A few weeks ago I sent off my oil sample to Blackstone labs. While checking the oil back in January I noticed a slight smell of gas and wanted to see how much. The analysis in general turned out pretty good I guess. They said wearing better than normal. I chalk that up to being a loyal AMSOIL customer. However, my suspicions of fuel in the oil were confirmed. Blackstone suggests idle or city riding as the possible cause. I did cold start the bike and let it run at idle all the way up to 180 on 5 different occasions on this tank of oil, to upload new maps via ECMspy. Other than that I'm wondering what else is happening here.

It's normal. Those piston rings aren't a solid seal. That is one of the reasons oil breaks down, the fuel vapors build up in the crankcase. Lots of cold starts and short runs will contaminate it faster. And will also cause sludging.... Which is a big no no! Just make sure your hitting the highway for a long ride every now and then, or just making sure she is getting nice and hot on a back road and all is good. But short trips are horrible for any engine, especially if you start and go. Always let an engine idle for a bit before taking off. And take it easy until warmed up. You need good oil and oil flow. |

If you really wanna be horrified, add an oil-breather catch can. You won't be able to sleep at night once you see what (and how much) accumulates in there. A few golden cliches: Don't over-analyze. Ignorance truly can be bliss. And as a Hell's Angel type once said to me: "Just shut the f--- up, and RIDE the f---er!" Proverb to live by. |
