I'll be trading my 05 XB12S in on a Uly soon and was curious which set of hard bags do people prefer? Why? It looks like the original bags (the standard on the XT) are larger, but Buell doesn't list the volumes. I'd like the larger of the bags. |

The Journeys on the XT are 42L sides, and 40 for topcase. The Juniors (Outdoorsman set) are 30L sides and 45L top. You can get larger bags from the company and stick the Buell decal on them. You can get a 50L Journey topcase, and 40L Junior side cases. |

Oh yea before anyone else says it, many people like the Juniors better because of the latching. The Journeys have issues with latches breaking, and require a key to open and close. The Juniors have more robust latching and can be opened without the key as long as its not locked. |

Outdoorsman bags all the way. They are smaller but better made. The latches on the Journeys suck. Plus, if you want to use different bags from H&B down the road, you can just sell the Outdoorsman bags and swap out. You can't do that with the Journey hoops from Buell. |

I'll defend the Journey bags a little -- yes, the latches are a weak point, and on some of the early ones (mine) the seals fell out. But...I go moto-camping a lot, and I sure appreciate their capacity. Also, they are quite tough (although both got totaled in my deer strike @ 72 mph). --Doc |

I also like the Journey bags! I've never had any problem with my latches and never leaked a drop of water either. I've ridden in the rain several times also. The outdoorsman bags look nice but are too small for what I carry when I ride. I've got used to the looks of the Journeys and now just leave them on all the time. Last summer I was at a gas station pulling around to another pump when I turned the corner to sharply, I hit a cement pillar there to protect the gas pump with the side case and it damn near knocked my motorcycle down but all that happened to the side bag was a scuff. I couldn't believe it didn't shatter the bag. |

If you don't mind wet clothes the journey are fine. But to me thats like having a car with a trunk that leaks when it rains. Not very useful. |

Mine never leaked, but I did break two latches. |

No leaks and the latches are fine on my 09, but it's still fairly new. Regardless of what I've ever had for a saddlebag/carry bag, I've always put my stuff into a waterproof rafting style bag first (coated nylon ones, not the rubberized), and then into the luggage. Got my Ortlieb's yesterday and those are going onto the XT. They were used and I'm making a couple of mods & repairs to them to be a little more bike friendly. Like how they sit, both lower and narrower, and they give the bike a leaner/meaner look. Pix coming soon. Journey's are still for sale - I just don't like how they look on the Uly. Also don't like the big-assed panniers either, but that's just me. |

Court, exactly! The part on the right that does the heavy lifting of the camming device snaps off at the pivot point. Were that piece aluminum, it would be MUCH less likely to break. |

Yep, I have the old left side latch right here beside me and the break is practically identical to the picture you posted. Replaced it last weekend. The right side failed a few months back at about the same spot. I use my bike to commute back and forth to work every day. The bags are where I store my gear when I get there, so I open and close them quite a bit. |

I have the Outdoorsman cases and like them. The side cases are on the small side (easy lane splitting here in California) but the top case is BIG (two full face helmets). The added bonus is that the racks allow easy changing to other HB bags later on down the line. |

I need some "data points" if I can get those of you who have had problems to help. Please e-mail to THIS address and give me the following. Please use JOURNEYMAN LUGGAGE - Your Name as the subject.
- Dealer name
- Your name
- Address
- Phone
- Approximate purchase date of bags:
- Miles / months to failure:
- Did it fail as shown in the photo? Yes No
- If not, how did it fail?
- Any circumstances to failure (i.e. I was "levering" the bag closed" . "extreme cold") Please be honest, I need the data and you don't get the luggage police sent after you if you stood on them to close the bags
- Do your seals leak?
- Have they always leaked?
- Comments
Thanks, Court |

I have the Journey no problem so far, even i had at the lights a car hot me on the left case and it just bounced of the bike, it just coat a bit of road rash, nothing to serious. So were talking the latch mechanism on the journey is different form other Hepco&Becker cases? I just know that if u need to order a replace one and trough buell is way over priced you have to ask for the opposite bag, if you need the left one you have to order from Hepco&Becker the right one. |

Going, going, gone . . . . I've gotten four (4) very helpful and concise responses. It will be Wednesday before I get to work on this. Safe to assume that only four (4) folks have had latches break or bags leak? Seriously, thanks to those who have responded and if any more folks care to get it to me before COB on Wednesday. Thanks to all of you for your help . . . owners are a tremendous resource to Buell. Thank you, Court |

In 27,000 miles (and counting), I've never snapped a latch. After reading of people having problems with the early ones, I am careful NOT to try to use the latch to pull the case closed. That being said, my bags have leaked from day 1. It is easy to see why -- the leading edge pulls out from the seal, especially if they are filled up. Any rain is just pushed past the seal while riding. |

PM sent. I know that Carlos (ULYWIFE) had a latch failure or ten. I would also check with her on who might also have had a problem but hasn't seen this thread. |

I left fairly early on Sun but was here, there, and everywhere on Sat. I only saw one Uly the whole weekend....it was a red one kinda between the Buell demo rides and the speedway itself, right next to a shishkabob vendor (damn they smelled good). On the plus side, after the latch broke I stopped by the Buell trailer to say hi and see if there was any chance they had a spare one on the truck I could buy.......no luck on them having one, but before they even looked they said "if we have one you can have it, dont worry about the cost". They were all real nice and made me wish I hadn't parked over by the Harley demo rides, but rather over by them. |
