Don't do it !!!! At best, it will burn the sock inside the muffler and little pieces of flaming sock will spit out of the exhaust pipe, and you will ride away with a muffler that is still too loud. Maybe it wont run at all. Maybe it will restrict the exhaust enough that it will run, but blow out the exhaust gaskets. Maybe you will burn down the house, cause a major forest fire, or burn yourself.
Myself, I would sell the drummer, and install something quieter, like the stock exhaust, if it was too loud for me or my neighbors.
Removing and installing the muffler really isn't that hard if you use the service manual and take your time with it. You might even enjoy working on your own bike.
There was a post on here somewhere that a guy had picked up some of those cheap drag pipe baffle s for a sportster and fitted it into the dump pipe. It looked like a nice way to do it and cost effective. If I can find it again I will post it here,
If you are good at fabricating stuff?, You could mount a washer just inside the exit pipe on the muffler. Put it in like the plate inside a carburetor on a shaft with linkage. Hook it up to a solenoid and button on the bars or a cable and lever on the bars. Run it wide open on the open road, and close it up some for a quiet ride with more torque in the hood.
If your bike is Barricade Orange stick a banana in there leave part of it sticking out not only would it look cool at first but after a while you would have a big flaming dong hanging out.
I had a re-packable Hooker header on my first bike, a '73 Honda XL250. I started a forrest fire with that thing. We used stainless steel-wool to pack it. Fiberglass would burn out in a couple hours of ride time.
One hot summer day riding muddy creek bottoms and hill climbs in NW Pa in 1975, we stopped for a break just after a hard muddy, rutted crossing. The engine and pipe were packed solid with stinky gooey mud. When I fired it up to leave we went right into a hill climb. I rounded the top and looked back to see my buddy right behind me, and noticed smoke from the dried leaves on the way up. We rushed and slid on our butts back down the steep slope quashing the fires with the dirt we were breaking loose and pushing down in front of us. I was so glad we noticed it right away.
Your choice of muffler packing can be very important. I too, am sure sox would not cut it!

First you put in some lighter fluid then the potato. Just make sure you let someone else start it up while you run away.
Make a tunable baffle by purchasing a 1/4"x1" thumb screw or taking a 3/4" outside diameter washer and weld it to the top of a 3/4" x 1/4" bolt. Now Drill a 1/4" hole about 1" from the end of the drag pipes. Take the tunable baffle and place a 1/4" nut and a lock washer (away from the large washer) the on it. Now insert your tunable baffle into the exhaust pipe like the example below.
You can tune the baffle by changing the angle of the thumbscrew or washer to the exhaust pipe. For maximum torque, the washer will be at 90 degree angle to the pipe. For maximum horsepower the washer will be parallel to the pipe.
