What's going to happen with the factory warranty on a vehicle if the manufacturer shuts down? Long term parts availability? |

You're screwed. Just ask anyone who bought one of those Indians built in Gilroy, Ca. They turned out to be real clunkers too. Hard to get some parts, but there is always someone who can come up with most things you might need. |

I assuming you are referring to GM. They have a 3rd party company that will take over the warranty work in the event GM files for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Parts availability shouldn't be too much of a issue, there is currently plenty of parts to go around, and plenty of 3rd party parts (Carquest brand, etc) you can get in the event OEM parts aren't around anymore. In other words, buy a GM car already damn it! In other news Toyota is trying to get a bailout too. |

Ulynut, the difference between GM and Indian is about 9.3 million vehicles a year. GM is too large to completely vanish off the face of the planet. I am counting down the days till I get my new Pontiac |

How are folks feeling about purchasing new cars? I am seeing some KILLER deals . . . some of the best are buying cars off lease residuals. Guy in the Porsche Club had a roughly $40K residual, offered the dealer $28K and walked away with the car. My wife and I were both due in May. I'm keeping mine and we're evaluating what to do with hers. Seems like a good time to lay low. |

We were actually thinking about a new Dodge Ram 1500 with the lifetime powertrain warranty... They are killer prices, about 9k off locally and my main concern would be the validity of the warranty if they tank. If I'm going to be working on a truck, I'm gonna buy an old Ford used and just pay cash. (Message edited by Thumper74 on March 03, 2009) |

I would not worry about it. I would buy a GM car. If I could, that Pontiac Solstice looks fine. Even though they are going out of the business. |

It would be a collectible marque, like DeSoto, Studebaker, AMC, Oldsmobile, Plymouth etc. Gone but not forgotten. |

Hell they aren't entirely dead, from the sounds of the press release the name is going to live on, perhaps a "Pontiac" edition Camaro, with a different bumper and a screaming chicken decal on the hood.... |

Froggy, I do Vehicle Service Contract Claim adjudication and I've been a technician and Service Advisor at a multi-line dealer. I'm frustrated with domestics. Every version of the 2.8/3.1/3.4/3.5 they (gm) promise to fix the head gaskets and the intake gaskets. They just can't get it right. When the G6 came out... we had cars getting PDIs with leaky headgaskets. I can usually tell what's wrong with a domestic before the facility tells me. With imports, I can't. Most of them, with the exception of the VW 1.8T cars, aren't that predictable. Luckily, the G8 is a pre-existing platform like the GTO and uses proven components. I believe the trans and the rear diff are sourced from full size SUVs. If they can live there, they'll handle anything you can dishout short of reverse curls. |

They resolved the head gasket issue as far as I can tell around 2001. Hell my 02 Monte has the 3.4 and at 130k is still fine. G8 is on a new platform, Zeta, it has been around for only a few years, the new Camaro is on it too. Depending on what trim you pick on the G8, the components are coming from all over. The GXP has the engine and trans from the Corvette and the rear diff from the CTS-V. |

Nope, headgaskets and intake gaskets are ongoing... The G6 came out in 05 or 06 and they're still having issues. I'd understand if it were just the older engines being retrofitted with MLS gaskets, etc. But the newest generation is still having issues. Right... but the Zeta is a pre-existing platform from Autstralia. The engine is the LS3. A proven engine with the Vette. The 5spd/6spd auto is Corvette/full-size truck territory. The rear differential is proven in the Solstice/IFS Suvs/CTS cars. It's a parts bin car, but that's alright because you're getting parts from $50,000+ cars. I personally like the GTO when it was out and if it weren't for the insurance at the time, I'd own one. I love the Solstice in orange with a black top, but really need more than 2 seats. I had REALLY hoped that they'd bring us the GXP coupe with 4 seats, but it looks like it's still a 2 seater. The G8 is currently more car than I think I need. My SVT Focus gets reasonable gas mileage and while it isn't fast, it handles great. I'd rather drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow. Next 'car' will be an old, used Cherokee |

How about driving a fast car fast? I hear that's more fun than either of your other choices. While my '08 Mustang GT has been a royal pain in the arse with warranty work, it HAS been quite a hoot, especially on some of the long straights out on I-75. I can't wait to actually put a tune and a 3.73 rear end in it! I was seriously eyeballin' a Solstice before I settled on the Mustang. If it had even had half a trunk, I'd probably be in one right now. The thing had less storage capacity than some motorcycles. ~SM (Message edited by Swordsman on March 04, 2009) |
