OK, I've installed CR mirrors on my Uly. Changed the rears over to LED as well. Have the high-beam mod for 2 lights on. Run heated jacket and gloves. Garmin GPS. Voltmeter shows 14v just about all the time, but I'm thinking about adding aux lights to fill the spots where the front signals used to be. Anyone have any guesses if 55w driving lights would be too much for the system? I know the following: 1. Heated jacket/gloves plus 35w driving lights are too much for my S2 2. The S2 is OK with either the heat, *or* the lights, but not both 3. The S2 has a vastly different charging system and capacity. Just wanna make sure the Uly will be OK with the new lights before I order a set. Budgeting and all... |

Joe, I would highly recommend the Signal Dynamic indicator (search for the Ft B thread on install). I am adding heated gear and the Piaa 510s but I will be able to switch off items when the indicator tells me I am not getting the proper charge. (I am adding that indicator to my S2T as well). The Uly has a much more robust system that the S2. You are going to do it anyway so let us know how it goes. |

You could add a blender, a microwave oven, and a TV and still be good. The problem isn't too much draw on the system. It's too little. They had to downgrade the charging system in the 08+ model because the 06/07's were generating too much power and having to short it to ground. You should be fine. |

Right now I'm running an Autocom, Garmin Zumo, twin always-on HIDs in the headlights, dual FIAMM Freeway Blaster horns, and PIAA 510s, and I don't have any problems. I guess I'm just an electrical idiot, and never really gave it much thought. It's good to know the Uly has a robust system though, because soon I want to add additional tail lights and some lights on the hand guard, and next winter I will probably add some heated gear. |

Rat, I got two 55W Aux lights, two 50W HID, Buell heated grips, Zumo 550 with XM thing, Veypor VR2 race computer, Gerbing heated jacket and gloves, Motocomm video camera and recorder, and now a Chatterbox on the way. I think you will be fine Oh yea I even had an electric 6 pack cooler on my old Uly |

My system shows 13.8 to 14.4 while running dual 50W hids, heated grips and vest, GPS and dual FIAMMs. Adding an Autocom in a week or so. Voltage does drop to 12.6 - 13.3 idling at a light but quickly goes back up once moving. Go for it. |

Well, that's good reassurance, thanks! Frank - um, yeah....I'm probably gonna do it anyway lol. At this point, I see the bike having heated grips (WHY doesn't anyone put heat elements on the damned palms of heated gloves anymore!?!?!?!) and the aux lights before I'm done. I may add some tail/brake lights, but plan on using LEDs so they're low-draw. And I do have the Kuryakn voltmeter on the Uly (and the S2) - according to the old Fluke in the toolbox, they're actually pretty accurate. At idle on the Uly, with the heated jacket on "medium" (which is the thermostat switching it on and off), I can see the meter dropping from 14 to 12 and back up as the jacket cycles. That's at idle. I think I'll be wiring the aux lights to high-beam-switched, so they won't be drawing at idle anyway (I make it a habit to use low beams when I approach stop signs). I've got some neat ideas, too...I'll keep the board posted |
