A chemistry professor in a large college had some exchange students in the class. One day while the class was in the lab the professor noticed one young man (exchange student) who kept rubbing his back, and stretching as if his back hurt.

The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country's government and install a new communist government.

In the midst of his story he looked at the professor and asked a strange question. He asked, 'Do you know how to catch wild pigs?'

The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The young man said this was no joke. 'You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come everyday to eat the free corn. When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming. When they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence. They get used to that and start to eat again. You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in the last side. The pigs, who are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat, you slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd.

Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon they go back to eating the free corn. They are so used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity.

The young man then told the professor that is exactly what he sees happening to America . The government keeps pushing us toward socialism and keeps spreading the free corn out in the form of programs such as supplemental income, tax credit for unearned income, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine, drugs, etc.. While we continually lose our freedoms -- just a little at a time.

One should always remember: There is no such thing as a free lunch! Also, a politician will never provide a service for you cheaper than you can do it yourself.

Keep your eyes on the newly elected politicians who are about to slam the gate on America.

"A government big enough to give you everything you want, is big enough to take away everything you have"

- Thomas Jefferson

Down here they catch wild pigs with a team of specially bred dogs and the hunter only uses a knife.

Pig sticking.

The pig dogs work as a team and take a limb or the testicles of a boar each - to immobilise it - then the hunter weighs in and slits its throat.

Don't think it has a political metaphor.

Dave, there is a ranch over in east Teaxas that captures wild boars live then grains feed them to soften them before slaughter. they use Rhodesian ridgebacks as tracker dogs and everybody goes out on 4 wheelers behind the dogs. Pretty similar to what you describe, except they take them back live. Don;t kill unless absoulutely needed for safety

Such a cynic for 22 year old.

Just because you don't approve, doesn't mean it isn't right.

Would you feel better if your parents lost their retirement savings over one illness.

How about being turned away at the hospital because you cannot afford to pay.

You lost your job and there was no public help available.

I can tell by your attitude you have never really been hungry. Wondering when your next meal is going to be. More than a little scary and probably one of the reasons I am fat today.

We hunt pigs here too...we try to take them alive when possible so we can grain feed them to get the wild taste out of the meat (caused by the tannic acid in the acorns they are fond of)...otherwise they are only fit for sausage.

For those not in the know...a wild boar or sow for that matter is a creature not to be taken lightly...I have seen many dogs badly cut up or killed by pigs...and if a pig attacks, you better kill it, or it can cut you to ribbons...a pack of wild hogs can kill and eat you.

All of God's creatures have a place...right next to the potatoes and gravy.

And my favorite...

If we weren't supposed to eat animals then why are they made of meat?

I used to help a friends step dad slaughter hogs in the winter. Coldest thing I believe I've ever done. People would have a lot more respect, or less apathy maybe, about their food if they knew how it was raised and prepared. Your chicken didn't come conveniently wrapped in cellophane on a styrofoam board.

But back on topic...I think many people, if they haven't already, will rethink the way they vote in four years.

Excellent post Mr. Forbes...I agree...it's way too easy to be led astray...people as a general rule are too trusting, especially when it comes to government.

On the other side...it is my strong belief that animals have rights...they have the right to be barbecued, roasted, toasted, boiled, broiled, and enjoyed...and in the case of feral swine...in some places such as Hawaii, you will get paid well to bring 'em in dead or alive...

Dave, not to quibble but if Kiwi hunters are dispatching boars with a throat slit they're either built like Atlas or you have mellow hogs. Here in the states a jab through the armpit into the thoracic cavity is the more common strategy when knife hunting. Stay clear of the tusks!

Personally, I'll cling to my rifle and enjoy the unfair advantage of being human. Less macho? Yes. Smarter? Absolutely.

A society is judged on how it treats its weakest and most helpless members.

I've heard that before and it's a noble sentiment but I can't remember any classes at school that covered how any civilization treated its weakest and most helpless members. Then again, I went to school at a time where there were jungles instead of rainforests and the next ice age was just around the corner.
Perhaps it is just something to make people feel guilty about their individual success.

The following is meant as a respectful reply to lost_in_ohio's post, not a jab at your beliefs.

Such a cynic for 22 year old.

Just because you don't approve, doesn't mean it isn't right.

I would argue that Socialism isn't right... not matter who approves or disaproves. For this country anyway. We are a Republic.

Would you feel better if your parents lost their retirement savings over one illness.

It sucks when that happens, certainly. But the role of the federal government is NOT to provide a living for anyone. If the state level wants to do that, well, let them have at it.
This type of assistance, in the old days, was provided by Churches, and the community. And it worked well, why can't it work now?

How about being turned away at the hospital because you cannot afford to pay.

This rarely happens. I know the politicians would love to convince you that it happens all over, but it doesn't. Hospitals are required to provide emergency patient care no matter their income level, or ability to pay at the time services are rendered.
Private hospitals do have the right to turn patients away who cannot pay... but after all, they are a private business, they should be able to make the choices that keep them in business.
If the hospital cannot collect on services, and the hospital has to close, that affects ALL of the patients of that hospital. The hospital needs to be able to make sound business decisions in order to stay viable.
The hospital's financial office is there to arrange payment options for those who do not have other means to pay.

You lost your job and there was no public help available.

That is what unemployment insurance is for. Also, refer back to my earlier statement about the role of the federal government.

I can tell by your attitude you have never really been hungry. Wondering when your next meal is going to be. More than a little scary and probably one of the reasons I am fat today.

I'm not so sure you could tell anything about the OP from a cut and paste.
I have been in that situation before... I still don't feel that the government should have been there to bail me out

A society is judged on how it treats its weakest and most helpless members.

The US is one of the most hated nations among the world, yet we treat our weakest and most helpless better than most. There are, of course, countries who provide more support for theirs, but that is the role they were set up for.
We are judged by other countries because of our actions towards other countries (or the perception thereof).
The weakest/most helpless in the US are far far far better off then some of the average in other countries.

thats why i pay for health insurance, its not my fault or my responsibility if others can not. My Irish friend says socialized health care sucks btw.

This countries govt wasnt originally set up to help out the lazy and feed the poor. Sadly thats the way it is heading.

Oh, im only 23 and i dont consider myself cynical, just smarter than a lot of the dolts that live here.
