Just had my new/used cylinders honed by my local harley dealer. The service manual specifies a "precise 60 degree" cross hatch pattern, i think mine looks closer to 30 degrees. Anyone know just how critical that this measurement actually is? Is it important enough to take them back and have them re-done? | ||

Just to be clear, what is your reference for gaging the angle? I mean what angle exactly are you referring to, the one formed by opposing cross hatching, or are you looking at the cross hatching with respect to the top/deck of the cylinder? If you see 30 degrees wrt the top of the cylinder, then you have a 60 degree cross hatch.  | ||

Exactly what I was thinking . . . complementary angles.  Is it 40o or 50o? Pammy? . . where's Pammy. .. she'd know right off the bat. | ||

Frankly, I don't know what the heck I'm talking about. Pictures are good. What I think a 60 deg cross hatch is...  But maybe it's...  Google isn't much help, lots of conflicting information. Agrees with my first sketch above. Seems to agree with second sketch, but kind of suspect Says that the angle is "referenced to the top of the deck" Agrees with first sketch
Yeah, we need Pammy. Or I could just keep editing until I stumble onto the correct answer. Neither of my service manuals depicts the angle in question. (Message edited by Blake on March 29, 2009) | ||

The hone marks should intersect at 40 to 60 degrees. Our honing machine is set to a certain RPM and strokes per minute to get the proper cross hatch. |
