I have found a supplier for Red Line Oil here in UK. I know it is held in high esteem in the USA, so what oil should I use in my engine and gearbox? I'm thinking RED LINE High Performance Synthetic Motor Oil 20w-50 in the engine and RED LINE Synthetic Gear Oil 75W-90NS GL5 (non Limited Slip).

Naturally, I'll stick with the recommended oil for the primary drive.

Comments, opinions and experience appreciated please.

I think they make a specific 20W-50 motorcycle oil, but either is probably OK.

The Buell and Sportster primary and gearbox share the same oil, unlike the big Harley engines. IMHO stick with the recommended lube there.

I would also recommend using the Formula+ in the transmission and primary. Not expensive and is a special fluid for the new gear boxes since 2006.

Here in UK, the smart advice is to use dino oil, but surely synthetic would be better once the motor is run in with about 10k miles on it?

Synthetic has a lot going for it, not least more efficient heat transfer away from the motor, which, IMHO is needed for the Buell motor.

Mike- I definitely agree with synth being a good choice for the Uly engine.

I've seen people change to synthetic as early as 500 miles, but I tend to agree with your idea. I switched at ~5500 miles and my engine continued to "loosen up" after that. I don't by any mean think that waiting until 7500 or 10k miles to switch to synthetic would be a bad thing.

Just whatever you do, don't put the gear oil in the primary, it has been linked to stator failures, but i believe you knew that.

I switched to RedLine at 1K. Greatly improved shifting. Burned virtually *zero* oil at 10K. I recommend it for both.

Redline is what I use in my Uly. I run the 20w-50.

I don't use anything but Formula+ in the transmission though. Although Redline is motorcycle clutch safe, I don't want to risk it.

I went from screaming eagle synthetic oil to Spectro mineral, after having the syn drinked like water, with the spectro there in so oil burning, and it think is good and reasonable priced.
