OK folks. I LOVE to eat. I LOVE to eat fattening stuff. But I went to the doctor for a sinus infection about a week ago and she said I needed to lose weight. I said I needed a new doctor. I guess I really have to do something this time. I am dreading this, can you tell? Without reading the thousands of posts in this thread already, I would be happy to hear about any diet aid that has been successful for you guys. I HAVE to drink more water, I know that. And I HAVE to eat less, I know that as well. What I am asking is if there have been any appetite suppressants, fat blockers, carb blockers, etc, that aren't just snake oil. Oh, and that don't make you jittery. I don't like jittery. For accountability, I'll weigh in the morning and post the embarrassing results. Man I hate this. Did I say that already? I'm hungry, what's for lunch? (Message edited by DynaSport on March 26, 2009) |

here is a pill I use that helps, but it is more of a supliment, you will need to exercise for it to work. It may make you jittery at first if you are not used to caffeine as it has some in it but I don't normaly injest caffeine and it doesn't make me jittery at all http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=281 5053 But you need to work out, just taking the pills will not do anything! a few things I do *No pop/soda (not even diet) *Drink water like it is going out of style *Breakfast, it is the most important meal of the day, gives you a boost and helps kick start the metobolic rate *At lunch (durring weekdays) I go to the gym, drink a protien shake have a piece of fruit *Normal dinner I am sure others will chime in with what works for them, I know a few guys did the deal a meal thing through the mail where they send you the food |

Eat what you like, but less of it. Have an active lifestyle. Ride a naked bike (not the other way round). Works for me, I'll be 50 this year & still look like a god. |

I have been hitting the gym pretty regularly, but for me that does not translate into lost weight. I lift a bit and gym time just makes me hungrier so I end up eating more. With me, it all boils down to eating too much. I have a pretty active lifestyle. |

After talking to my doctor, I avoid taking supplements in general (not multivitamins) as they can be detrimental to you kidneys. Concentrated things like whey or soy protein are fine (low fat protein!) are fine, but chemicals like creatine, testosterone, etc can really work your kidneys and generally make no difference in your recovery time, etc. I know Badlionsfan has lost 120 pounds in a year on Nutrisystem. I’ve been on it for less than a month and have lost about 10 pounds since I started it, but it honestly hasn’t really impressed me. I feel that with wise food choices you can accomplish the same thing with more freedom and no 300 a month bill. -You really want to avoid empty calories like the plague. I mean things with no nutritional value at all, chips, Doritos, beer, regular soda, etc. -Identify when you tend to overeat and stop. I’m a late night eater and can destroy a bag of chips without even noticing it until I’m shaking the crumbs into my hand. -Write down everything you eat and how much. You’ll quickly identify where you’re overeating AND the act of writing it down takes conscious thought that will usually have you re-examining your food choices. -Eat moderately sized entres with lots of veggies to fill you up and keep you full at larger meals. You’ll want to eat 5 or 6 times a day to keep your metabolism going. A decent breakfast to include carbs and protein. Cereal and whole wheat toast works well. Midmorning snack with a fruit and some protein or dairy. Responsible lunch with veggies and/or fruit, dairy or protein. Mid afternoon snack. Responsible dinner with veggies/salad, etc. I space my meals out through the day, cereal for breakfast, toast after the gym, apple a few hours later, glass of skim after that then lunch. I’ll space my lunch out over a few hours: sandwich now. Wait a few hours and have a few cups of steamed broccoli. If you constantly have food in you, you’ll never get hungry. -Only eat at a table if you can help it. If you make it a habit to only eat sitting at a table, you won’t snack in your car, in front of the TV, etc. -Weight lifting won’t generally help you lose weight. You’re ADDING weight by getting larger muscles. You do increase your metabolism as it takes more energy to support the added muscle mass. I’ve found it ends up being a wash for a first few months. |

Dynasport-- Don't waste your time trying to lose weight. Do I have your attention now? If you're doing it cuz you think you have to, you will fail. You have to want to do it. You need to find something to motivate you to want to do it. Doing it because someone else said you should ain't gonna cut it. Once you find that motivation, you need to get real with yourself. No pill or potion is gonna make you lose weight and more importantly keep it off. The only way to lose weight is to take in less than your body needs, then it will start to burn off what you've been storing for years. It takes a life style change to keep it off. I've lost 132 pounds now in less than a year, using the Nutrisystem plan to learn the new way of life that has not only helped me lose the weight, but keep it off. I'm sure there are other plans that you can follow that works, but NS works for me. The reason Thumper hasn't seen the early success that I did is because he hasn't stuck to the plan solidly, which is critical for the first few months to establish a new mindset about eating and food. Take it for what it's worth. Here's my little chart to show you what you can do IF you actually WANT TO. (Message edited by badlionsfan on March 26, 2009) |

Ya notice the key work Thump uses? Responsible. Now who can reach 51 years old and still be responsible. I had enough of that when I was in my thirties and forties. My kids are grown and I ride a Buell for cripe's sake. This Dr's Weight Loss Clinic has been working very well for my wife and son. In less than a year they have lost nearly a hundred pounds combined. I just started and have found the suppressant pills really work. I am not hungry and they leave me very thirsty for water. I haven't gone anywhere without a 20 oz bottle in my hand.(even on the bike) They shoot you up with B12 and a complement of other vitamins and healthy stuff, give you a daily vitamin supplement, measure your fat content and such and have a weekly weigh in, and monitor your overall health. I'm hoping with this program I won't be so full of crap! |

Well I weighed in at 241.5 this morning. Gotta start somewhere. The frustrating thing for me is that I have done this twice before. I lost significant weight both times. Once on Jenny Craig and once on Weightwatchers. Gained back over time both times. I'm up for another shot at it. Let's see where I am next week. I am approaching this kind of like a 12 step program - a day at a time. Time for lunch. I'm having soup. Yea soup. |

I’m not saying that Nutrisystem doesn’t work, but for me, it’s a conflict of interest. If I were single, I’d be kicking ass at it, but I’m not. I have a wife and a son so every meal is three separate meals being prepared. I find it very easy to stick to at work when I have structure. At home, it’s not so easy. I’m not convinced that Nutrisystem is anything special in terms of nutrients, etc. With the Men’s Nutrisystem plan, it’s about 1500 calories a day. At 1500 calories a day, you don’t have a choice but to lose weight. The plan is really well designed though with proper eating habits, you aren’t hungry. The only issue I have with the plan is that one of the Nutritionists flat out told me that there isn’t enough calories in the plan to support a daily, vigorous exercise and recommended an additional 400 calories a day for me… I’m going to take a month off and get back with it. I’m convinced it works, it’s just not working out for me due to my personal life. I’m going to implement the good habits I’ve learned with Nutrisystem and see if they’ll work without their food as an experiment. Bad is right though, losing weight because your doc told you to isn't likely to be a motivator. YOU need to want it. Remember, there are no silver bullets or magic pills. Nothing worth having comes easy. |

Dyna: I am in the SAME boat. I've peeled off 25# a couple times in the past and it just wasn't that tough. But I've really been fighting it this winter and put it all back on. The part that pisses me off is that my blood pressure, cholesterol, and everything else is absolutely off the charts good. I still have no problem running 5 miles at a crack and I don't want to keep adding it and get sedentary. Frankly, I saw what happened to my Dad who was also a real athletic guy and I'd prefer to be healthy in my 50's and 60's. It ticks me off because I had the will power to quit drinking when I was piloting all the time and never got back in the habit . . . . smoked a lot for years and just up and quit no problem but I live in the midst of great cooks and great food . . . I have two motivators . . . one is I've watched what weight and smoking do to folks. Vickie's Dad, who started smoking on the boat from Italy at age 6, lived to 88 but man I saw the hell he lived through the last two years. Never. The other one for me, frankly, is riding. I just feel like a pig pumped in an Aerostich when I put weight on. Of course . . . . we're having the grand opening of our new pizza place tonight . . perhaps I should invest in Jenny Craig franchises and not pizza.

Wolf hasn't left us, he is a little tense about how his addiction to bacon, caffeine with sugar energy drinks, and lack of exercise, have derailed an otherwise great health program. But then, his prime motivation was to race. He did that, now he's back to humping the couch! I hope he isn't too touchy about this topic. |

This may be a bit late but better late then never. I would like to share my fitness endeavor in hopes of inspiring anyone who is thinking of getting in shape. On September 26, 2007 I was sitting in my doctors office getting lectured about my overall well being. He handed me a prescription for cholesterol control medicine and advised me to think about my health. I was overweight, my cholesterol was well above healthy limits, I felt like shit every day I would come home and drink beer to ease the pains. My blood work revealed that I was borderline diabetic and if I didn't make drastic changes I would not only further jeopardize my health but become dependent on a barrage of medication which I would have to take daily. Knowing what my parents go through each and every day and seeing the amounts of pills they take to make it through the day I decided I didn't want to follow their paths. I looked at myself in the mirror and the next day, September 27th I decided to make a permanent change. Weighing in at 206lbs, sporting a pudgy 36 inch waist, I embarked on one of the most life changing experiences ever. This was me on the first day of my fitness transformation: Over the next several months I carefully recorded "EVERYTHING" I put in my mouth in a spreadsheet counting every gram of protein, carb and fat. I joined the gym and worked out faithfully 6 times per week. Below are photos that I took on the 27th of each month to track my progress visually: Since the day I started I lost 50 lbs of fat, I am no longer on cholesterol medication and I feel great. I would not be exaggerating to say that today I am in the best shape of my life. I owe a lot to many individuals at www.johnstonefitness.com They are a group of great people who enjoy helping and guiding folks like me in meeting and exceeding individual fitness goals. I keep a fitness journal on JSF and if you would like to know more details about my transformation feel free to do so by following this link: My NO EXCUSES journal Thanks for reading and I hope I have inspired you to make a change not only for yourself but for your loved ones as well. If you have any questions feel free to ask here or shoot me a PM. Pete |
