I'm starting this thread because I want something to point new or potential Uly owners at,
when they ask about the bike. I leave things out when I do it from memory. I hope other people
will drop wisdom and corrections into this thread, I'll edit it back into this post. I'll
eventually find a good format to display the information as well.
This information primarily concerns problem areas of the bike, particularity one's which have fixes.

Kristi/Fats/Someone - How about we get a link to this put in above the threads in the main BB&D section? I know you can't sticky, but its close enough. Or possibly something like the Thumper section?

You're so funny! I did go back and change it just a little. Before when you pulled the page up, it didn't show up until you scrolled down...decided it needed to appear as soon as you pull the page up! What do you think?

I know that there is somewhere here on BadWeB there are instrunctions on which way to turn the timing plate to retard the timing, approxametly and how far to turn it.

Would it be possible for someone to post that information here please?

Hi all, I just got an 08 XT, where is the thread I saw about rebuilding the forks?

There were some really great tips and tools in it. Also I didn't get a tool kit with it and need some ideas about axle wrench improvision.

Thanks

Seems to me that a 3/4" nut tack welded to an appropriate bolt would do just fine.

If you could find a 3/4" nut that was at least 1.5" long that should do by itself.

Grats on the Uly!

I ended up using a sparkplug socket hex, it worked fine once I slid the rubber holder out.

By the way, what a tremendous bike, the Little Kid has ridden it more than me, I can't seem to get him off it.

I had the girlfriend out in the rain on Saturday evening and she was happy as a clam.

Hey Ulywife I just tried to edit my original post to add some more information about the updated 77 connector. The software says the message is too old to edit, and I should contact a custodian. : )

Here's another issue: the 2006 model's lack of an ECM block. In 2006, the low seat kit came with a plastic block to prevent the seat from rubbing on the ECM. In 2007, the block became standard. Without that block, the seat presses on the ECM until it breaks connections, and the ECM must be replaced.

The part numbers were very difficult to track down, so I'm posting them here for posterity (courtesy of Hardlya and Al at American Sport Bike):

1. Travel Limiter, N0903.1AK
2. Socket head cap screw, AA0410.2CZB

Here's a pic. It's in the upper left corner, on the front mounting bolt of the ECM.

GROUNDS - FYI ONLY

While tightening I found something I didn't like. It is a factory condition, nothing the dealer did. There are two screws on the left frame rail, adjacent to the ECM where grounds attach.

The front one lands 3 ring terminals. The wires attached to the terminals were stretched to two octaves above middle "C". In addition the goofy T27 screw is impossible to access properly without lots of removal.

I can see how it happened in production. When the fastener is tightened, the terminals get spun until tension on the attached wires stops them from following the rotation, thus leaving them in great tension.

I removed the T27 head fastener, went to the hardware store and got a hex head bolt the same size. Brushed all the ground clean, added two drops of Blue Loc-Tite to the new fastener and reattached the grounds.

I only did the front one and will likely do the rear this week.

I suspect this would never be a problem but it looks like potential for trouble and the factory arrangement, if something went wrong, would be a tough roadside fix. I can now, without removing anything expect the seat, check the tightness and re-tighten if necessary.

Grounds

This image shows the BEFORE condition - you can see how the tightening of the T27 head screw has rotated the ground wires until the tension on the wires prevented further rotation. I relieved this tension and replaced the fastener with one I could access from above

I think that I need to do that too Court. At 37,000 miles I am getting the ole "engine off for a split second and gauge reset" thing. It seems to happen more frequently each time I ride...and let me tell you, it is no fun while in a tight corner! The battery connectors are good and tight...so the ground points will be my next troubleshooting step.

> "engine off for a split second and gauge reset"

That could be a bad ground, but I'm more inclined to suspect a broken lead in the ECM connector. Especially if you don't have an ECM block to keep the seat off the harness.

When I had that problem, it was the ignition lead that signals the ECM when the kill switch is on. The effect was like flipping the kill switch off and then immediately back on. The check engine light would come on, and the bike would jerk as it bump started itself.

It was tough to trouble shoot because the act of climbing off the seat "fixed" it temporarily most times. I finally got it to stay broken while I climbed off, and I was able to replicate it by wiggling the rear ECM connector. The fix was to replace the ECM. With ECMSpy on hand, you can pick up any 03-07 XB12 ECM and copy your image to it.

A bad relay might also cause stalling, but in my case the bike would shut off and stay off. You might try reseating your relays or swapping the aux for the ignition. If that turns out to be the problem, it's a cheap fix at $5/relay from the dealership.

Just in case anyone's looking for it again, here are the various rear shock lengths for XB models according to various posts on Badweb:

Eye-to-eye shock lengths for various XB rear shocks:

SS - 13.625
S - 14.0
XT- 14.0
STT - 14.25
X - 15.0

This might be a good post to archive here for people looking for this info for lowering their Uly.
