I find myself getting left in the dust when I ride w/ my friends. I'm not losing them until top speed then they pull away. So I want to gear up with a euro pulley or maybe a 1990 sportster pulley??? Anybody gear the Buell for the highway? How and how much??? THANKS |

hey, be careful on this subject. you might get reamed if you ask or say the word....dare i say it again..... sportbikes. there i said it....what. lol i have been in touch with a guy from the uk website and the stock euro gearing is a 29 front and a 55 rear. he converted to the american gearing 27/61 and he said it made a hell of a difference. so what i recommend to you is the same thing i am doing. get the full euro setup 29/55 and play with the combinations. if one works great if not. then you can easily put it back. here is the link to my grenade toss http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/406 2/433816.html?1234123218 |

Ahh! Come-on Hippyjoe. You put me out there! LOL But I will admit the badge comes in handyThanks Loveabuell, I was thinking about the Euro ratio. I was going to just buy a larger front pulley to try out. I'm want to avoid having to buy a new belt. Also whats a good way too correct my speedo? |

Boy I'm glad I posted hear Loveabueller! You were fighting an up hill battle with some of those guys. I guess they got off on being responsible Buellers. You would think you were on a BMW forum |

But I will admit the badge comes in handy I know what you mean... sometimes I wish I got into that profession myself... or at least had a riding buddy in that field. Sorry I don't know the answer to your question. I don't know why that other thread exploded. There have been several discussions here over the years about swapping pulleys or adding an overdrive trans to lower the rpm's at cruising speed. I think you can swap out one of the pulleys and keep the stock belt, but I'm not sure. A larger front will give you a higher top speed, as will a smaller rear. As I recall from a big twin, a 1-tooth change in the front is about equivalent to a 2-3 tooth change in the rear, as far as overall gear ratio. So theoretically speaking, if you could find a slightly smaller larger front cog, and a slightly larger smaller rear one, you could keep your stock belt and significantly lower your rpm's at cruising speed. I think the Euro-spec pulleys may do that, again I really don't know. But I know that information is buried on this site someplace. I am pretty sure the Euro gearing gives a taller final ratio, to accommodate the autobahn, autostrada, etc. Also the euro-spec M2 came with a higher rpm-range in the cams over the US version, which bears out the theory that it is pulling a slightly taller gear. If Buell did it, so can you, lol (Message edited by hippyjoe on February 18, 2009) |

Also if you can't find Euro or Sporty cogs, which would probably be the cheapest route... maybe even involving a direct trade... you could install a chain drive kit for around 300 bucks, and select the final drive ratio. Chains are noisier, not as smooth and require more maintenance, but they are easier to replace in the event of failure... and "may" put less strain on the mainshaft, for sure they do on 4-speeds, but that is a different trans entirely. |

Brinnutz, what state are you looking to be hired in? Hippyjoe, If I can't find a cheap pulley I will go with the chain kit. I was just looking at my belt adjuster, it looks like I don't have too much left. So a smaller rear pulley is out. A 29 or 30 on the front sounds good. I just don't understand what the complaint is with gearing up a Buell.(refer. other thread from Loveabueller) The M2 is a torque monster!!! Holding a gear a little long would be better I would think??? |

FIXED! Nice catch, I gotta lay off that damn crack pipe. Hugh--I think a lot of the people blowing smoke about taller gearing are doing just that. We all have different riding styles. Just my .01. |

That makes sense... as if the belt "stretched" over time... (or maybe the isolators compressed?)... so going bigger on the front may help with that. Don't forget to adjust it "way" loose, i.a.w. the general consensus on the board that a loose belt can double the service life to ~30k. Me personally, I'd keep the belt over a chain. I like the smoothness, the quiet, and not slinging grease or having to worry about rust. I'd just run it loose and change it out around 30k to be safe. Good luck with the pulley search, I'd be interested to hear what you figured out. |

Now that I think about it, I can see why Brits would want lower gearing than the Euro-spec bikes they end up with... they don't have the Autobahns etc. found on the mainland. There is a Brit Buell site, I bet you could find someone to swap straight across on a set of pulleys... http://www.ukbeg.com/modules.php?name=Forums Lovedabueller was right all along, if I would've read his post I could have saved myself a lot of typing, lol |

YOU CAN CHANGE THE OVERALL RATIO OF THE FINAL DRIVE BY 17% IF YOU RUN A 29/55 AND IF WHAT I HEARD IS CORRECT AT 80MPH NOW IM AT 3900/4000 AND WITH THE EURO I WOULD BE AT 3250/3200. SO YOU CAN HAVE DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS OF THE TWO. THE BACK IS LIKE 9.8 % SMALLER AND THE FRONT IS LIKE 7.1 % BIGGER. SO THATS WHAT I CAME UP WITH. HOPE THIS HELPS. AND BY THE WAY IF YOU CHANGE THE REAR ONLY YOU WOULD FEEL THE TORQUE MORE THAN CHANGING THE FRONT. AND NOMATTER THE COMBO IVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE STOCK BELT WORKS. WHEN I GET MINE ILL LET YOU ALL KNOW. IM NOT YELLING I JUST SEEN THE CAPS WAS ON. LOL KEITH |

Just my .01. psh, we all know it was a bong! j/k LOL. i personally wouldn't mind dropping my gearing to drop the top speed from 140 to 130... i think that would be a SWEET compramise to gain some acceleration. |

Thanks Guys for all your comments!!! I'm going to order up a front (30) pulley and see how it feels. I'm a little concerned about extra stress on the output shaft but I haven't heard anything bad so I'll give it a shot. Brinnutz, take any and all law enforcement tests including Corrections, Sheriffs, Game Warden, State Parole, Ranger, ect... Also I'm not going to blow smoke up your A$$....If your not a VET the only way to get hired is an Alternate route program if offered and a lot of political connections. Start kissing ass on the winning political party bosses (regardless of your personal view) and be the best working Rep. or Dem. they ever seen. Make sure they all know your name and face. GOOD LUCK!!! |

Official thread jack in progress... Wilson, I think we have a hire lined up to start applications/testing in March for corrections, pm me if you'd like me to get you some details. Not sure of our starting wage but I can find out. No political connections required. We're a long way from where you're at though... OH! To stay on topic, I've been thinking of dropping the front pully a tooth for better acceleration. Most of my riding is commuting, and I couldn't get the bike up past 120 or so on the track anyway. -Mike (Message edited by littlebuggles on February 19, 2009) |

That's good Brinnutz, now make sure you take a civil service test!!! VETs go to the top of the list. Check the blue pages in the phone book for Civil Service Employment. Remember...POLITICs is everything in a small town! They don't care what your score or statues is!!! Mike, I'll run around in a lower gear for the hills and I also take a 150 mile ride to my dads farm in Pa. When I'm running 85+ for an hour I feel like I'm pushing my Buell too hard. So I would like to see the RPMs down about 500 or so |

I found some 29 tooth hard anodized aluminum front pulleys for sale. 110-120 bucks for the kit and free shipping. For 91 and up Sporty-Buell. Does the price and part sound OK??? |

There's an rpm chart around this forum somewhere that shows the change of a 29 tooth but I can't find it. I have a used but nice, aluminum 29 tooth front pulley only. Raw aluminum color, has a steel insert for the splines. Asking $60 plus shipping. PM me if you want a picture, or any question. I didn't put it on because I got the Baker6 instead. |

Little, they are not colored. But 1 looks darker and the other lighter. When the cover is put on you cannot see them anyway. |

Would you pm me or post you source? That is a good price. I'm running a cover on my stock part since the face is all rusted but I think a hard anodized pulley would be slick! |

Oh I did some quick cypherin and the 29 tooth on the front would move the mph from 55-59 and just the 55 tooth on the rear would move the mph from 55-61. No guarantee's though. |
