This may be stupid, but I just want to make sure about the front forks pre-load setting. I have an 05 XB12Scg, and it says to adjust the preload to the number of lines showing. For my weight I need to go to 5 lines of pre-load. Right now there are 4 lines fully showing, and then the 5th line is right at the larger looking nut that is the top of the shock. Is my front pre-load at set at 4, or is it already at 5 (which is where i need to go)? Thanks! |

if you can see the line then it is at 5 |

Thanks dongalonga, I was not sure. The 5th line is just barely visible, and then there are 4 lines that are all the way showing. |

Most important thing is that both sides are equal, then you can adjust to suit your riding. |

Thanks again dongalonga, that is what I figured but I wasnt positive. Jraice please stop posting just to post, I did not ask that question and I already knew that, its just common sense. I get you are trying to help but every time I come on this forum to look around, your name has been there on almost every thread. Take a rest and go ride. |

Whatever... I was trying to be helpful. By you saying that for your weight you need five turns is pretty clearly saying your trying to go by the manual... I believe what I said has some relevance but bash away if you disagree. |

I wasn't bashing you Jraice. I know you were trying to be helpful, which I even stated. I simply was just trying to verify that I had it correct, and that it wasn't 5 lines up from the nut. All of my previous bikes and dirtbikes did not have preload that was visible from the outside like my XB does. I can read the chart just fine brumbear but thanks anyways. And as far as being helpful, the only person that was helpful here was dongalonga, the rest of you are just wasting your time and the others that may read this. But like I said, thanks for you help anyways. I didn't think any of you would get that offended by it. (Message edited by oxygen151 on April 01, 2009) |

I think that most will think twice before attempting to give you any advice in the future. Do you know that "you should never look a gift horse in the mouth" They offered to help and it cost you nothing. If I were in that situation. I would simply say "thank you" |

No worries... And I think telling me not to post and that you are annoyed by my posts is bashing... If somebody else had said what I said I dont think you wouldve said the same thing to them, that it was common sense so thus I am assuming you said what you said to me, not my response. Anyways... No harm done, good luck with your suspension setup. |

I was wondering.... since jap bikes are now making each individual fork do a separate job (one fork takes care of rebound, and the other compression). What will happen if you put one preload adjustment at 7 and the other at 5? Im guessing that it would be like corn starch & water as seen on mythbusters, if you get what im saying about that relation hypothetically a good setup to try out? |

Hmmm I am not sure... I know some harleys do something similar (they have a cartridge emulator in only one fork) but I am not sure if it would work better on the buell... I know the manual says to keep them equal with a safety warning but it says a lot of things based more on liability then reality. The ideal situation would be to have the fork legs just move up and down freely and use a single shock for suspension... To bad Cysz got that all patented away . |

Jraice got three more posts. HaHa, and now I got one too... but there's no count anywhere so we can't tell who's winning. |

The count is in the profile page Iamarchangel - 532 posts. Jraice - 292 posts. You should maintain your lead for a few more days! |

Not that this has any relevance to this thread, but having both legs set equally is bunk. Its generally a good idea, but no disastrous result if they're not identical. I have a 1990 BMW K75S that has a fork spring in only one leg, and all the damping internals in the other. It was designed that way, and worked wonderfully. On a well-designed front end, one leg cannot operate independently of the other. Its impossible. Looks like I got myself one more post too. This is kinda cool. Doubt if I'll ever catch up with Jraice, but... |

I have to agree with Nuerburgringer. I've had down hill mountain bikes with very good forks. Some have the spring in one leg and all the dampening in the other. A slight variation in preload is not going to make a hill of beans. But, I don't see any benefit to adjusting the two sides differently and it will make any notes you take a nightmare to keep track of. The asymmetry would drive me bonkers too. I'm losing at 76 posts. |

The manual has an answer to the question about different preload settings on each side. "Both forks should display the same number of alignment lines. Forks that are not properly aligned can lead to loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury." Yikes!!!! Of course it says that about practically everything about the bike. Hello everyone! I have a question about suspension also. I have an xbsl but my service manual only has the chart for the regular xb, not the low version. Can someone post the chart for the 03 low version? I lost my owners manual years ago!! Thanks in advance to anyone who can help! Mickey |

V8 basil, make an owners account on Buell's website and you can access the owners manuals for the bikes. They only go back to 2005, but the suspension should be the same for the 05 low or scg and your 03. |
