Yamaha makes good products. i don't have much experience with them. but that board should do everything you need it to do. |

I liked that it had built in compression, which you guys seem to agree is needed. Since it's only on 6 channels, and I would eventually be running 7 mics, which woudln't do best without it? |

you don't really need to compress any mics used for cymbals. |

I don't know anything about their mixing boards but we've had a Yamaha reverb unit (purchased 2nd hand) in our rack for ~10 years. Seems well made and hasn't missed a lick. |

Nice. I'll do some price digging on that guy, then. I'm also finding some larger Mackie boards that I can pick up used for around $250 that might go for as well. |

Carvin,Carvin,Carvin! Top quality at half the price! And if you don't like ir send it back! Their boards and power amps are top notch! I've played with only a mic in the kick drum and it worked pretty well! I'm a guitar player and lead singer so I argue with myself a lot! If ur drummer hits like a girl then run one overhead mic! I've even recorded that way with good results! I play loud onstage and the drummer still seems to be heard! (Think I shoud run another amp! But then the singer will bitch!(Wait, that's me too...)Just my thoughts/experience. |

Or what about this guy? http://www.guitarcenter.com/Soundcraft-EFX-8-Chann el-Mixer-630344-i1389064.gc I know you all keep saying "get all the features you can", but I think this one is the closest to being everything I need to submix drums, add some reverb and send it to a main board, without having a bunch of stuff I don't need (or think I need). I'm more intersted in people's perception of the brand. As much as I'd love to get a big board that the whole band can be on, my budget would mean I'd have to give up some things, like portability, built-in effects, etc. I'd like to be able to be self-suffecient for this - either this Soundcraft board or the Yamaha would give me everything I needed just for myself to feed into a main board... well, combined with a compressor/gate - which I'm still confused about. If I get a compressor gate, are they typically only for one channel, and therefore the same settings would have to be used for the entire mix? That doesn't make sense in my head, since a gate is supposed to stop bleed, which I don't think can be done if it recieves just the main mix as a signal. This stuff gets more and more confusing the more I ask. |

soundcraft make very good products. i don't think you could go wrong with the yamaha or the soundcraft. i would tend to lean towards the yamaha becouse of the built in compressors. as far as compressors go. first and for most you want to compress your kick and snare. a typical compressor comes with 2 channels. which behringer makes some pretty good compressors. i have a couple and they work just fine. i also own a presonus ACP-88 which is a bit pricey but will cover your whole drumset in a 2 rackspace unit. http://www.guitarcenter.com/PreSonus-ACP-88-8-Chan nel-Compressor-Gate-100376369-i1125330.gc basically what a compressor does is it squeezes the sound signal. cuts out the transient sound waves, and makes the signal easier to control. for example if are hitting your kick drum at a certain level then all of a sudden hit it really f#$%ing hard. the compressor will keep the sound level from spiking and blowing your speakers or distorting the sound. it will also help the stuff you play really lightly be heard. |

Well I found a screamin' deal on the Soundcraft, so I went with that. I really like how small it is - I think that's what sold me. What I was finding was that I'd need to get a noise gate anyways for either board, and I was finding that noise gates and compressors were generally found in the same unit, so I'd be buying one anyways even if I did get the Yamaha. I ran this stuff by our lead guitarist and he felt the Souncraft board should be a no brainer, so I took that to heart. It just feels good to have finally decided on something, haha. |

Don't ever make the mistake of thinking that simply cause you "decided on something" that you are done buying . . . now begins the quest to own something to plug into every input and output jack on the damn thing . . . welcome to the sickness!

G.A.S-.Gear Aquisition Syndrome!! Is what its called! If I sold just my guitars I could get an 1125cr AND a 1125r and still have money left over for accessories! I got it BAD! My wife hates me! Lol! I love Carvins powered mixers (12ch.) For small gigs but I play in a power trio. I'm the lead singer and only guitar and we usually run sound from the stage. I wear a wireless system so I or the bass player can walk out front and listen to the mix. After a few gigs you pretty much have a decent mix already set up and u can tweek it from there! Usually we rent our sound from a company and they run it for us!Top notch equiptment and sober soundguy! Nothin breaks up a band quicker than tearing P.A. Down at 2:30! So the renting PA is a savior! |

FYI - I should have taken heed to Court's advice. The microphone I purchased on eBay showed up today, and it turns out to be a fake. After some research, it turns out there are a LOT of counterfeit SM57's on eBay, so beware if you decide to go that route. The seller has offered a full refund, and I'll be spending the extra $30 at my local music store to get the real deal. |

If you pay less than $99 for an SM57 it is a fake. Sometimes . . you'll see some cagey $89 with a coupon deal but you're better off to pay the $99, get the SM57 and be done with it. It will last longer than you. . . ditto the SM58. Same goes for Boss TU-2 Tuner . . . if you see it for less than $99 . . . . caveat musician. Court |
