I'd be really curious to get a distinct chronology of the evolution of the tube frame Lightning models. Options (wheels), Special Editions (S1WL, Millenium X1, etc), paint schemes available... I need education... -Saro |

'Molten Orange (Only color that came with nuk blue frame and wheels)' I'm fairly confident all paint colors could get the nuclear blue frame and wheels.... DAve |

Cool Spidey! More questions... What major (and minor ) components / subassemblies changed? How about compatibility? Things like forks, swingarms, shocks (man, the recall thing must really cloud that one!), and maybe even some specs like sprocket ratios, etc... I'm not even sure why I'm curious - but true to the rest of my life, I like more data than I can use... -Saro |

You forgot two, no make that three options for '99 and '00. I believe the Carbon Fiber Extreme was in '99 with nuke blue frame and whatever wheel option, the '99 Blue Streak with race stripe, black frame, PM or black wheels, (best looking X1 if I do say so myself) and the '00 Red with race stripe, I believe they had white frames and white or PM wheel options. Oh yeah, make that four, the Millenium edition was in there too. |

It is listed that The 98S1W Molten Orange is the only bike to come with nuke blue frame and wheels now that might not be totally true IE you can always change body work and wheels but from the factory, that was what was stated. Changes per Peter's request. 1997 Recall on all Swing arms. 1998 Introduction of of S1W with 101 thunderstorm engine and 5 Gallon Mantaray tank. Recall on all Tanks for decals that bubble and lift. 1999 All suspension changed to Showa from the current WP Brakes also changed from PM caliper front and I am not sure if it was a berembo rear or not. To Nissin calipers (front and rear) and DOT 5 Master cylinders. Also the new Aluminum swing arm instead of the old Box steal. Fuel Injection. Complete Frame change. New aluminum Tail section. Wider seat (13 inches) 2000 Master cylinders changed to DOT 4 Tail section no longer clear coated. And spring loaded foot pegs added. New Program in ECM. Fuel filter update ( Recall) 2001 Molded in color body work Shock Update (Recall) and front muffler mount update 2002 New tank decals introduced to a 2D sticker. Forks will switch no problem Rear shocks if you have all the right Mounting hardware IE a WP rear shock will work if you have the old mount. Swing arm yes If you want a steel one on our X1 it will fit and if you want an aluminum one on your S1W it will fit too. Sproket specs I'm not diggin that deep I'm sure I missed a few things but ask Away and I shall remember and/or find out. And yes I did forget the special editions I am sorry. You are correct on all the years and models. |

Spidey, You have just been awarded the S1 Knowledge Award. If you know as much about the other bikes as you do the S1 then your dealership is lucky to have you and you should be training the other dealers employees on Buell Knowledge. And Dave calls himself the Master of the Buell Universe. hehehe Good Work. |

Most excellent Spidey-dude but you left out my beloved X1 Millenium edition which came in all silver/ jethot silver ceramic headers/ chrome mesh inserts in the tailpiece (which is clearcoated) and silver crankcase and jugs--a limited run of 850 of which 400 were released to the US of A, 375 to the World (and 75 who knows?--trivia question of the night!) and, in my humble opinion, the best looking X1 of the lot...oh yeah raised molten orange tank lettering proclaming it the "Millenium X1", as well as a decal on the fairing ditto, and a laser engraved gas cap ditto with "# of 850 Limited Edition" on it. Not really much to get excited about, I know, unless you own one, and then of course you might be posting all this useless BS And let us not forget the Red Stripe release of the same year (2000) of which I think only 400 were made--I think the Blue stripe is way nicer, though--red with white stripes look best on Austin Mini Cooper S's |

Wow! Nice run down Spidey...lots of accurate information there and I think you've captured more than I knew. The 98S1W was available in four frame colors and four body colors...mixed in all four combos. I have an factory original Billet and Nuclear Blue 98 S1W. http://www.dcbrag.org/S1WDAve.htm Perhaps a VIN can even verify color? I understand that in the UK and Europe, the "White Lightning" was the white frame & white body combo 98S1W only. The other color combos for the Thunderstormed S1 engines were called 'Strikers' (Strykers ?) Perhaps some of our European Buellers can assist? DAve |

Things I would add to the S1 changes, I don't know so much about X1s: Frame change in 98- thicker down tubes for front heim joint support Change in the Swingarm pivot bearing preload adjustment Brakes completely changed in 98 from cast iron to stainless rotors, PM to Nissin calipers Airbox and fender material/finish changes...I think the airbox size also changed from 96 to 97, not sure. Oil pump change in 98 I think the swingarm carrier support/front sprocket cover changed casting in 97, possibly from sand cast to die cast. Already covered the Thunderstorm and header collector 2" to 2.5" additions by mentioning the 101 HP engine. Non S1 changes I know about are: Big frame change in 1999, added extra brace to front heim mount support, added extra top heim joint, and changed header routing major swingarm change to cast aluminum in 99 Oil pump/passage changes in 2000 15% lighter flywheels in 2000 front rotor carrier change in 2000 Dot 5 to Dot 4 brake fluid change in 2000 Spring loaded footpegs in 2000 Improved shifter mechanism in 2001 Missed a few I'm sure.... |

I think one thing was missed...revised cases and crankshaft bearings for 2000. Oh...and better controls in '99 I'm sure there's a lot more! |

Trans gear ratio changed in 2000. Spidey, I don't know if all of them were clear coated but I spent a couple of hours stripping the clear coat off a 2000 subframe and polishing it. There's more but my memory is not as good as Spidey's right now. Greg |

JD, Nope, the Red Racing stripe's frame was in black. In the States apparently the wheels were in white -the cast ones-, and in Europe the polished PM's? 700-800 were made-or so it says on my tank. Guy I know has no. 69. That made him buy it right away... |

Buell of Toronto has a nice website featuring all the Buell models from 1998 to 2003. |

There is one item I have not seen mentioned, early 1996 S1 models had a hand laid fiberglass tail section, fly screen, front fender and pulley cover. Thicker nylon was used for these parts after '96. Also the rear fender was thick and heavy and painted black in '96 while '97 and '98 models had the thinner, lighter CF version. |

Jose, If you ever in Toronto drop by that shop, real nice spot and it appears to be well stocked with Buell Parts. This past year when I was in Toronto on business I purchased a number of parts for my 98S1 and the service people answered a lot of my questions. Thats where I actually heard other Buells and was finally put at ease with the valve train noise. Another good shop here in Canada is the one in Kingston, Ontario and the business manager there races a S1 in the Canadian Thunder Series. Once again a very knowledgeable shop. Kingston Buell |
