After a few weeks at the dealership, I finally have the bike back with the 09' instrument cluster. Is there a way to make it so you can see the gear and the engine temperature instead of gear and the the air temp? |

Dont believe so, the choice of gear and intake air temp is strange - gear position and coolant temp would be my choice, a useful mod would be to have the display cycle through the various screens or for an owner to pick two screens of information to alternate between automatically, this would be of more use to be than a lap timer. I wrote to Buell USA to suggest this last year after taking delivery in November of the 1125R |

Yeah the new layout of the information on the '09 cluster sucks. Why can't we have coolant temp and gear on the same screen? The ambient temp is near useless information anyway? My body tells me if it is hot, cold or in between....and the damn ambient temperature is WRONG 90% of the time. BAD CALL BMC. After a few weeks at the dealership Unacceptable that Buell can't get these bikes diagnosed, fixed and out of the shop in a more timely manner. |

Why doesn't Buell do some focus group work on the IC layout or other things? THIS would be a great place for them to start... |

"Unacceptable that Buell can't get these bikes diagnosed, fixed and out of the shop in a more timely manner." Because of Badweb I had a pretty good idea that the security system/Instrument Cluster was draining the battery. I also took it in to have another rear turn signal replaced. So when I took it in I asked them to look at the specific tech tip that had come out regarding the earlier 08' models and the cluster. They seemed to be familiar with the what I was talking about. In the dealership's defense, they had to wait a week or so for Buell to ship a new Instrument Cluster. And the bike was done on Saturday, but between it snowing and me having strep throat, I was unable to pick it up until Wed. It does kind of suck that while it was in the shop we had a couple of days around 70 degrees ... kind of odd for Feb/March in Colorado. I would agree that seeing the air temp/ambient temp is pretty much pointless. |

Yes, Badweb provides you with some ammo when you get to the dealer. No pulling the wool over our eyes. I have even had my service manager ask if I have heard "such and such" on the "Buell forum." Credit to him for looking at Badweb as a resource, not a rumor mill. |

Does anyone know if the IC for the R and CR are different? Just trying to gauge how the cluster might adapt to the different bikes.... |

As long as we're discussing (complaining?) the gauges, how about a fuel gauge. I'd like to know before the last gallon whether I need to stop for fuel or not. What if I'm more than 30 odd miles from a gas station? |

EWWW..how about a digital fuel gauge that counts down from 5.3 gallons? Should be able to have a distance to empty function too. |

I would guess that the clusters are different between the R and CR. These bikes are geared different and the cluster would be different because of that. |

Chevy, i would think so too, but there has also been some conjecture here that the differences are handled in the software. The cluster just has to be "notified" somehow of which type of bike... |

The cluster will know whether it is an R or a CR from the VIN number and will set the speedometer display calibration to suit. IC cannot be flashed so we are stuck with the information screens that we now have, not good enough, I need gear and coolant temperature not gear and intake temperature |

The bar on the left is a fuel gauge that runs down, and it displays my distance to empty, average MPG, and real time MPG. On the other screen it gives gear indicator, speed, RPM, lap time, and other stuff. Ignore the Max speed, I miss-calibrated the speed sensor! (Or thats what I tell the police) |

So Froggy, how does the fuel level get calculated? how much was that unit? |

http://www.veypor.com/vr2.html - $250 When I fill up I tell it I filled up and how much gas I put in, and how big the tank is. Do that a few times to calibrate it, and then fill up, tell it you refilled and it resets the fuel gauge and distances. Same way most reset the tripometer when they fill up. Its pretty good, but sometimes its inaccurate as I can get anywhere from 30-75mpg on my XB. The XB lacks cool stuff like a shift light and gear indicator, so this fills the void |

Is it GPS based? |

No, it has a speed sensor you mount to something that moves, I used the rear brake rotor. Also a second wire taps into the ignition coil to detect your RPM. |
