I downloaded ECMSPY - and I ordered the cable - it arrived today - except when I executed the run file, it all came up in German - is there a button I can just click to toggle it over??? Naaaa - that would be too easy!!!! Does anyone know the "exactness" to get the ENGLISH rendition????
Thanks,

i know its probably been discussed a million times, but how hard is ecm spy to use? is it simple to do tps resets and harder to plug in maps?

the soft ware is well designed and executed

By all means do what the author suggests make safe backups of the ecm before any changes!

Everything in ECMspy is easy. Easy to TPS reset, and also easy to grenade the motor ; )

Don't be afraid to ask for help! : )

There is also a very long thread (about 50 pages) in www.buellinboard.com about ECMSPY. Take your time and read it. Well worth the time. I think it is the best freeware ever made!

I have downloaded EcmSpy and the driver required for my system. I am not a computer illiterate,,,,, I can not get the system to link up....it's seems to be a port issue, and I do know how to manipulate devises and ports, they match right now, yet nothing is working at this moment. The EcySpy guide gets into an if-and-but mode mode when port trouble is encountered - directions are geared towards IT lingo. I'm gonna have to elicit some tele help if I can find someone willing to help me.

My opinion at this point is that unless you have an IT background, the EcmSpy IS NOT very user friendly. There is not enough program feedback as you attempt to move through the menus to let you know things are working correctly - there is no useful help information available.

Looking at the main/general menu on EcmSpy,I was hopeful that I could use the program for diagnostics and trouble code info, as I have no current need for the re-mapping portion of the program. Some of the other comments on this site have me wondering if I might accidentally set myself up for engine damage.

Anyone available for a tele conversation - expert-to-dummy mode? my dime

Thanks,
Dennis

Hi S3t,
I am a big fan of ECM Spy but found the port selection process to be a mystery. I had to keep re-starting the program and let ECM Spy pick the right COM port. This was the only tense moment using the program. Dumb questions here - you do have the key turned to the run position ?? - sorry I had to ask b/c... well - you probably know why! I can help you out with the mapping process etc., but every time I get a COM port I count it as good luck because I don't understand that part of it. I'm not a techy guy but I can find my way around the program once you get a connection with your ECM.}

That problem is not with ECMspy. The interface was designed to be used with a serial cable, and if you used one you would not have that issue. Most people are using USB, which requires the converter chip. The driver adds another COM port to the computer to simulate a serial port, and then converts the data so it works over the USB. The newest version of ECMspy auto detects the correct COM port, so as long as you got the driver installed correctly you should not have an issue.

If you have the USB cable, you also need to install the USB com port driver. Once you do that, the cable is ready to configure on a com port.

However, getting it assigned to one can sometimes be tricky. When I build up cables here, I test every one, TWICE, once before potting the connector, and once after potting the connector. After a bunch of cables get hooked up, the autodetect stops recognizing them. Here's what I have to do:
1) Go to device manager. (If I have to tell you how to do that, you may be in over your head)
2)Go to "+Ports(COM & LPT)", and rotate the +
3) If the driver has been installed correctly, you'll see an entry that says "USB Serial Port (COM 3)". The COM port might have a different number on it. Right click this. If you DON'T see this entry under the Ports (COM & LPT) section in the device manager, re-install the cable driver.
4)Select Properties
5)Select the Port Settings tab.
6)Select Advanced
7)The top setting will be the com port number. Select a number different than the one that is currently assigned. It may tell you that it's already in use or something like that. You can likely disregard, I do.
8) Click OK on everything, and then go to ECMspy and have it Autodetect the Com port again. It should find it this time.

Thanks Al - I've been through all of that.

However, when I use the auto detect option, or even manually select the port, I get a pop-up window that tells me to connect to the bike, turn on the key, and switch - I've already done that by then. When I click OK - the program testes for com 2, com3 then up pops a window that says if fail to get com port - like it's not connected to the bike or something - but the cable and connection are good - could it be the driver?

dlb

I reinstalled the driver - and my computer confirmed successful install. Devise manager shows USB on COM2. I click on COM4, went back to EcmSpy and ran auto detect - same result, it will scan for ports but it ends up with a pop-up that says it failed to get com port.

I have checked the connections over and over...

I had an IT guy help me out with the configuration - it's now working.

After running the fuel pump diagnostics...."trouble code 33 fuel pump shorted to ground or open".

manual lists 1) blows ignition fuse(nope), 2)fuel pump runs even without motor running (nope).

last one is 3) pump motor stalls or spins without providing fuel pressure. I checked the fuel pressure it runs inconsistently -between 20 and 50lbs when energized....so probably that is the issue....at least I hope so. . . .although it sure seems like it should at least TRY to start when the pump pressure hits 40+lbs.

"short to ground or open" - does that mean that the fuel pump motor has just shorted out?????

Thanks to you guys for the help....

It could be a short but i know if you un plug the fuel pump with the battery connected it will show that same code, Also if you unplug an injector the same thing will happen. Erase the codes and start over. Did you disconnect anything while the battery was connected? If so you will get an instant code, Try it out. I thought my codes were there because of real problems but it was just my dumb a%% unplugging things.
I haven't heard much about the fuel pressure regulator going out but that could be you problem, It is just to bad someone by you wouldn't mind taking there fuel cell off and doing a swap test on your bike!

"short to ground or open" - does that mean that the fuel pump motor has just shorted out

This refers to the ground wire. A chafed and grounded wire will make the fuel pump run continously, when the wire is broken the fuel pump will not run at all.

Both errors will prevent the ECM from monitoring any voltage, so this error is raised.

S3T - glad to hear you got ECM Spy running - I wish I could have helped ya but when you need an IT, nothing else will do. Good luck on the pump gremlin - let us know what you find.

According to the manual pin jumper code 33, plus ecmspy diagnostics code 33 confirming such - I should have a blown fuse or a bare short/grounded wire somewhere,,,,or.....no fuel pressure....none of those were present, but I had sporadic fuel pressure, so I spent the $200 and bought and installed the new pump.

Bike still will not start.

Error codes are now clear though.

Does anyone know if the injectors are supposed to click or make any noise during the diagnostics? I don't hear anything when I run that test with ECMSPY.

I am about to push this POS over the cliff.
