I am looking for info on Supertrapp mufflers for my 2000 X-1.I have the chance to pick-up a new old stock muffler for a very good price.I am not looking to re program the ECM at least not right now.Has anyone changed the muffler without changing to a Race ECM.I will not be changing the intake,I like the look of the factory air box.I have replace the air filter with a K&N stock replacement.Also how does the Supertrapp sound?

the trapp can sound as loud or as subdued as you want it to. add more discs and an open end cap for full flow and sound. closed cap will quiet it down some. take discs out to quiet it more, but go too far and you will start adding too much back pressure. i am not sure how much is too much. i wouldn't try fewer than maybe 10 discs with a closed cap??? anyone else try fewer??? i run 23 or so discs with an open cap.

I ran my 99 X1 with a D&D slip-on without doing any mods of about a year with no problems. I just installed an intake and uploaded the race ecm maps to my stock ecm using ecmspy. It made a huge difference in power and made it much smoother in the mid range. You should consider trying a K&N and getting a the race maps uploaded. It would be less than $100 on top of the exhaust. I can help with ecmspy and have a copy of a race ecm that would work for you.

I bought and installed the Trapp without changing anything, right out of the box.It sounds and runs perfectly and is of high quality material. Needless to say, I recommend it.

It Is built like a tank and weighs like on too, But like jstfrfun say's it's fully tunable. I had a carbon fiber vance and hines that was like 5lbs it was to awesome to be true it went 750 miles and literally blew up and out everywhere

On my trap i am running 12 disk's and and open end cap.

Open end cap open end cap open end cap i can't say it enough makes better power.

Actually I had dyno results prove that a properly tuned closed cap setup with the right amount of discs will make more power. I used to have a White Brothers 2-1 on my Sportster and it made more power with 14 discs and closed cap than any of the other disc amount combos. Of course heavier motor mods require more discs, but an open cap is essentially like running no discs open anyway.

I ran the ST on the standard ECM used all of the disks and the closed end cap ran ok

make sure that you have the improved one and not one with the flat end its a potential hazard.


The new one has a tapered front and the curved pipe is welded on as is the front bracket.

Oldog what is the hazards? I think it is the older style made in 2000.
Thank you to all for the input. I have a limited toy budget. I have purchased a NOS Pegasus seat from the same person. And I hope to get the Muffler from them as well in the near future.

the flat ended muffler can has been known to fail at the end where the end and the body are rolled together, the elbow is clamped on and can slip off

this allows the front of the can to drop, if it snags the pavement you do the "polevault" with much badness..

Supertrap has tried to eliminate all of the new to you mufflers that are the old style build,
If its the new style one with the elbow welded on to a tapered section at the front you are good to go they are TOUGH! Watch the rear hanger with the clamps the bracket ( shoe ) can break at the bend lines and they need to be rewelded if that happens.

Oldog I am getting the Supertrapp in a week or so.The pictures I saw so the frt elbow is a clamped on.The frt of the muffler is welded?This unit is NOS,are these problems very common?Should I have the frt pipe and the muffler tack by a good welder to prevent movement and still use the clamp?

Andrew the front edge of the muffler looks like a coffee can with a pipe sticking out if its the older one, and the elbow is a slip on

if its new in box and you have your purchase documents contact super trap directly for a replacement, if its used "YOYO" your on your own
it must be new and you must be the "purchaser" the contact in customer service is Jerrey she is good to work with.

Thanks for the info, yes it is new in the box. But I am buying from an individual not a business. The box is dated Aug 26/00 do you know when the change happened.The frt of the muffler is welded. I will keep an eye on it ft for slipping out. I don’t want it hitting my chin fairing.

I looked at the supertrapp catalog, I see the differences your referring too. I will keep an eye on it. The price difference is to great not to pick this one up.

I bought one of the old style trapps knowing that they would give me a new one to replace it. When it broke (didn't take long) I called them and they sent me a new one. It took them four months to do it, even with several polite phone calls every few weeks. In the interim, I bought a D&D system. I ended up selling the trapp. Good muffler though. In fact, trapp makes the Buell slip on race can for the tubers with stock pipes. It's the same part, one says Buell, one says supertrapp.

Did you have a receipt for the muffler or did you buy it used?How soon did it fail?

They didn't ask for a receipt. They recalled this as part of a safety campaign. Their goal is to remove them all from circulation. The fact that you have one is apparently good enough for them to figure that you bought one. Mine failed at the weld where the pipe enters the can at the front. The pipe goes into the can a few inches, so it didn't actually come out and dropt the can, but you could slide the can back and forth and wiggle it up and down.

Yes, both the original and replacement are stainless.
