Just bought an 04 Buellxb12. It has the Buell performance exhaust (and probably the ecm and air filter). I started it and was showing a friend how great it sounds. after letting it warm up for about 30 secs i gave the throttle a couple revs and it sputtered and almost stalled, then i tried again and it reved a little and backfired..? i've never owned a low revving twin engine before but this seems strange. Is there something that would cause the engine to NOT rev properly? |

First guess is fouled plugs, esp if the engine was not warm/hot when you started it. Something these bikes do when cold, given the way the 'enrichment circuit' works. |

I would make sure it (The Bike) is for sure warmed up before passing judgment. I can start mine up and have to let it warm up. Once warmed up it runs like a PRO. |

Warm, my XB12 won't pickup revs promptly & cleanly from idle if I suddenly open throttle. Certainly not like an in-line four. Cold engine (ridden < 3 minutes), I'd expect what Mbigelow reports. My bike's idle is at 800 - 900 rpm now. |

You really have to let it warm up 3-5 minutes to get any reasonable throttle response. My 2000 is less picky than the 2001 because (I think) the 2001 was rejetted for the SS2-R exhaust. |

Correct idle speed (once warmed) is 1150 rpms, I believe. 800 to 900 is too low. |

I always thought 1050 was the right number. May be it varies from bike to bike. I am thinking of Tubers. |

Mine needs warming before I touch the throtle or it fouls the plugs-Lightning 1200 08 Model UK Spec. Fine if warmed up. |

Sounding like the nature of the beast. I usually try to give it a few minutes to warm up. I've hoped on mine before while cold and that exact same thing has happened. |

Without riding it it just sounds cold to me, V-twins (even fuel injected ones) need a good warm up prior to riding... or at least riding without jerking/backfiring etc...But I'm with Akbuell, I had an Ironhead sporty that gas fouled plugs faster than a '65 olds, had to increase the heat range on my plugs, just on idea if properly warming the engine doesn't give you the proper results.
