Getting my bike [04 12S] ready for years first big ride. Bike leaning a bit far, found a broken side stand bolt. I remember there is an upgrade pin w/clip available but can I still get the old style bolt. Mine lasted since 04 & almost 30000 mi. Do I need a kit w/new side stand? How about a little shade tree engineering? I was thinking about MB VI but that may be a stretch. It's only a few days away. Thanks for any & all help. Always amazed at the help from Badweb. Jon

Mine did the same exact thing. It took a little doing but eventually i figured out how to resolve this problem with some grade 8 bolts from the hardware store. I wasnt able to find the stock bolt anywhere. And i didnt have the cash to buy the kit.

The O4 has a bolt very poor bolt design and the bolt was discontinued several years ago.

When I used up my supply of original bolts,( I had three of them), I bought a used 2006 kick stand on eBay, and installed that. I bought a spare set of bolts just in case as the mounting bolts are slightly unusual.

The kickstand is easy to remove, only two bolts holding it on, however the muffler must be removed to remove the bolts.

I took advantage of the muffler removal to repaint the muffler which had a few rusty spots.

You can just remove the existing kick stand and mounting plate, and drill out the them to take a high strength bolt as 'bolt mentions above. I forget what size it is, but it won't be hard to figure out.

If you do buy a used kick stand make sure you do not buy a 2003. Not many of them out there, ( I have one:-).
You can recognize the 2003 because it has an electrical switch on it and another type of bolt you can't replace very easily.
