As I mentioned a few weeks ago
Erik Buell will be at Cycle Connection Harley-Davidson/Buell in Joplin, MO on March 20, 2009. If you're interested in attending the VIP meet and greet at 5pm on Friday March 20th, you just have to take a demo ride and you'll get entered to win a VIP ticket. Then his Trilogy of Tech seminar will be at 7pm.

Also, if you don't know your horsepower or the torque of your bike you can come by Cycle Connection in Joplin this Saturday for some FREE Dyno readings!

Good morning everyone. Ok off the wall question here. Just received a new Buell Jacket as a gift. The Black Mesh one from the dealer. Anyhow, I was noticing that it only has shoulder and elbow body armor (snicker) and only a a very small pocket in the back for a dorsal pad. Does anyone know who might sell a pad that would fit the pocket. I am considering have my wife sew something new in so I can take the pad out of my Joe Rocket jacket and use it. As you may have guessed the people at my local HD dealership were absolutely no help.

thanks guys...peace

Hi there,

you could probably have a look to pads that do not need to fit into the jacket but that you can wear underneath. I am going to buy a forcefield Pro L2 Back that was rated as best back protector in tests and I had very good reports from friends.

http://www.forcefieldbodyarmour.com/back_protector _sport.asp

I don't know if it sold anywhere in USA (I am from Italy).

Ciao
Gianluca

Most Buell riding gear is made by Joe Rocket, it looks like yours is the "Big Bang" jacket, perhaps JR sells what you are looking for?

The Project

A 1972 Yamaha 200, 2-stroke twin

The reason

A neighbor who has let me store my bikes in his machine shed during the winter brought this home from his farm's machine shed (another farm).

The dilemma

Last summer he asked me to make it run for him. I told him I would but kind of blew him off. Finally I agreed to give it a shot. I told him that if it didn't turn over it wasn't worth it, it did. I told him that if it didn't fire it may not be worth it. And of course the gas tank is full of rust.

Day 1

Today I picked up the bike after making sure it wasn't seized. I pulled the carbs and was amazed at how clean they were. Did I mention that this bike is a '72 and hasn't been licensed since 1982? Most likely it hasn't even run in 25 years.

I put the carbs back on, filled the crankcase with oil. Since it's a 2-stroke it uses oil injection so I added some oil to the reservoir.
Filled the floats with gas, cleaned the plugs (they looked great too), squirted a little gas in the cylinders before trying it. Kicked it over, and I'll be damned - it started!

Next thing I'll have to do is take care of the rusty tank. Then lube the cables, chain, repack the bearings, fork seals, oh and the lights still work.

Day 2 - The Bad News

This is the pile of rust I poured out of the tank. I knew it was bad but wow, this is really bad.

I'm going to treat it and see if I can keep it from flaking off much more but I think the owner will be fighting this for a long time.

I didn't know you put oil in the crankcase. I thought the rod and main bearings were lubed by injection or the gas/oil mix.

Well that's what I thought too but at least this model of 2-stroke has both types of lubing. I wondered if anyone would catch that. There is a dipstick for the crankcase and an oil tank on the side.
A service or owner's manual would be nice but since he wants to do this on the cheap we'll do what we can.

You can see the injection hose come from underneath the carb to the bajo bolt at the intake.

WOOOW does that bring back memories!!! Back in the day, a year or so before that model, I had a girlfriend that went so far to get me back that she bought one of those 200 Yamahas and tried to learn how to ride it. I had a 1960 Norton 500 single and she wanted to ride along with me.

Guess what??? It worked, she got me back and I taught her to ride ( not that I'm such a prize but, back in the day on my snort'n Norton and Bell Star I left quite an impression!!!!).

The 200 Yamaha is NOT the ideal newbie ride since it doesn't make any power till about 7k and then it likes to raise the front end.

Mike, thanks you very much for bringing back those memories. BTW, that relationship only last another 11 months, until we got caught, how should I say it, between the sheets in her parents house.

Anyway, the Norton, and Janet were all VERY nice "rides"

Time2Run B4 I get censored, later all.

iamike--If I recall correctly, those bikes had a separate oil reservoir for the transmission--that's probably what you filled.

By the way, make real sure the oil injection lines are clear and full (no air bubbles) before you try any high-RPM running. You can probably guess how I know this...

Cool bike!

Thanks RT-

Day 3 -
Well I cleaned out the petcock today. Man was it bad, full of gunk. Put gas in it and wow, does it run.

I'm guessing the oil injection is off though, it smokes like crazy. Do any of you remember, does it use 2-cycle oil or regular? I also have oil pouring out of the output shaft area too when it is running. But boy does it run!

You can mix the 2 stroke oil with gas if the injector won't work.

Yeah, 2-stroke oil goes in the tank. Be sure to lube the cables, and IIRC, there will be a cable (usually connected where the throttle cable splits into 2 cables, one for each carb) that runs to an oil pump. Though I don't see that cable in the pics. Anyway, there will usually be scribe marks on the cam the cable rides in, that line up at WOT, so you know the cable is properly adjusted.

Hope this makes sense, and is helpful. Dave

2 cycle oil in the gas if the injector's not working, not sure what goes in the trans, probably 10W-40 or similar. There might be a legend on the cap.

Hey thanks for the info. The close-ups make it look a lot worse than what it is.

Neither oil cap says what type, just 'motor oil' that was why I was curious.

The fuel isn't flowing well so I am sure that will be a big problem for a long time with all the crud that was in the tank.

It looks like I'll have to dissasemble the left side to find where that oil is coming from.

Do you have a hammer driver?

If you try to back those Phillips-head bolts out with a screwdriver you'll almost certainly destroy them. You can probably guess how I know this, too...

Yep, been there, done that!

I got a lot of use out of that tool on my old Hondas.

It's funny how hard it is to get those bolts out until after you drill off the head, and then you can turn them out with your fingers.

I'm waiting for it to warm up a little so I can open the garage door when I run the little Yammie. It smokes too much to run right now in the cold with the door closed. I found a little screw adjuster with a lock nut under the small cover abouve the shifter shaft, that wouldn't be the oil injection adjuster would it? That also seems to be the area where all the oil is coming from when it runs. The oil hoses all run under the right side cover so I was just going to pull the covers off anyway to see what's what.

IAMike,
man that is a Yamaha CS200! I experience my first tank slapper, first major slide on ice and that was the only bike I've ever been 'ejected' from. My buddy decided to pull a wheelie as I was getting off the back. One of the last bikes I ever rode on the back of

Fun bike, I think the official designation is a CS5. You see a couple at vintage days every year

First was to delete them, but at 10 at a time well that took a while, thought I was done when I got to 0, but oh no, got to now empty to the 'trash', another 2k pluss of deletions. all in all I spent about an hour at it. I was sure I could empty the trash all at once, but there was no function f or that manouver...bummer.
