Hi all,

I went grocery shopping and on my way back home heard this horrible clunking sound. At first, I thought that I had bumped the kickstand after I shifted. The noise happened a few more times and the rear end felt loose so I pulled over.

Good thing, in looking everything over, I noticed that the rear wheel bearing on the belt side was toast. I called the dealer but they couldn't come get it so I pushed it about 3 miles or so to a place where I could leave it for a bit. I walked another couple miles to work and grabbed a work truck with a lift gate and took it to the next closest dealer for the 15K and the repair. Hope it didn't hurt anything else like the axle. We'll see.

I have the worst damn blisters on my feet and require beer, that's about the extent of my injuries. All told, my CityX has just been great. It has really only broken down a couple times and it's just been little stuff. Belt, the bearing, brake switch. What a great bike. I love 'em.

Beer time.

I'll be riding the Sporty till she's fixed.

etc...

oh well, sucks about the bearing. hope the rest of the bike is ok. good luck!

and good up to you for walking your bike 3 miles. i don't even like walking to the end of the street.

I just noticed that my Progressive insurance covers me for roadside assistance -- including everything from running out of gas or a flat,or mechanical breakdown -- 24/7. I checked the cost because I don't remember asking for it -- $10/yr!. They give you a phone number, again 24/7, and they actually dispatch someone to come tow you or otherwise fix you up. I'm pretty amazed -- and pleased.

I never said anything about having any terribly profound or interesting thoughts. Sorry

Just thinking that my Buell has been pretty darn reliable as my primary means of transportation. I've kinda bonded with it in the same way that I did with certain special vehicles. Like a great puppy or something, when it has a wreak it somehow knows to do it so it's easy to clean up. ( close to home ) instead of on the carpet.

Hot woman list? Jesus help us. I bet he pulls 'em though.

Sticks you said it was the bearing on the belt side and that it was toasted. What did it look like? The only reason I ask is cause I noticed that the one on my XB looks like its getting a little bit of rust on the edges, but was thinking that it might just be this Florida weather, sand etc.

Check your bearings every time you take the wheel off. I tend to eat bearings.

Hey Cable,

Mine was plain gone. The plastic dust cap or whatever it is had popped out and I could clearly see the actual ball bearings. Bu bye. So the outer part was gone.

I'd think the "hostile environment" person to talk to would be Cityxslicker. I'm in Washington too, but well, his bike is always covered in Washington. Not sure how conditions effect longevity. Surely it takes a tole on stuff.

Froggy sounds like he's had to deal with a few failed bearings.

Never broken down because of the bearings, but both of my Buells have eaten orange seal bearings in short time. I have NTNs on my Uly-thing now, as waiting for the new black seal bearings from Buell would of kept me down for a few more days, vs the NTNs were on hand. I really wanted to try the black seals, they are standard on the 09s.

06 these were orange. I tried to ride it slow but even so 115lbs of Sticks + maybe 30lbs of groceries it was making evil evil Linda Blair sounds. I maybe could have rode it but it didn't seem safe or wise.

I am curious where did this happen, and where did you push it?

I can already picture the Clark Griswald forced march. : )

West Seattle. I only live about 5 miles from where I had trouble. It wasn't that big a deal. Work is about 1.3 miles from my place. So it's all pretty close.

I just needed to get it taken care of that day. No way was I going to just leave it sitting anywhere and I couldn't get anybody to help as far a friends or the dealerships in the way of picking it up.

I don't think any of the dealerships are open on Sundays until summer.

You guys are starting to scare me.

In all my years of mx, I don't remember changing wheel bearings. I can remember doing it, just not on my own bikes.

How do you check a bearing? What do I look for? Does anybody have the actual bearing number (not the part number)?

The rears are 6006 and fronts are 6005.

Do a search on here for bearings, lots of thread on how to check, how to pack grease, how to change, etc.
