Hmmm, I haven't seen it. Although if you eliminated the "big scoop" you eliminate the "big cool" just my thoughts. Unless they redirected the air flow somehow...?

Look on UKBEG.COM we've got a picture on there. You get new Rads with the kit but it's very expensive.

I went to UKBEG.COM but I could not find the pods.

Could you post the URL of the page that shows them?

Thanks!

I've got a spare R1 radiator I will be looking at installing in mine. It's got about 25% more core area than the two Buell radiators.

Gotta miss the exhaust and front tire though. But even on the offshore bikes...it's a tight fit.

The other thing to look at...I talked with one of the "Eslick" crew Fontana. With the air flowing thru their radiators backward (or OUT of the side of the pod)...they said it cooled much better than with the air trying to flow inward (where the engine is in the way for good air flow!!!!!).

I'm going to look at that possibility also...

1_mike,

Don't do it. There is no room for a radiator in the middle. The radiators were split to get the engine further forward to get better weight distribution. You WILL have the front tire hit it under braking which will be very bad! Unless you put extended forks on to make a chopper out of it (haha) or cut the frame and move the front wheel forward. That's a big job and will screw up the handling.

Remember this during the Daytona broadcast "...I think he probably picked up a stone and holed the radiator..."

That was on a race track. Race tracks are much cleaner than public roads.
Why would you want the radiator directly behind the front tire???

It's a good thing no one else does, oh wait, everyone else does and it doesn't seem to be a problem.

Side mounted radiators don't seem to be a problem either.

It's not a big problem . . . but then neither would be a 234# gal on the back seat.

The radiator is the center is not a very good design and was borne, likely, simply of someone's quest for symmetry.

The air behind the front tire is turbulent and the thermal dynamics have got to be better splitting the radiators.

"Everybody" had spark advance on the steering column for 20 years and swore by it . . . .

You'll hear some whining about it but that whining will likely came from the same folks who laughed at the underslung muffler in 1987 . . . . yeah, the muffler they are all racing to emulate.

What part of "...I think he probably picked up a stone and holed the radiator..." isn't a problem.

Stone knives and axes were state of the art for thousands of years, then somebody decided there was a better technology even if it "looked wrong".

About a K, sounds about right for two rads, hardware and plastic. Heck a good muffler is a K.

I wonder what happens to the reservoir bottle under the right pod? I would assume this system does away with it and does not have an overflow/reservoir.

Court, Greg you do realize Buell is not the first to have side mounted radiators. Other bikes sure seem to do okay with their front mounted radiators.

"Court, Greg you do realize Buell is not the first to have side mounted radiators. Other bikes sure seem to do okay with their front mounted radiators."

If throwing a stone up from the front tire and holing the radiator is "okay", that's a great position to take.

Your repeated posts aimed at belittling Buell are becoming tiresome. Why are you here?

I have one for you. You do realize that this is a Buell enthusiasts' discussion board where enthusiasm for the brand is perfectly acceptable.

I'm still waiting for you to answer Greg's question, "What part of '...I think he probably picked up a stone and holed the radiator...' isn't a problem."

I think the answer to the original question of this thread is apparently, "no". However, Danny Eslick's Daytona H-D/Buell, Richie Morris Racing Geico Buell 1125R was sporting some interesting heat exchanger nacelles and there are photos of it to be found on the board here.

I'm really amused that some of you think a cooling system suitable for racing is a good idea for a "street machine".

How much "stop and go" did Danny have to do at Fontana?
Who pays for the radiator and other damage the pods would prevent in the event of a spill?

The pods are my friends - I have ridden pretty much thru the Winter and my legs stay warm(ish) thanks to the wind-blocking pods.

To each his/her own...

Here are the pods that Mikellyjo referenced above. According to the manufacturer, the bike runs 20º cooler and develops 5 more hp.

aa

I like the look of them better than the stock pods, which, I must admit, I am having a hard time getting used to.

Of course as a designer myself, I just can't leave well enough alone, so I made this photoshop which shows the pods rotated 15º or so to make the edges of the radiator line up with the frame and forks.

It looks a bit more integrated to me, but of course, I don't know if there would be any practical problems, as I do not have an actual bike to look at.

>>>Other bikes sure seem to do okay with their front mounted radiators.

You are absolutely correct but it is a less than optimum position that was chosen through a series of compromises. The "other bikes" do "okay" with their high, heavy exhaust systems mounted 42" aft of CG as well but it's engineering borne of putting it in the space available rather than finding the BEST place. This is the reason other firms are emulating Buell.

Ditto the perimeter brake. Buell was not the first to do it either . . . just the first to do it right by integrating the design of the wheel and brake as one. Prior attempts failed to see the wheel as part of the equation and hung the perimeter brake on a heavy conventional wheel.

The one word of your post that really gets my hackles up is "okay". If I told Erik Buell I was going to do something "okay", be it guitar, motorcycle, school family or work . . . he'd throw a fit.

Buell has always been about striving to do the best they can. The entire concept of "okay" and "like all the others" is unacceptable.

Go be as "okay" as you please . . . but don't saddle me with your mediocrity.

" If throwing a stone up from the front tire and holing the radiator "

WOW that's a very large stone with a extremely big angular velocity.

"Ditto the perimeter brake. Buell was not the first to do it either . . . just the first to do it right"

define "right" for me.

if it means with an acceptable amount of torsional pull under hard breaking is "OK", then I agree. I will accept that it has little impact on the stability of the bike given the "NORMAL FORCE" is constant, once it is reduced or oscillated it gets a little scary.

I like the pods, I really like the redesigned ones also. I think Buell has taken a great approach to design, function, style, ingenuity, and so on. I don't think I could spend my $ on anything else period.
