Does anyone know the difference between UNF AND NF TAP?...I would need to know it, because the primary drain plug stripped threads and I want try to chase the threads with a 1/2 20 tap. I have got both in my hands (1/2 20 NF from USA and 1/2 20 UNF from UK) and I realized that the UNF is a little larger in size. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. |

Quite sure the proper TAP would be a USA NF ... Find a TOOL SUPPLY which will sell TAPS and DIES ... Take your drain plug to them and they will match you up to the proper TAP ... |

They are completely interchangeable but some differences exist. The principal difference is the depth of the thread and the shape of the root and crest. The U.S. NF threads use a flat crest and roots, the U.K's are rounded which is why the UNF tap measures a little larger in order to be able to accept the flat crested NF bolt threads. |
