What kind of amsoil should I run in my XB9S? I heard a lot of people say they run 20w50 in both primary and tranny. Is this correct? |

Yes this is correct. I recommend using synthetic as it helps keep the engine temperatures down 10 degrees. |

So, just to be clear. I SHOULD use 20w50 in both the Tranny AND the primary. Correct? Additionally, when changing to oil, does either the primary or the tranny require a flush of some kind? Like running them for 100 miles and then draining and refilling? |

No flushing required. Just make the switch and ride happily. |

Amsoil Synthetic 20W-50 is superior to anything with an H-D label for both the engine and primary. Change it and never look back... |

no doubt but always a little leery of the stator thing and synthetics shorting them out although I think its more a theory than a fact |

MCV 20W50 In both holes is a very Good idead. I have been using the WIX filter but got a Amsoil filter number EAO10 for next time. |

Been down that road before... it's a bearing problem- not an oil failure. With Amsoil's guarantee, if their product causes a failure they will pay for the repairs- but I guarandamntee ya that H-D will never admit their bearings are to blame unless you were using H-D labeled oil (cause they would have no one else to blame). And, some would argue, you have been putting Amsoil in a tractor |

I used AMSOIL 20W-50 in my XB12R street bike, engine and primary, for many years when I had it with absolutely no issues. The extended oil change intervals were a plus also. Now, I use it in my XB12R race bike which gets the snot beat out of it as soon as it rolls of the trailer and it has worked great in both holes. www.racingwithralph.blogspot.com |

Amsoil Synthetic Motorcycle oil 20W-50. Instantly smoother shifts and seems to run cooler. l recommend it in both engine and trans. |

Amsoil in both here also. IMO the XB runs too hot to use conventional oils for 4-5k change intervals. I don't use it in my truck because $120 for oil is nuts plus the oil temp never goes above the water temp. |

Amsoil in the race bike, engine and primary. No probs to date. Will switch the street bike over at the next oil change. |

Saratoga, For $20 you can buy a "dealership" and buy the oil at dealer cost. You should look into it. Or you can buy the preferred customer deal. http://www.amsoil.com/catalog.aspx?category=22 |

I ran Amsoil in my engine for about 2 oil changes, but then when i brought her out here to Cali I cant seem to find it anywhere. So i went to Mobil 1. Still use the Formula+ in my primary though, read one too many scary stories about stator problems on here to try anything different. |

So let me get this straight, is formula+ a sythetic or dino HD oil? Also is it only the stator or also clutch problems? I have heard both. Im definetly going to be using Royal Purple in my 1000 mile switch, heard great things about it, but have yet to decide what to put in the tranny. My bike shifts buttery smooth (did I just get lucky?) right now with 110 miles on it... So I am not to worried about the shift quality of whatever I replace it with. Doesnt click into the higher gears like a Japanese bike but the 1-2nd change is smoother and all the other changes are smooth enough... No clank... One false neutral but I slipped up on my shift. |

^Bump good questions. Also, I'm getting a little concerned with the Stator problems people keep mentioning, should I be worried or is this an old wives tail and not scientifically proved? |

Jraice I'm using Amsoil in both holes on my 09 and didn't notice a difference in the shifting but like you I thought it shifted smooth with the factory oil. The engine does seem to run a little cooler the fan dosen't come on as much. I haven't experienced any clutch or stator problems. I know the extended change intervals may be good for some but I'm going to change mine sooner. Seems like cheap insurance. |

There's a lot of info here about that issue- a search will give you a plethora of opinions on the subject. It appears that some of the additives in some of the oils (Mobil) *may* have an adverse effect on stators. The alleged problem is not a synthetic oil issue- it's an additive package issue, and seems to be limited to a specific oil. As you can see from the responses here, Amsoil users are extremely happy with the product and are not having any stator issues. Do some research and decide for yourself. |

Only thing to remember is to avoid some of the GL-5 oils. A mineral based GL-5 oil has a higher sulphur content than other oils, and sulphur likes to eat copper, which is on your stator. I'm not sure about synthetic GL-5; I've heard they don't have the same sulphur content. (Message edited by boltrider on March 25, 2009) |

Thanks guys I think, considering my tranny shifts fine, Ill do formula+ (still an upgrade over whats put in stock, no?). I really want to do royal purple in the engine though and maybe in the future Ill try it in both. Planning to have them do the change at the 5000 intervals and do it myself inbetween at the 2500. Should I change tranny as well every 2500 or let it get changed every 5000 when they do it? |
