Planning on taking the Strada's off my XT and getting something a little more off-the-tarvy friendly. Not going single track or stump jumping/rock hopping. Dug through the search a bit, but didn't find anything on this. Question is, are the Dunlop's really that bad of a road tire and are the Syncs a better dual purpose tire even though the carcass is a bit thin? I'm guessing that Buell discontinued the Dunlops in favor of the Pirelli's for a reason other than $$ (yes, I'm naive). |

Syncs. The 616's suck. |

Syncs The Dunflops are garbage. The Syncs last longer, grip better in most conditions, don't cause the nasty headshake, and are made by Pirelli. The Dunflops are *slightly* better off road, not enough to justify getting them. (Message edited by froggy on March 31, 2009) |

I can't comment on the Syncs because I've never had them on my motorcycle before. I'm very happy with the performance and the mileage that I get from my Dunlop D616. I change my rear tire every 10,000 miles when I get my Uly serviced an I changed my front tire at the 20,000 service. I don't think anyone is getting that kind of mileage out of their Syncs. And Dunlop is an AMERICAN made tire. I prefer buying American made products! |

The Dunlop front made some XB12X models behave badly. Wandering and a weaving in a straight line. Rear good. Front proved faulty on my bike. (Message edited by danger_dave on March 31, 2009) |

I found the dunlops 616's to be pretty good in the dirt but made the bike weave in the street. I ran 2 rears which barely lasted 7000 miles each. They were bald by then. Then I switched to Dunlop D-220 sport touring tires. The bike handles much nicer in the street and they seem to be wearing slowly after 2000 miles (The 616's showed a lot of wear by 2000 miles). The dirt performance of the D220s are okay but I might try Avon Distanzas next time. |

My Uly came with Dunlop 616's on. I found them OK on the road, (I don't take my Uly on the dirt). I only had 1/8" chicken strips left, but they still squared off and were toast by 4000 miles. I never suffered the head shake that some guys appear to have suffered and I thought they were "okish" apart from what I mentioned above. I fitted Michelin Pilot Road 2CT's at 4k miles and I have done another 4k miles on them through the winter here. They are nice and stable and show no signs of squaring off and I'd guess they are about half worn now. I really rate these tyres! |

You might as well get a set of 616s and see how you like them. They have their good as well as bad points. Since you know they can induce handling problems, if you experience any, you'll know it's the tires and not something broken on the bike. Do not push the mileage on the front 616. It will cup long before it gets to the wear bars, and that's when the handling will just fall apart. |

My '06 Uly came with 616s from the factory. They worked well for me even at speeds over 100 MPH. (Coming back from Daytona in '06, I was running up I-95 with a Duc, and we flew through Georgia) I never got the weave that others experienced, nor any other untoward behavior. My only complaint was that they didn't last as long as I would have liked. There are a few of us who liked the Dunlops, but there are a lot more who are quite vocal in their displeasure. Now, the Avon Azaros that I replaced the 616s with really sucked; but that's a different story. |

I do a lot of dirt and mud, and I love my 616s...but 10k out of a rear? HUH??? Damn man, I've got 4600 on mine and it's well into the wear bars. Until something pops up with as much dirt capability in the right size, I'll stick with the 616. I run PR2s on my S2 and while they're great on the slab, there's no way in hell I'd take them on anything more gnarly than a grassy field. In an emergency. Someday I'll find some spare XB wheels for a set of PR2s for slabbing.... |

No complaints with the Dunlops (on my Uly), except the front is now badly cupped at 7000 miles, and feels funny handling-wise. Other than that they were decent tires when fresh. The dunlops on my 12R, well that's another story. |

12K rear, 18K front, and I don't ride like grandma. For what its worth, both my 616's were shot at about 5k. |

Thanks everyone for the timely info. Going with the Syncs. By the time I get finished screwing around with my XT, it's going to end up looking like a Low Rider X. |

"12K rear, 18K front, and I don't ride like grandma. For what its worth, both my 616's were shot at about 5k." I don't know how grandma rides because she's never been able to keep-up with me! I rode my Uly to homecoming this last year with 19,500 miles on it and it had about 9,500 miles on the rear and the front was the original tire. I showed them to several people there and they were surprised how good shape the tires were in with that kind of mileage. I could have go another couple of thousand miles out of them but since I had the bike in for the 20,000 mile service and had already purchased another set of Dunlops D616's, I just had the shop change-out the tires while it was there. |

Froggy, I thought you said that the SS and the X had the same suspensions? Remember on another tread I was complaining how the SS gave me leg cramps when I test rode one at homecoming last year. you said that only the placement of the riding pegs was different. Please explain. Don |

I run the 616 in the rear for off pavement traction, the Sync in the front to elminate the weave, and the bike rides fine. |

For fast twisty stuff, slabbing two up I did not like the 616. If I were inclined to be on a lot of dirt roads that is what I would run though. I ran several sets of Syncs on both of my Buells, but I have found the Michelin PR2 to be my tire of preference for all but wet grass and any mud. The D616 rear went 6,000 miles and was cupped for its last 1,500. All but one of the Syncs went 6,000 and wore as ridden. The PR2 is at near 9,000 and still going with no give up in contour for doing twistys. |

I am looking up that post to see my exact wording, but I believe I was referring to the ergonomics? (Assuming we are talking about the same post?) The suspensions are similar, the (pre-09)SS is the shortest, the STT and XT are almost the same (I need to get them side by side for some real world compos), then the XT is a few inches taller. Ergonomics, the SS and STT are the same. The Uly's have different footpeg brackets that lower the pegs a bit, and more upright bars. |

The SS is too low, plus the stupidly low Uly foot pegs are hindering cornering clearance. I had a 06 X, its too high. My Goldilocks opinion is the XT or STT setup is the best. Also, if my feet dangle they drag on the road, STT/XT should be just about perfect. I love the look I get from cagers when I lock my throttle and just dangle like a corpse. |

I had a 06 X riiighhttt...I knew there was one in your past. I was confused and thought you changed suspension from X to SS. That's what I'm interested in...I think. |

There is no offroad tire for this bike! So, why even debate it? The best tire is the cheapest tire, since charging $130+ for any tire that only gets 6000 miles is criminal! I'm running a Dunlop D205 that I paid $78 for. Now that's the only way to go! And, if you cut a groove across the middle, it looks just like a Sync!!!!! |

You are correct about no off-road tires currently available for the Uly. What I'm looking for is a better tire for riding dirt & gravel roads than the Stradas. The Syncs are W rated and will do unpaved roads. The Stradas are W rated and are for paved roads - I've had them out on dirt/gravel and it's not a good feeling. Front and rear Syncs from Dennis Kirk are $277.00 delivered. When it comes to tires, I'll buy the best that I can get for the purpose intended - there's very little forgiveness on two wheels at 80 mph or on gravel at 40. Suit yourself. |

I've only run the Syncs in the front, but I have had D616s on the back. Like the one I just put on Saturday. D616 rears for $40 less than a Pirelli Sync is a decent motivator. They don't last quite as long for me, but at that price...... |

there are several riders that are using the Dunlop's "Road Smarts" on their bikes and like them for the handling and long distance mileage they are getting out of their tires. there are many different brands and styles of tires available for different types of riders, but my 2006 Uly came with the Dunlop D616 and I haven't found any reason to change to another brand yet. To each, his own! |

If I recall, there were some pretty good reports on the Avon Storms... I love those tires on my BMW RT. (For the record, I'm usng syncs on my Uly though). As far as off-road tire, I'm getting ready to put on some Pirelli MT60's based on recommendations from a Uly rider on ADV. Wayne |

+1 to Jlnance and Florida_lime: Sync in front and D616 in the back. The D616 front did a little swimming in its prime, but when it wore down it went like *THAT* - handling went to hell...it felt like it had right angle edges when I turned into a corner. Like, "CLUNK", just took a curve. "CLUNK", just took another curve. The new combo is nice, but I'm sure I'll experiment with a Sync rear when it's time. |
