, are you kidding me, all that work and now it falls apart? Anyway, with a half off I slid the connecting rods off the crankpin and square bearings went everywhere. It was just as I had suspected after I rotated the rods by hand, the outer/rear bearings were still round and in their cages. The center/front bearings were square, well the ones that were there anyway and the cage was COMPLETELY gone, not even a scrap. They had even ground into the crankpin but the connecting rod races look surprisingly good, I'm going to measure them tonight. Soooo, anyone got the part numbers for a crankpin and bearings? Also two inner washers for the flywheels? |

Wow! It's nice to know where all that metal came from, thanks for the update. |

Kyrocket: What are the length of the rods, ie: center race(wrist pin) to center race(crank pin) ??? |

Buellistic, best I can tell it looks to be right on 7" with my trusty tape measure. Once I get into everything I'll have more exact measurements. My poor crank pin looks like a shapely Coke bottle. I guess now I need to order my pistons, they're the last thing I need for my 1250, well, that and these crank parts. I will try and photograph all the rebuild and put it in some kind of public forum like Myspace or Facebook so that I can share it. I have been keeping track of possible issues I may have. One being the black push rod tubes Preybird had so much trouble with. I also need to get some stainless oil line to set off the all black engine. |

I'm crossing my fingers and hoping to be up and running by Memorial Day at the latest. I have a Marine friend in Cameroon right now on his way back home, we'll burn some midnight oil, have it buttoned up by late April, early May and break it in through May. Planning on doing Rolling Thunder in DC by way of Camp Lejune. Hope it will be long lasting this time! |

My experience was that the rod to crankpin tolerances are soooo precise that you are best off just getting a matched set of rods and pin from the factory. I had someone fit my rods with oversized bearings to fit a stock pin with a couple of hours labour. My buddy did the same and it took them four hours, Its hit and miss. |
