Here we go.... as posted elsewhere, i recently bought an 02 M2, Volcano Gray with orange frame. i found it on craigslist in the SF area. i contacted the guy who was listing it for 1000.00 or best offer. he took his time returning my emails and eventually relisted the bike for 2000.00 OBO. ticked me off!!! so i ignored it for awhile. in the mean time, i looked at a 96 S1 in the same area, he was asking 1600.00 OBO, i offered him 1000.00 contingent on my inspection. he said ok, i travelled the 3 hours to look at it and it was trashed!!! i offered 800.00 and he balked, no deal! i came home and emailed the guy with the M2, and he hadn't sold it yet, so i re-offered 1000.00... he asked if i was available saturday, as that was his last day at the house he was moving from, and it needed to go! i went and looked at it saturday with cash, and left with it!!! the bad; driveway drop that had broken the left side signals, bent the shifter, and broke the clutch lever. the battery was beyond dead!! numerous oil seepages. one small tear in the rear of the seat. (i just sold a near perfect seat a week ago!) the inlet to the muffler is broken and needs to be re-welded, he had a regular hose clamp (broken) trying to hold the pipe onto the muffler, the front bracket that supports the collector to the hanger is missing. front tire is shot. the good; bodywork is in real good condition, no scrapes, just a couple minor scratches. very dirty though, been sitting garaged for a year. here's the best part...factory race pipe/muffler/air cleaner and module! still has original foot pegs. the gas tank was nearly full of old gas. the carb hadn't been touched, the cover on the bottom is still there!! i stopped in at santa rosa HD to get a battery. (126.00!!) i planned on washing her today, but it has been raining like crazy. i couldn't help myself, so i took the old battery out and slapped in the new one so i could get the actual mileage. (33,777) and couldn't resist trying to start it. i filled the oil tank (practically dry!) and hit the starter....VROOM!! started after a couple tries...the carb was dry of course. this thing is loud!!! (in the garage, with the door open) just let it run long enough to make sure there aren't any major engine noises that shouldn't be there...sounds ok so far. observations; the seat is bolted on,there is a nut welded on the bottom where the threaded insert is supposed to be. the carb has a long piece of tubing coming from it, i guess the hose that was connected to the carbon canister originally, will need a vac plug. the push rod tubes are black! the top end is all black, not sure if someone spraypainted it or what??? there is no overspray...who knows, i've never seen black push rod tubes stock. so, i plan on cleaning her up when the weather clears up. changing ALL the fluids, replacing the spark plugs (have), re-jetting (need), replacing the bent shift lever (have one), replacing the broken signals (have them), getting the muffler welded (locally), adding the correct exh bracket (need), adding the correct muffler clamp (need), replacing the broken clutch lever (need), replacing the seat (need), replacing the front tire (have), removing the warning stickers (all orig), replacing the license/signal mount (need), and general wash and wax. i also need to get the service manual so i have the fork service procedures. any thing i am missing? i don't have many pics yet, i will document more as i go, here is the pic from when i picked it up; (Message edited by sleez on March 03, 2009) |

Glad you got it - I saw is when first ad went in Clist and was almost tempted to follow up on it. Then saw it for 2G and backed off. Got my RS on local Craigs list with no responses at all - of course I want a LOT more than a thousand bucks for mine! Prolly too much for the market to bear. AL |

Sleez, that is a great deal and a beautiful bike. I wish I was closer so I could see it. Please post pics of your progress. I would love to find a M2 that color combo. I would recommend rebuilding the carb and check your wheel bearings. Also check the isolators. Sounds like you got everything under control. I envy you... Frank |

My '02 S3T has the same color combination on the engine right down to the black push rod tubes. Looks like it will make a real nice bike with only a little work. Very cool! Loren |

My 02 X1 had the exact same engine colors as well.. I think it was an '02 thing. Great find! It's good to know that the new owner will give her the attention she deserves. |

Nice work, Lee. Be sure that all that missing oil was not in crankcase and when it warms up you don't have an oil geyser. |

Nice looking catch. Does it have an aftermarket fork brace? Hey, be sure to drain out all the old gas especially if it smells bad. Bad gas, I'm sure you know, decomposes into stuff that resembles sticky varnish that gets sucked down the intake valve stems & guides and can cause valves to stick and bend pushrods. I learned this the hard way trying to revive my dad's '65 Dodge Dart /6. |

Maybe I missed it so please forgive me. Did you only pay $1000 for it? If so, great job! |

Unbelievable find!! One of the best color combos out there for the tubers!! Best part is that by the time you get all the stuff replaced that needs to be replaced, you still won't have much tied up into it. Good job! |

Very nice. But I gotta say you should consider yourself lucky buying it without knowing if the engine was OK. Your $1000 gamble(!) paid off big time and I would have also fired it up as soon as I could just to know that the motor was alive... Good luck with it. |

Sparky; it has a frame brace/ fender mount, but i'm not familiar enough with the M2 to know if it's aftermarket or stock? Usmoto; yes, 1000.00 US Dollars!!! Kalali; yeah, i figured, even if it needed a rebuild, it would only cost like 1200.00 or so, and i would only have like 2500.00 into it, and it would be worth more than 4000.00! still a good gamble. ok, it seems the black push rod tubes are stock, thanks guys. once it clears up a bit, i will do a walk around picture fest of all the parts. |

That there is a PURDY bike that you got a SMOKING deal on. Congratulations. Same color & year as my 1st Buell, an M2L, so I may be a little bit biased. |
