Hey all, I am new to Buells and motorcycles. I was a dirtbiker. Anyway just bought a 200 xb9sx. I was wondering if Buells in particular are high on thieves lists. What kind of security measures are best? IE: locks, alarms. Thanks, lots of info here love this site. | ||

wow you guys are just buying em up in Nashua! i haven't personally done anything sec. wise to my 9sx, if someone really wants it there gonna get it. they are small and light and 2 guys could easily grab it and be gone. just make sure you are well insured and ride the piss out of it! welcome to the board, stop by  (Message edited by ustorque on March 22, 2009) | ||

I find a good layer of mud,dirt and grime deters most people from touching my bike psst, that cityX will do dirt too, so you didnt give the trails up for good. | ||

Buells are not on any professional thieves list, but they are on a joy riders list (as are all motorcycles) I have mine chained down, with a basic noise alarm. None of this will stop a pro, but will scare the curious away. | ||

I'm defintley investing in a 2-way "pager" alarm, the kind that pages you when someones messing with your bike. | ||

Here is something to think about. This was a long long time ago in Chicago. Back in high school a friend of mine installed a pager to a relay that would kill the fuel pump on his car if paged. Not sure if pagers even exist anymore but if not available cell phones are cheap enough now that you can add one to your plan for just a few more dollars per month. So if you get a really tiny cell phone that is GPS enabled you can hide it in the bike somewhere and not only will you be able to track it but if its actually wired to disable the bike you will be on your way to getting your bike back pretty quickly. | ||

It seems to me that a lot of those "alarms" are freakin expensive. Maybe I am looking at the wrong ones. I was thinking I could just chain it up to my cadillac. I am more worried about the Buell than the caddy, go figure. I need to spend some money on riding gear, but I can afford the chain. My other option is a storage place 1/4 mile up the street. $60 a month not too bad. | ||

Or you could purchase a gently used enclosed trailer and properly secure it as well. Not sure if space permits. Plus you'll own it in a couple of years at your storage rate. | ||

I have a Gorilla alarm from cycle gear about $100 I looked at the paging ones but they don't send the signal to far and even less if there's a wall. Might work for your house. But none of the above will stop 2 guys from tossing it in the back of a pick up. | ||

I use a Xena disc lock with built in alarm. I like that it's two things in one unit. The alarm is not as loud as I'd like, but it's a small package so I can't complain. I'm not sure why some of those disc locks are so stout - seems like it would be easier to just unbolt the disc from the wheel than to try to defeat the disc lock (at least for purposes of rolling the bike into a truck). | ||

An alarm of any sort should get you a break on your insurance. Two guys with a truck/van/trailer & it's gone in seconds. Pros can pull the pager quickly. +1 on insurance. Scattering a few crushed beer cans and some empty shotgun shells around the bike when I park it works for me. | ||

If anyone wants a Lo-Jack for their laptop . . . I bought it when I ordered a new T-61. In the meantime I "went Mac" and sent the Lenovo back so I have an unopen PC Lo-Jack. | ||

how do u guys feel about lo-jack? For Buell, a complete waste. For a Honda Civic, well worth looking into. I have been on this forum since 2006, in that time I can only remember a couple of out and out thefts. And maybe a handful of attempted thefts (or vandalism). Now compare that to an R1/R6 forum thefts are almost a daily occurrence. If you really want to track your vehicle, there are a number of inexpensive GPS based tracking systems. Some are all inclusive, you pay a monthly fee and the service handles the rest. Others are more hands on. You use a GSM sim card and it reports back to you on your set schedule. LoJack is strictly for law enforcement. You can only get a fix on your bike when it has been report stolen. not whenever you feel like it. |
