Okay, I'm going to piggyback on the other thread since I just spoke with the powdercoater today and got some AWESOME prices. Here's the deal, I have a set of X1 forks I'm going to be powdercoating hopefully. I'd rather powdercoat than polish for multiple reasons. Anyways, the lower piece of the fork assembly, where the smaller tube is pressed in...Will that be okay to put through the process, as long as it's masked off and such? I have no idea how to go about getting the tube out, so I am hoping it'll work. Thanks! | ||

I've powdercoated pretty much all the chrome on my 2009 StreetGlide a few months ago, including the forks. I just taped off the parts I didn't want pc'ed. I rebuilt the forks with absolutely no issues. When I do my X1 forks, I plan on doing the bottom (I have to see how the adjustment screw is set there first) and just mask off the slider. I did the fork lowers on my Sportster. They turned out great, but here is where I had a problem. I didn't clean all the oil out of the fork lower (assumed the powder coater would do that.) All he did was sand blast the parts leaving a lot of abrasive residue inside the fork. Fortunately I noticed it before reassembly, but it took a lot of washing and rinsing to get them clean. ymmv! | ||

I have no idea how to go about getting the tube out, so I am hoping it'll work. Yes, you will be fine. Just mask what you dont want the coated to coat, and you will be good to go. Your powder coater should clean them well, but, it would be in your better interest to do that yourself first.... I have done more than a few sets of forks like that... no worries |
