I am doing some research and I thought the S2 muffler had a design name but I can not find it in any of my literature. Does anyone have the name of it? Frank |

Frank, All the term I have ever seen on the S2 was "Free Breathing" applied to the intake and exhaust. Now the newer tubers with the bread box had the Helmholtz Volume Power System (HVPS), but I think that really only applied to the intake side. Where's Dave and Court when you need them??? |

Thanks Loren, it may not have a name but it seemed to me it did, I went through all my sales literature, Court and Daves book and the BadWeb and found nothing. Memory is the second thing to go, I can't remember what the first is! |

You are both right . . . . the S2 had a lot of reference to "Free Breathing" in the literature. There were the "original" dash medallions that had the Harley-Davidson on them and they were all confiscated. (well . . . MOST of them. ) and replaced with the 1203cc Free Breathing ones. By 1998 the one I have stuck here on my speakers appeared and it said HVPS1203. . . . making reference to the Helmholz Power Volume System. I've got some of them floating around somewhere. |

Ugly can = perhaps the best muffler put on the bike. Try as they may . . . most the aftermarket made only more noise. It was an elegant, if ugly, design. |

I never thought of that exhaust as ugly. I am impressed with the performance of it as well. I must admit I like a little more sound (I have the race exhaust on the S2-T and stocker on the S2). My seat of the pants experiments tell me the race exhaust makes up on the top end what it looses on the bottom end. If I was to just run around town I would choose the stocker. |

I LOVED the look of the stock can on my old S2. Didn't care for the V&H on my buddy's. |

Jon, I still have the stocker! When I switched to the race header on mine, I had to modify a V&H to work. Brad |

I went back to stock today from a V&H SS2R (was on the bike when I bought it). I made a couple of updates with the newer front and rear hangers. The rear needed a little grinding on the lower right hand side to clear the muffler so the bolt holes would line up. Clearance to the rear tire is slim, but that's how it seemed to fit. I like the sound and lack of noise.

Looks great Loren. Have you noticed a difference in performance? |

It will be a few days before I have it on the road. We had lots of freezing rain, sleet, and snow over the last 24 hrs. I need to check the carb and see what jets are in it. I thought about just putting in a new set of plugs and taking it out for a ride and then checking them...Maybe a quicker route??? I really don't expect any drop in performance and maybe even a little pick up in the lower end plus it will be "quiet". |

I have the supertrapp on mine. I did pick up a stock muffler on ebay a while back. thinking of putting it on. We will see. REX |

The snow has melted off and I took the S2 for a spin around town tonight. WOW! It's real quiet now with ear plugs in (I always wear them). It sounds good, just not loud, and I don't think it has lost any power compared to the V&H that was on it. I like it!! |

Glad to hear your positive report Loren. My stock muffler should be here in a few days. I'm replacing a Vance & Hines as well. Thanks for the info. |

It looks to me like that oe silencer might be better mounted on the outside of the Z-bracket. Mine uses the oe straps and the outlet has plenty of clearance to the rear wheel. The closest part to the wheel is the back of the silencer itself but there is no evidence of contact.
I'd post a better picture but I currently have a V&H fitted. I find the aftermarket pipes pull a little better from very low revs but there's not much between them the rest of the time. I think a quiet pipe suits the S2Ts character better too. The main reason I use the V&H is to protect the original pipe against our climate and for the annual MOT test when noisy pipe friendly testers become a thing of the past!!! Nice bike by the way ! |

I love the factory mufflers. Buell does one hell of a job on their exhaust systems - take the 1125 for example. NObody has been able to come up with one yet that doesn't have a huge hole in the powerband somewhere. They may be big n' "ugly"...but they WORK. Maybe one day I'll find a stocker for my S2. Right now I've got a Buell race can adapted onto the stock header, and I LOVE it. I also finally found a Buell race header/muffler for my S1W, allowing me to replace the V&H. What a difference that made, I couldn't believe just changing a header and muffler could make THAT big a difference. Wow. Now Frank, you might be able to tell me - where was I looking that I saw a stainless (not painted) S2 muffler? Was that incorrectly identified, or did some come that way? |

I do not think any came that way. It would be easy to strip the paint and polish them. The race muffler was stainless. Perhaps you saw a prototype or a pre- production S2. |

I'm not sure if there were any proto stainless units. Brankin or Gary V would know. |

It wasn't on a bike. I thought at first it was an S1W muffler because it was stainless, but the guy said it had a 2" inlet. It also looked like it didn't have the elbow...and I thought everything post-S2 had the elbow on the muffler, not on the header. Or did some early S3's still have the S2 style header with the elbow, and rear-facing collector? |

The '97 & '98 S3's had a stainless muffler. I bought one off ebay for $10 to put on my '02 S3. It does have the elbow up front. I installed the Z bracket to the "outside" because everything seemed to fit best that way. The muffler was in a nice unloaded state in that location. To move it to the opposite side of the Z bracket, the muffler would have to been preloaded a bit outward. I felt like that would be asking for broken exhaust studs or some fatigue cracking someplace in the assembly. |

I always loosen EVERYthing - all the way to the nuts at the exhaust ports - when I'm changing mufflers. I snug everything together so it's a "system" instead of "a bunch of pieces", then start torquing at the ports and work my way to the rear muffler hangar. <nok, nok> Haven't had any break yet |

Joe, if nothing is breaking you are doing it wrong! Actually I do it the same way. The only one I have to man handle is the S1W which I will be doing again today to replace seals. I may polish the pipes as well. |

On the subject of stainless exhausts..... I have (or have had in the past) stainless Buell mufflers with both 2" and 2.5" inlets. The 2" one came from a Euro model S3 and went with my X1 when I sold it. The 2.5" one is sitting on a shelf waiting for me to correct that foolish error! They both had a front elbow. I'm pretty sure there are no stainless S2 exhausts. I would love to fit the one I have to my S2 but that would require a later header pipe which would in turn require a non standard air filter. It may be daft but I'm rather attached to my green carbon fibre! |
